Alien: Covenant Barely Gets Box Office Win Over Guardians of the Galaxy 2

21 May 2017 1:10 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

As expected, Marvel's box office blockbuster sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had no trouble taking care of business in its first two weeks at the box office. In its third frame this weekend, though, it was expected to be a close race between Guardians 2 and 20th Century Fox's Alien: Covenant, and this weekend's box office race most certainly delivered. It was in fact a very close race, with Alien: Covenant coming out on top with $36 million, with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 following close behind with $35 million. Since these movies are so close together, it's possible that they could swap spots on the charts when the actual numbers are released.

This opening weekend tally is far below the $51 million debut of 2012's Prometheus, with this Alien prequel, set 10 years after the events of Prometheus. The prequel Prometheus was see as quite the disappointment to many fans ,but Alien: Covenant »

Cannes: Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Okja’ Booed During Technical Glitch and Netflix Logo at First Press Screening

19 May 2017 3:32 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Bong Joon ho’s “Okja” was booed at its Cannes Film Festival press screening on Friday after a technical issue caused the film to be projected in the wrong aspect ratio for several minutes at the start of the movie. Boos were also heard when the Netflix logo appeared on the screen prior to the glitch. The screening at the Lumière Auditorium proceeded normally after the issue was resolved.

Cannes 2017: Okja Revealed! [Trailer]

18 May 2017 12:17 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Oh Bong Joon Ho. You crazy, crazy man.

We all knew that Joon Ho's new movie was a creature feature but I'm pretty certain no one expected it to be about a giant pig. That's right. Okja is, for all intensive purposes, a giant swine.

Seo-Hyun Ahn stars as Mija, a young girl whose best friend is a massive animal she's named Okja. Her idyllic life is turned upside down when a multi-national company, the face of which is none other than Tilda Swinton, swoops in to take the animal - the first of what they hope is a new source of meat. Devastated and willing to do anything to rescue her best friend, Mija teams up with a ragtag group of animal rights activists, led by Paul Dano, to rescue her pet.

Okja also stars Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, Devon Bostick, Giancarlo Esp [Continued ...] »

First Trailer Hits For Netflix Original Film Okja, & It’s Gorgeous

18 May 2017 11:45 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Netflix has spent the past few years becoming one of the most respected television “networks” around. They started with shows like House of Cards, but after producing dozens of original series, and raking in solid review after solid review for their shows, they’ve made it their next mission to do the same for film. But can they actually succeed at becoming a reputable TV And film studio?

Later this year, we’ll be getting the Brad Pitt film War Machine, but don’t think their commitment ends there. On the more magical side of things, they have a film called Okja. This flick is co-written and directed by Bong Joon Ho, the man behind such films as The Host (no, not the one based on the Stephanie Meyer book) and Snowpiercer, the latter of which starred Chris Evans.

Full Trailer Arrives for Bong Joon-ho's Film 'Okja' Premiering at Cannes

18 May 2017 7:44 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"You should know the situation is not good." This looks like it's going to be amazing. Netflix has revealed a full-length trailer for new film from Bong Joon-ho, titled Okja, just one day before the world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. I'm a huge fan of Bong Joon-ho, and this looks even better than I imagined. Tilda Swinton is back (from Snowpiercer) in the cast, along with Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Lily Collins, Steven Yeun, Giancarlo Esposito, Devon Bostick, Shirley Henderson, Daniel Henshall, and Choi Woo-shik. The main girl, named Mija, is played by Ahn Seo-hyun. This trailer shows a lot and sets up the complete story about a corporation kidnapping her animal friend, with tons of footage of the giant pig creature thing, and much more. I can't wait to see this! We'll have a review up tomorrow. Check this out. Here's the first full-length trailer (+ poster) for Bong Joon-ho's Okja, »

‘Okja’ Trailer: Bong Joon Ho’s Palme d’Or Contender Introduces the World’s Most Adorable Beast — Watch

In advance of its splashy bow at Cannes this week, Netflix has released the first full trailer for its much-anticipated Bong Joon Ho monster joint, “Okja.” And it’s adorable.

Tilda SwintonJake Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins, Paul Dano, and Ahn Seo-hyun star in the monster film, which appears to marry the concerns of corporate greed (care of Swinton’s character) and charming inter-species friendship (the eponymous beast and Ahn) into one glorious mash-up of humor and terror as only Bong could create.

First Full Trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Okja’ Finds an Animal on the Loose

17 May 2017 8:42 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It may not win the Palme d’Or if the jury president has his way, but that doesn’t lessen our anticipation for Bong Joon-hoo‘s Snowpiercer follow-up Okja. Starring Ahn Seo-hyun, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, Devon Bostick, Byun Hee-bong, and Shirley Henderson, the Netflix-produced and distributed feature tracks the struggle to stop a multinational corporation from kidnapping the titular monster. The first full trailer has now arrived which shows off much more of the adventure.

“At first, Darius Khondji, my cinematographer, and I wanted to shoot Okja on 35mm, but Netflix insisted that all Netflix originals be shot and archived in 4K,” Bong tells Variety, discussing the approach to cinematography. “Khondji then figured that we would use Alexa 65, which equates to a 70mm film in digital format. It makes a great cinematic vibe.”

Can Alien: Covenant Burst Through Guardians 2 at the Box Office?

16 May 2017 10:13 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Marvel's blockbuster sequel Guardians of the Galaxy 2 had no trouble destroying its box office competition last weekend with $65.2 million, up slightly over the Sunday estimate of $63 million, and posting a 55.5% decrease from last weekend's $145 million debut. The sequel wasn't given any real competition by the underperforming Snatched ($19.5 million) and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ($15.3 million), but this weekend, it faces its toughest challenge yet, with 20th Century Fox's Alien: Covenant, along with the studio's family-friendly sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Warner Bros.' Everything, Everything. We're predicting that the R-rated Alien: Covenant should have no trouble taking the top spot this weekend, with an estimated $39.6 million.

This figure does come in far below the $51 million debut of 2012's Prometheus, but there are a number of factors as to why it may come in below its predecessor. Prometheus was seen as quite the disappointment »

Film Review: ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul’

15 May 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Until the dread day when CGI replaces actors outright, there will be dilemmas like the one that faced makers of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” features: After three films adapted from Jeff Kinney’s hugely popular books, the juvenile thespians aged out of their roles. There’s been some fan grumbling about their unfortunate if inevitable replacement in “The Long Haul,” which reboots the series after a five-year layoff. But the entirely new cast steps in seamlessly — in some instances they might actually be improved models — and returning producer-director David Bowers, this time sharing screenplay credit with Kinney himself, delivers an amiable, fast-paced entry that should win over fans.

The ninth volume so far (No. 12 is due this fall), “Long Haul” isn’t necessarily among the best, but it provides the Heffley family with various changes of scenery that sufficiently differentiate this latest screen installment from its predecessors. The »

'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul': Film Review

After a five-year break, the Heffley family is back in action — although with a completely different cast playing them — in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, the fourth feature taken from Jeff Kinney’s highly relatable series of cartoon novels chronicling the life of a hapless middle schooler.

The hiatus after 2012’s Dog Days effectively aged out original lead Zachary Gordon (now 19), as well as his big brother/tormentor played by Devon Bostick (now 25), and while they were cleaning house, the producers also sent original parents Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris packing. Watch: Tilda Swinton Imparts an Important Message in Video for Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Okja’

27 April 2017 7:38 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

“Pigs deserve happy dreams, just like the rest of us.” That’s the message imparted by Lucy Mirando, aka Tilda Swinton, in a new viral video for Bong Joon-ho’s Okja. The highly-anticipated new film from the Snowpiercer director will drop on Netflix in June, featuring a cast that includes, in addition to Swinton, Ahn Seo-hyun, Jake Gyllenhaal, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Dano, Steven Yeun, Lily Collins, Devon Bostick, Byun Hee-bong, and Shirley Henderson. Ahn Seo-hyun plays Mija, a young girl from South Korea who has devoted her life to caring for a giant animal named Okja. Unfortunately, the multi-national Mirando Corporation, lead by Swinton’s Lucy Mirando, wants to sweep in and steal Okja for their own nefarious purposes.

In this delightfully bizarre, falsely chipper viral ad, Swinton’s pink-haired Lucy Mirando describes with wide-eyed glee the various products and activities her company is engaged in, from organic harvesting and »

Tweeks: #NotMyRodrick

30 March 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

We have something very serious to discuss this week.

With the recasting for the 4th Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie: The Long Haul, the comedic soul of the series (and emo dream boy), Roderick Heffley has been replaced by an actor who looks like Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka. And we know, like us, you won’t stand idle while this happens. Devon Bostick is Rodrick. He will always be Rodrick.

And if you have no idea what we’re talking about, you really need to get on your meme game — but we’ll explain the #NotMyRodrick movement to you anyway.

Of all the many, many original features lining Netflix’s slate for 2017 – think War Machine or David Ayer’s fantastical Bright – there’s a vocal pocket of subscribers keeping a close eye on Okja, the all-star monster movie in the works from South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho.

Best known for helming Memories of Murder, The Host – another monster movie cut from a similar cloth as Okja – and 2013 cult hit Snowpiercer, Joon-ho has assembled quite the ensemble cast to bring his latest feature to life, and today we have three new images designed to shed light on the human side of Netflix’s upcoming creature feature. Given that Okja largely centers on the unusual bond between the titular animal and a young girl named Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun), it’s only fitting that the young up-and-comer is ushered into the spotlight here. This new trailer starts off the exact same way as the first trailer, which arrived in earlier February. But Wimp fans, don't be so quick to turn away. There is a ton of new footage here and plenty of fresh jokes as a squad of seagulls attack the Heffley family en route to grandma's house.
