His wife, Kathleen Matthews, was a news anchor with WJLA-TV, the Washington, DC ABC affiliate. They have three children: Michael, Thomas Matthews, and Caroline.
After working for President Carter, was a senior aide for then Speaker of the House Thomas P. 'Tip' O'Neill, for six years during the administration of President Ronald Reagan.
