Why the Oscar-Winning Producer of ‘Big Hero 6’ Made Big-Screen Nature Documentary ‘Born In China’

21 April 2017 12:32 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After winning the Oscar for 2014’s “Big Hero 6,” producer Roy Conli was lured to what seems to be a far-flung project: a Disneynature doc, “Born in China,” which explores the life cycles of wild pandas and other native Chinese wildlife. However, he said that it was less about the animals and more about their collective capacity to communicate complex emotions and ideas.

“I’ve always loved the structure of multiple stories,” said Conli, a longtime Disney Animation executive who famously mounted the premiere of “Angels in America” at the Mark Taper Forum in 1992. “There are multiple characters that you need to fall in love with, and they will add up to one story. That was the same with this. You had five species, but you concentrated on three animal families.”

Other Disneynature movies have had more singular topics (“Bears,” “Monkey Kingdom”), but director Lu Chuan’s “Born in China »

Time After Time Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Secrets Stolen

19 March 2017 8:17 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

There are some really good plot developments as well as some seriously problematic elements in Time After Time Season 1 Episode 4

After Time After Time Season 1 Episode 3 that focused almost completely on fleshing out most of the the relationships, this offering reveals some excellent backstory to explain how so many people knew the time travelers were coming.

Thankfully, less time is spent on the labored romantic relationship between Wells and Jane although we still have to put up with a little sugary morning nonsense.

In my day, passion and desire...they were the true result of yearning for a woman, the longing that fills your head and clouds every thought as you patiently wait for her to walk through the door and say 'Good Morning'

Time After Time Series Premiere: Time is No Barrier When Chasing a Killer

6 March 2017 6:33 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Series premieres are incredibly tricky balancing acts between good world-building and engaging action.

On Time After Time Season 1 Episode 1 and Time After Time Season 1 Episode 2, we are thrown immediately into the world of Victorian England with its dark and dangerous alleyways alongside genteel

This is perfectly illustrated by the opening scene, depicting one of Jack the Ripper's brutal murders, followed by drinks at the home of H.G. Wells where the killer strolls in, totally accepted as just one of the guys.

The show's central characters – H.G. Wells as portrayed by Freddie Stroma and Josh Bowman's Dr. John Stevenson aka "Jack the Ripper" – are perfectly displayed in contrast to each other when H.G. reveals his time machine.

While the rest of his guests tease him about having too much time on his hands, Stevenson immediately jumps into the seat and wants to take it for a spin.

TV Review: ‘Time After Time’

3 March 2017 11:00 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Time After Time” piggybacks on a microtrend of time-travel shows to mash together a few different genres into one unwieldy premise: notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper on the loose in modern-day Manhattan, with science-fiction pioneer H.G. Wells chasing him through time. The show is a televised, modern update of the 1979 film of the same name. But unlike that film, which enjoys the odd and speculative mechanics of time travel — or other time travel shows, which use the premise to go to various points in time — “Time After Time” doesn’t seem all that interested in how the machine works or in stretching it to its limits. Wells pursues the Ripper to modern-day New York from Victorian London, and then the show decides to just camp out, going so far as to disable the time machine by the end of the second hour.

‘Time After Time’ Review: A Super-Hot Jack the Ripper Evokes Peculiar Questions in Sporadically Fun Time Travel Drama

3 March 2017 9:14 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Should Jack the Ripper be super-hot?

The legendary serial killer has proven a fascinating historical figure for over a century, but that’s largely due to the way his crimes remain shadowed in anonymity, not because of his well-defined torso. And yet as depicted by Josh Bowman in the new series “Time After Time,” Jack the Ripper’s handsomeness and charm overshadow his murderous tendencies. He even addresses said hotness directly during the first episode, saying to his one-time friend H.G. Wells, “I know, I look absolutely dashing.”

That’s right: He’s sexy and he knows it.

It’s weird to see such unambiguous objectification of a serial killer on screen. In fact, this might be the weirdest aspect of the time travel drama, premiering this Sunday on ABC. A reimagining, if you will, of the 1979 film written and directed by Nicholas Meyer, “Time After Time’s” first two episodes serve largely as set-up. »

Time After Time may belong to the 2016-17 TV season’s time-travel class, but it has more in common with executive producer Kevin Williamson’s previous series, The Vampire Diaries and The Following, than it does with Timeless and Making History.

Time After Time Season 1 Review

2 March 2017 5:34 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

I’m not totally against ridiculous TV show premises. Last year, Timeless proved that a non-original idea can merge with enthusiastic storytelling to form a fun, if formulaic, romp. Westworld, lest we all forget, is essentially an origin story about killer robot cowboys and cowgirls. I dug both of those shows, but they also share one downfall in my book: their initially intriguing opening hours faced diminishing returns in the “why do I care anymore” department. They lacked longevity.

Time After Time is as ridiculous as they come, in both good ways and bad, but it already feels like it’s encroaching into the land of viewer apathy by the time the totally toothless pilot-ending cliffhanger lands with a thud. Scream and The Following creator Kevin Williamson adapts the story from a book and film of the same name – in which the real »

ABC's Time After Time: How Hard Is It Being TV's Sixth Time Travel Show?

The producers of Time After Time are Wells aware that when the ABC drama makes its debut, it will be (conservatively speaking) TV’s sixth current series with a time travel element.

That, however, makes things a bit easier, says executive producer Kevin Williamson (The Following), seeing as viewers are just a bit more likely to be familiar with “time ripples,” the Butterfly Effect and such.
