Film Review: ‘Tales of Halloween’

Horror omnibuses are frequently a mixed bag. Sometimes they’re not even a bag of tricks, let alone treats, but more like a box of inedible rocks. That, unfortunately, is pretty much the story with “Tales of Halloween,” a collection of 10 macabre miniatures that are disposably diverting at best and execrable at worst, despite the participation of some familiar genre faces and directors. Opened on 12 screens around the country Oct. 16, simultaneous with a VOD/iTunes release, the pic will no doubt make a more lasting impact as junk food for buffs in home formats.

Thinly connected by audio input from Adrienne Barbeau as a sexy-voiced radio DJ, the tales here all take place on All Hallow’s Eve, presumably in the same town. Horror Round-Up: Ouija Seance Event, Burying the Ex, The CW’s ‘Dead People’ Pilot, New Tales of Halloween Images

We’re back with another horror news round-up, this time focusing on a recent seance event that took place in Hollywood ahead of Universal’s home media release of Ouija. We also have acquisition details on Joe Dante’s zom com, Burying the Ex, as well as news on another supernatural pilot order from The CW, and new images from Epic Pictures Group’s upcoming horror anthology movie, Tales of Halloween.

A Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes film from Universal Pictures, Ouija comes out on Blu-ray and DVD today and to celebrate the film’s home media release, Universal recently hosted a get-together in Hollywood that included Jason Blum and real life Ouija guru Robert Murch (an advisor on the film), who showed those in attendance how to conduct a proper seance:

New Details on Tales of Halloween

Late last year, Epic Pictures Group teased Tales of Halloween, a horror anthology movie that will feature segments from Lucky McKee, Darren Lynn Bousman, Neil Marshall, and more. Today, we have a new details on the short films, including with the cast list, which reveals planned cameos from Joe Dante, John Landis, Adam Green, Mick Garris, Stuart Gordon, and Adrienne Barbeau:

“Hollywood, Calif., January 5, 2015 – Epic Pictures Group is proud to announce the cast, cameos and short stories surrounding the highly anticipated horror anthology Tales of Halloween.

“We have received so much support from the horror community in this film,” said Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald. “Joe Dante and Adam Green and many notable actors came to the set and showed their respect and enthusiasm, even participating in the film with key cameo roles. Tales Of Halloween Anthology Filled To The Brim With Cameos; Story Titles Revealed!

Last month, we reported the announcement of  “The October Society”, a group of horror filmmakers coming together to give fans Tales Of Halloween, a series of interconnected stories each with a unique Halloween theme.  The concept was created by Soulmate director Axelle Carolyn and the list of directors involved is an impressive one, with Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III & IV), Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate), Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy), Neil Marshall (The Descent), Lucky McKee (All Cheerleaders Die, The Woman), Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), Ryan Schifrin (Abominable), John Skipp (Stay at Home Dad), and Paul Solet (Grace) all tackling their own story. Epic Pictures, responsible for Big Ass Spider! and the upcoming (and highly anticipated) Turbo Kid is producing.
