Olga Kurylenko Boards Benoit Philippon’s ‘Lota’

Olga Kurylenko Boards Benoit Philippon’s ‘Lota’
Paris– Olga Kurylenko (“To The Wonder”), Gregory Fitoussi (“World War Z”) and Emir Kusturica (“7 Days in Havana”) are set to topline “Lota,” a French Guiana-set dramedy directed by Benoit Philippon (“Lullaby”).

Described by Philippon as a variation on the themes of Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita,” pic will star Kurylenko as a young woman who was abused during her childhood and struggles to build healthy relationships with men.

“As in ‘Magnolia,’ ‘Lota’ follows various characters whose lives intersect,” said Philippon, who also cited “Mud” as a source of inspiration for “Lota”‘s dream-like atmosphere, visual style and the main character’s soul searching.

“Kurylenko’s character is both a princess and a warrior and it’s that ambivalence that makes her so fascinating,” explained Philippon, adding that he’s interested in strong female characters such as the ones portrayed in movies by Quentin Tarantino, John Cassavetes and Tennessee Williams.

Cast is completed by Jean-Pierre Martins,

Zombies vs Me – The Movie Marathon of the Dead

  • HeyUGuys
Halloween is becoming one of my favourite times of the year as I get to put myself through some extreme movie watching experiences as well as seeing some of the best/worst horror films and characters ever created.

Last Halloween I watched all the films featuring the horror legends of Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, I recorded their kill counts as well as doing a face off competition to decide who was the ultimate movie villain of the three legends with Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th Movies being the overall winner. You can see my blood-soaked venture here.

This year I went for a test of endurance, my plan was to watch as many Zombie movies consecutively until sleep deprivation turned me into something closely resembling a Zombie. I had 20 films lined up for the experiment and managed to get through 10 films over approximately 19 hours from

This week's new films

Winter's Bone (15)

(Debra Granik, 2010, Us) Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan. 100 mins

What No Country For Old Men did for west Texas, this striking landscape thriller does for Missouri's Ozark mountains. This is no country for poor women: an insular rural community clouded by drugs and patriarchy where they do things their way. So when Ree learns her father's skipped bail, and the family home was his security, she must ask difficult questions in dangerous places – chiefly among her extended outlaw family. Tough suspense, documentary-like observation and character drama are perfectly balanced.

I'm Still Here (15)

(Casey Affleck, 2010, Us) Joaquin Phoenix, Sean Combs, Anthony Langdon. 107 mins

What was Joaquin thinking? This film won't clear that up, but it at least shows you what he was doing: taking drugs, falling out with friends and the movie biz, rapping badly and descending into mumbling incoherence – apparently.

The Other Guys (12A)

(Adam McKay, 2010, Us) Will Ferrell,

La Horde (The Horde) (2009)

  • Planet Fury
Directed by: Yannick Dahan, Benjamin Rocher

Written by: Arnaud Bordas, Yannick Dahan, Stéphane Moïssakis, Nicolas Peufaillit, Benjamin Rocher

Cast: Claude Perron, Jean-Pierre Martins, Eriq Ebouaney, Aurélien Recoing, Doudou Masta, Antoine Oppenheim, Jo Prestia, Yves Pignot, Adam Pengsawang, Sébastien Peres, Laurent Demianoff, Stéphane Orsolani

It's an unwritten rule in zombie film making that the beginning of the film is just a day in the life. Films which follow this pattern begin with people going about their various petty affairs, going to work, getting groceries, scratching themselves, and all the other common activities that make up humdrum existence. It's refreshing, then, that a film has finally been made which captures a scenario wherein the zombie apocalypse crashes down upon a completely unrelated drama.

A group of local police have become incensed by the death of one of their comrades. One of their own was cut down by a group of hardened criminals

Kruger and Sagnier Show their 'Bare Feet' to Fabienne Berthaud

  • Internationally renowned regular art-house actresses Diane KrugerDiane Kruger
[/link] (upcoming Inglourious Basterds) and Ludivine Sagnier (A Girl Cut in Two) are being paired together to portray sisters with very different life expectations and experiences in Pieds Nus sur les Limaces (“Bare Feet on Slugs”). Fabienne Berthaud's sophomore feature begins lensing on August 17 until end of September. According to Cineuropa, Brigitte Catillon and Jean-Pierre Martins also fill out the cast and the pic will be produced by Le Bureau's Bertrand Faivre. We recently witnessed how Euro fair that specifically address this family dynamic could be all encompassing and yet simple, strength of sister-dramas with I've Love You So Long, but this reminds me of one of the characters that as featured in Duane Hopkins' Better Things – where the notion of protecting one's self from the outside world is explored. Co-written by Berthaud and Pascal Arnold, this is based on Berthaud’s eponymous novel,

Lewis-Martin Soucy's The Beast (La bête) now in pre-production

Based on the screenplay by Soucy and Jeff O'Brien, the movie is set to star Jean-Pierre Martins, Marc Andréoni, Khalid Maadour, Mouss Diouf, and Jean-Christophe Bouvet. Is it just me, or does it smell of Splinter?

"At the dawn of the summer, four young surfers in a jeep and a family in their camping caravan take the same road to Morocco. They both happen to stop for a break on the way at a resting place isolated in the heart of the desert. Rapidly night falls, the vehicles won't start, and a strange, invisible creature terrorizes and attacks them savagely, using a dangerous escaped psychopath to get to them. With the help of a mysterious Berber, only the strongest of them will survive this nightmare..."

Early Storyboard Art For 'The Horde'

Production is set to begin on Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher's The Horde, a French film that follows an end of the world battle between gangsters, cops and zombies. We've been keeping a very close eye on this film as it's being executive produced by Xavier Gens (Frontier(s), Hitman), besides sounding very awesome. This morning I was provided with a storyboard from the film that stars Eriq Ebouaney, Jean-Pierre Martins, Aurélien Recoing, Claude Perron and Alain Fig. North of Paris. In order to avenge the murder of one of their own by a group of ruthless gangsters, corrupt cops four go on a rampage in a condemned building serving as the mobster's hideout. Now trapped, the officers are about to be executed when the unimaginable occurs: hordes of bloodthirsty, cannibalistic creatures invade the building, savagely attacking everyone. Unexpected alliances are made when their lives are threatened by the unthinkable.

The official synopsis from the film’s international seller Films Distribution is as follows:
