Mark Kermode's DVD round-up – review

Magic Mike; Ted; Brave; Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

After what seemed like a lifetime leaning "quirkily" against people and inanimate objects in the posters for dismal, money-spinning rom-coms, Matthew McConaughey rediscovered his mojo this year with two movies that reminded us why we first sat up and took notice of him in Dazed and Confused, Lone Star and even Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. In William Friedkin's Killer Joe, he built upon the career resurrection hinted at in The Lincoln Lawyer, playing a slimy, murderous Texan working both sides of the law.

He dazzles once again in Magic Mike (2012, Lionsgate, 15) as the leader of a male striptease troupe whose routines boast none of the coy amateurism of The Full Monty. Inspired in part by the real-life experiences of beefcakey co-star and producer Channing Tatum, this Steven Soderbergh-directed romp continues the director's ongoing love affair with upmarket exploitation cinema. »

Poster For A Dark Truth, Starring Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria And Forest Whitaker

25 September 2012 3:49 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Here’s the new poster for Damian Lee‘s upcoming action thriller titled A Dark Truth. Quite interesting look at the leading trio – Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker and Eva Longoria, indeed. As you see, they all look worried, and like that’s not enough,  they have a reason to be afraid, very afraid…

Lee’s movie deals with man’s inhumanity and unconscious actions against the environment and asks some questions, like – is there is a moral and ethical obligation when talking about boundaries, borders and human interaction?

With the ever-increasing depletion of earth’s natural resource of water serving as the backdrop, a multi-national corporation disregards basic human needs that result in widespread illness and a people’s uprising. The distress causes unlikely allies to conspire and seek redemption for past deeds and the greater good.

Exclusive Portrait: Zachary Gordon for ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days’

4 August 2012 6:24 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – We’ve seen him grow from a “Wimpy Kid” to a teenage movie star. Zachary Gordon stars as Greg Heffley in the latest film in a popular series, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.” Gordon was in Chicago promoting the film on opening weekend, and is making appearances at the Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, Ill, and Hollywood Blvd. Cinema in Woodridge.

Zachary Gordon was born in Oak Park, California, and was already a veteran TV and film actor when in 2010 he landed the role of Greg Heffley, the put-upon hero of the Wimpy Kid series of films. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” finds Greg in 7th grade, so Gordon has grown with the character.

Joe Arce was able to photograph Gordon in Chicago, while appearing on the “Windy City Live” talk show promoting the film. Zachary Gordon will introduce his current film, plus the first “Diary of a Wimpy Kid, »

Film Review: Total Retread for ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days’

3 August 2012 8:53 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The month of August contain the “dog days” of summer, when the season lumbers to a hazy and hot conclusion. How appropriate that the third film of a popular series would be called ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days,’ because like summer’s end it feels lethargic. Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron and Steve Zahn star.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

This installment of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series has a couple of distinctions – Zachary Gordon, who portrays the title character, has hit puberty, with a deeper voice and seemingly less energy to tackle wimpy Greg. Secondly, the emergence of background characters in telling the story. Greg’s Dad and brother are more importantly featured than best friend Rowley, contrary to the first two films. This all adds up to less enthusiastic “Diary,” which meanders without any spark, a contractual obligation rather than a beloved adaptation from the popular books.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

Directed by: David Bowers

Cast: Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris

Running Time: 1 hr 34 mins

Rating: PG

Release Date: August 3, 2012

Plot: School is out and Greg (Gordon) and wants to play video games all summer. When his dad (Zahn) wants him to get motivated, Greg creates a series of lies.

Who’S It For? Do you have a kid who has trouble listening? Are you a lazy parent looking for any sort of entertainment to do the parenting for you? You’ve found your trilogy!

Overall

For as long as I can remember (the last three years), I’ve had one night ruined because of these Wimpy movies. The main problem with the films is that it has nothing to do with looking or feeling wimpy. Gordon once again plays Greg Heffley as an arrogant, selfish, lying, bratty kid. »

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days – review

The eponymous kid goes on summer holiday in this amiable entertainment that rattles along likably enough

School's out for the summer, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid is back for a sequel. Zachary Gordon is the eponymous kid, Greg; Devon Bostick is his supposedly cool elder brother, Rodrick, and Steve Zahn is their long-suffering dad. Greg's hoping the summer will bring nothing more than an opportunity to mature and improve as a gamer, but fate has other plans. The first movie looked pretty moderate, but the new one is an amiable entertainment that rattles along likably enough. It begins with the design conceit of the black-and-white line drawings morphing into live-action figures, but this is dropped after the introductory sequence; otherwise it's a pretty straight family comedy. Zachary Gordon himself may become the Shia Labeouf or Joseph Gordon-Levitt of the future, or fade from view after these movies. Either way, »

Title: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days Directed By: David Bowers Starring: Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris, Peyton List, Grayson Russell, Karan Brar There’s a reason I’ve continued to cover the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” film franchise since the first installment hit back in 2010; they’re particularly well made family films and, sure enough, the third film, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days,” falls right in line. Summer has arrived! Trouble is, Greg (Zachary Gordon) and his father, Frank (Steve Zahn), have two very different ideas of what summer vacation should entail. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days Review

30 July 2012 3:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The third big-screen adaptation of the popular kids books (merging together the third and forth titles in author/cartoonist Jeff Kinney’s series) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is as every bit as funny and charming as its predecessors, thanks to a surprisingly nuanced script and likable and committed performances from all involved.

It’s the last day of school which marks a three-month summer vacation for Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) and he’s planning on making the most of that time by spending the holidays shackled to his games system. Greg’s father Frank (Steve Zahn) has other plans for his leisure-minded son, and informs him that a junior internship has been organised at his workplace.

In order to get out of spending quality time with his father, Greg fibs about finding employment at the local country club he regularly frequents with best friend Rowley – a place »
