Jon Bernthal: the secret star of Me And Earl And The Dying Girl

1 September 2015 1:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A brief, brilliant turn in this year’s Sundance hit is the latest chapter in this actor’s overlooked oeuvre. Is Jon Bernthal finally about to hit the big time?

Related: Sundance 2015 review: Me & Earl & the Dying Girl – a slacker film with heart

I won’t linger long on Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, as it elicits confused reactions from me. On the one hand, it’s clearly the summit of Young Adult achievement in cinema thus far (whatever that’s worth). Expertly shot and edited by director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon – a very gifted Scorsese protege – this feels like an “I can do anything” calling-card movie. And, yes, it’ll bite you in the heart even when you’re laughing like a hyena.

We Are Your Friends suffers one of the worst Hollywood openings of all time

31 August 2015 10:37 AM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

In case you missed it (and according to the box office numbers, you probably did), We Are Your Friends is the flick starring Zac Efron as a DJ trying to break into the Edm scene as well as Emily Ratajkowski's panties. Sure, there's a sub-plot about his friends working for a shady Jon Bernthal and also a sub-plot about Wes Bentley as a music producer and . . . well, according to our review from Chris Bumbray,... Zac Efron film We Are Your Friends has one of the worst wide-release Us box office openings ever

30 August 2015 3:31 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Zac Efron's new film did manage to crack into a top ten list when it opened this weekend - unfortunately, it isn't the kind of list any actor would want to have on his resume.

We Are Your Friends opened with $1.8 million this weekend, a figure that landed the film at number four on the list of the worst wide-release debuts in box office history, reports Entertainment Weekly.

The list compiles the films that generated the worst box office openings for films that opened in 2000 theatres or more on their debut weekend.

The story of Efron's aspiring DJ trails behind 2008's Delgo and 2012's Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure, which take first and second place respectively, and also managed to score a bigger box office than last year's 10th anniversary re-release of Saw.

Fair Weather Daydreams: Joseph’s Debut Mixes Surprising Energy into Vapid SoCo Slush

From its familiar yet nicely edited introductory credits, to its sweaty palmed electro enhanced climax, Max Joseph’s Bpm booming coming-of-age drama We Are Your Friends sometimes surprises by tapping into an energetic vein of youth on a precipice. But an intense focus on extra sensory visual flourishes meant to channel all the right vibes tends to distract from more important necessary developments, mainly the creation of empathetic characters. Instead, this tepid gaggle of immature San Fernando Valley bros comprises an achingly obnoxious focal point the film never recovers from, no matter how sincere lead Zac Efron desperately appeals to us as the mostly reasonable protagonist.

Cole (Efron) feels trapped in the sticky wasteland known as the San Fernando Valley. Estranged from his parents, he lives on the couch of best friend Mason (Johnny Weston). In a flash of sporadic voiceover, »

In Real World, 'Compton' Not (Anytime Soon) to Break Record as Highest-Grossing Domestic Hit Directed by Black Filmmaker

'Straight Outta Compton' poster. Weekend box office: 'Straight Outta Compton' to beat weak competitors, but still far from being top blockbuster directed by black filmmaker If you thought last weekend was bad at the U.S. and Canada box office, you should see what's in store for this weekend, Aug. 28-30, '15. For starters, only one movie, F. Gary Gray's sleeper hit Straight Outta Compton, is expected to earn more than $10 million. The rest – and that includes Zac Efron, Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, and the Power of (Christian) Prayer – will perform quite powerlessly indeed. In case Straight Outta Compton reaches the box office gurus' estimated $15 million, it will get close to the $140 million mark. Bear in mind there's no guarantee that will happen; despite basically no competition, the drop-off rate of Gray's hip hopping film was steeper than expected last weekend. “For Daredevil, we produced over a thousand supporting visual effects shots over the entire series,” states Shade VFX CEO Brian Godwin. “And these ranged from complete digital doubles where stunts weren’t safe to have Daredevil jumping off a rooftop, to blood-hits and wounds. In particular, there was a lot of support to the idea of the violence and gore that happens in Daredevil. Which was a big departure from Marvel — was to try and set this story in a more realistic and dark place, the real streets of New York.”

Review: 'We Are Your Friends' works when the friends are away and the music plays

26 August 2015 4:55 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

At first glance “We Are Your Friends” may look like a shameless attempt for Hollywood to jump on the popularity of Edm (that stands for electronic dance music for everyone out there who remembers when it was called house or techno).   Movie history is littered with terrible (and a few not-so terrible) films trying to make a buck off the trendy offerings of disco, punk, hip-hop, grunge and even good ol’ fashioned rock n’roll.  While you can’t discount that potential marketing element in the film’s financing, director and director Max Joseph and his co-screenwriter Meaghan Oppenheimer have significantly larger aspirations.  In fact, they have some teaching to do.  Before we dive into that intriguing prospect, however, let’s meet the “Friends” in question. The film centers on four longtime friends who are marshaling their resources in an attempt to break free of the shackles of growing up »

We Are Your Friends review: “A well-rounded drama”

We Are Your Friends review: A well-rounded drama that engrosses from the off without really hitting any bum-notes along the way. We Are Your Friends review

We Are Your Friends is a new drama based around aspiring DJ Cole Carter (Zac Efron), and his group of friends; a gang of twenty-somethings living life to the full. Set in the San Fernando Valley, which the film tells us is famous for its intense heat, the porn industry and the best sushi in town, We Are Your Friends is a tale of forbidden love and finding the right path in life. The film is directed by Max Joseph, who is mostly known for his work on the TV series Catfish, along with Nev Schulman. He makes his feature-directing debut with We Are Your Friends, and also co-wrote the screenplay with Meaghan Oppenheimer.

Film Review: ‘We Are Your Friends’

25 August 2015 12:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

At long last, fans of Electronic Dance Music have a movie to call their own — a moving and authentic portrait of the artist as a young DJ, struggling to find himself in that tricky gray zone where personal and professional desires converge. But enough about Mia Hansen-Love’s “Eden.” For viewers who prefer their coming-of-age stories told in broad, believe-in-yourself brushstrokes, say hello to “We Are Your Friends,” a brashly entertaining, none-too-persuasive tale of a talented 23-year-old musician from the San Fernando Valley trying to penetrate the glittering upper echelons of Hollywood nightlife. Striving to capture a definitive screenshot of millennial angst, Max Joseph’s formally creative, dramatically conventional directing debut probably won’t earn raves from Edm devotees, particularly those who reject the notion of Zac Efron as their head-banging Hollywood poster boy. Still, there’s no denying that the star’s hard-to-resist appeal will draw mainstream eyes and »

Quiz: DJ Movies

24 August 2015 8:30 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Zac Efron’s latest, We Are Your Friends, is taking him back to his musical roots. The High School Musical days might be over, but Efron’s still making music on screen.

We Are Your Friends stars Efron as an aspiring DJ navigating the choppy waters of the struggle for fame. The electronic music scene is a cut-throat one, where there are fortunes to be made and some sick beats to be dropped.

As the concept of an electronic DJ is relatively new in comparison to the history of film, Hollywood hasn’t tackled the subject very often. A more common form of DJ found on film is the radio DJ, covering a career that has enjoyed a much longer lifespan. We’re talking about some real classics here: Christian Slater in Pump Up the Volume, Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam… we could go on, but we’ll let »

'Daredevil' Season 2 Photo Boxes Up the Red Suit

20 August 2015 9:34 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The suit makes the man. That's the statement boldly declared on an official photo from Marvel's Daredevil as it prepares for Season 2 in Spring 2016. Netflix sent out the promo via the show's official Twitter, which finds Matt Murdock's iconic red costume boxed up, sitting next to his walking cane.

Charlie Cox, who plays blind lawyer-turned-Hell's Kitchen vigilante, spent most of Marvel's Daredevil Season 1 fighting crime in a black bandana and matching tactical wear that cloaked him in the shadows of the night. That look was inspired by Frank Miller's iconic Marvel comic book run. It wasn't until the very end of the last episodes that we got to see Daredevil slip into his more recognizable, and certainly more iconic, red costume. As this latest sneak peek indicates, Marvel's Daredevil Season 2 is picking up right where we left off. And the new suit will be seen on the streets of Hell's Kitchen in full-effect. »

Will "We Are Your Friends" be the cherry on top of what has overall been a pretty lousy summer for Warner Bros.?
