Pixar plan Doc Hudson homage in ‘Cars 2′

27 December 2010 7:38 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Owen Wilson (Lightning McQueen) has shared Pixar’s plans to address the character of Doc Hudson, portrayed by the late Paul Newman in the first Cars film. According to Wilson, speaking to Parade magazine, there will be an homage or tribute in Cars 2:

Owen Wilson, who voices race car Lightning McQueen, remembers Newman fondly from the first film: “Paul loved fast cars. He said, ‘If you have to worry about the risk, you’re dead already.’ I couldn’t relate to that. I’m happy in my Prius.” As for the sequel, Wilson says, “There’s a nice homage to Paul in it.”

Cars 2 sees star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. »

Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Two

19 December 2010 2:05 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Beaver

Opens: March 23rd 2011

Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

Director: Jodie Foster

Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.

Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.

The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos, »

Early Buzz: Pixar’s Cars 2

10 December 2010 1:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

You've probably noticed the influx of Pixar postings every-time the Emmeryville animation studio produces a new film -- yup, I love Pixar. But the one film in the entire Pixar catalog that I don't love (not to say that I don't like it, it's just a few steps below the rest) is Cars. To me, it almost feels like one of the movies Dreamworks Animation had produced at that point of time. And if it weren't for the heart of the Route 66 storyline, I probably would've enjoyed it a lot less. The film wasn't considered a huge box office success, grossing $461,981,604 worldwide -- less than Pixar films of previous years like Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo (which in comparison made $867.8 million worldwide). But the merchandising for the film has brought in billions in sales, which is why Disney green lit a sequel and began construction »

Larry King Will Do Stand Up Comedy Now

We are all buying tickets to Larry King‘s first show no matter how much it costs or where it is. From an interview with New York Magazine: “I might do Internet stuff.” One definite project is a comedy tour. “I’m funny,” says King. “I’m going to do stand-up. That’s what I love.” First of all, it’s crazy how much more suited he is to assume the stage name Larry The Cable Guy than is the actual Larry The Cable Guy. Secondly, I strongly recommend you read the rest of the interview. Just Kidding. Good god. Don’t do that. It’s literally a whole interview with Larry King. But you know you’re excited to see Larry King do stand-up. You hope he puts together a whole hour. And furthermore, You hope it is absolutely filthy. You want him to do 15 minutes on using his »

Michael Caine, Jason Isaacs & More Providing Voices for 'Cars 2'

17 November 2010 2:12 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Yesterday, we were pretty sure the easily recognizable voice of Michael Caine was heard in the full teaser trailer for Pixar's forthcoming sequel Cars 2. Today Empire has confirmed that Caine is indeed voicing the spy car Finn McMissile. In addition, more cast members have been revealed. Joining returning voice talents like Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy will be Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy from Harry Potter), Emily Mortimer (Harry Brown), Joe Mantegna ("Criminal Minds"), Peter Jacobson ("House") and Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong). Below you'll find some brief details on the characters they'll be voicing. Mortimer will be voicing a spy car in-training named Holley Shiftwell (I like the subtle James Bond-esque, sexual innuendo) while Isaacs will play a spy jet (likely the one from the first promotional image) named  Siddeley. Meanwhile, Mantegna is playing Grem, Jacobson is voicing Acer and Kretschmann will be Professor Z, but details on »

With Pixar officially launching the marketing campaign for next summer's "Cars 2" by dropping a couple of fresh teaser trailers for the film earlier this week, the biggest question mark that was left with fans was, "Who is voicing the damn thing?" However, Empire has revealed just who is behind the shiny pieces of digitized metal reporting that Michael Caine plays seasoned spy… »
