TwitterWatch: Tweets From Chris Colfer, Neil Patrick Harris, Alec Mapa and More!

22 December 2009 12:19 PM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

We’re back with another edition of TwitterWatch, our weekly update of tweeted fun!

John Amaechi kicks things off for us this week, and let me just say it’s nice to see we’re not the only one’s addicted to Matt Alber’s “End of the World” video:

Moving a little closer to home, it looks like Jai Rodriguez had some fun during a recent production of Rent:

And speaking of the theatre, how many of you will just die when Michael Urie and company actually hit the stage with this?

Meanwhile, Chris Colfer and the rest of the Glee kids are already prepping for spring’s new episodes, and it looks like Kurt is going to be just as fabulous as ever:

As we’re so close to Christmas, many of our stars are out and about traveling and even Neil Patrick Harris gets stuck at the »

Brittany Murphy has been remembered by many of her friends, family and colleagues after her unexpected death on Sunday. Friends like former flame Ashton Kutcher and co-stars Alicia Silverstone and Donald Faison all mourned the loss of the 32-year-old actress, with others remembering her talent and upbeat demeanor.

"I got to know Brittany when we made the film 'Uptown Girls'," "New Moon" star Dakota Fanning told E! News in a statement. "We became great friends despite the fact we were many years apart in age. Brittany had such a warm childlike spirit that drew people to her. With her goes a piece of my heart and I will miss her terribly. I know how strong Brittany's love was for her family and my heart »

Photos – Ugly Betty 4.11 "Back in Her Place"

21 December 2009 3:13 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Obviously I haven't gotten caught up yet on season 4 of Ugly Betty, because I had no idea that Connor has returned.  But he's back and he's cuter than ever, as is evidenced in these promo photos for the January 13th episode.

You can also view photos for the January 6th episode.

Betty Tells Guest Star Fisher Stevens About  Her Worst Week Ever, On ABC's "Ugly Betty"

"Back in Her Place" – A battered but unbowed Betty recounts her worst week Ever to Mr. Z (guest star Fisher Stevens) as the show flashes back to her horrible last few days. Frustrated over the frivolous assignments Wilhemina gives her at Mode, and inspired by Audrey Hepburn's memoir, Betty creates her own blog about amazing charitable ventures that inspire her. However, as her hobby enriches her, her job is nearly killing her, since Wilhemina tortures Betty with beauty experiments for future stories. Meanwhile, »

AfterElton.com's 2009 Visibility Awards!

20 December 2009 10:46 PM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

What?! It’s not enough that we spent the whole year providing you with insightful news and analysis on gay and bisexual entertainment – now we have to pick which 2009 projects we think best represented gay and bisexual men?!

Sorry, we’re getting a little Grinch-y around here come year-end.

But the fact is, gay and bisexual entertainment-related news is inexorably linked with the issue of visibility. If you know anything at all about the history of such entertainment, you know that it’s almost always been “controversial.” As passionate as the creators of these projects have always been, there’s been a similarly strong counter-pressure to keep these themes hidden or under wraps.

As a result, for a website like ours, covering the “news” of these projects inevitably becomes a question of championing the ones of quality (and giving the hook to those who don’t measure up, or that »

David Blue Hoping to Make 'Ugly Betty' Comeback

20 December 2009 10:48 AM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Even though Marc (Michael Urie) has met a new man at the Bahamas, his ex-fianc?? Cliff might still have feelings for him.  Actor David Blue has revealed that he does want his character to return on Ugly Betty, probably to finish up what happened before he left.

On an interview with Digital Spy, Blue announced that he's hoping to make a comeback on the ABC dramedy.  He's currently starring on Syfy's Stargate Universe, but getting a break from there may mean he'll be reprising his role as Marc St. James' love interest.

TwitterWatch: A Hodgepodge of Drunken Tweets, Political Ramblings and More!

15 December 2009 9:17 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

We’re back with another edition of TwitterWatch, our weekly update of tweeted fun!

Kicking things off for us, singer Matt Alber and former contestant turned choreographer Travis Wall may be giving us a reason to actually tune in to this week’s So You Think You Can Dance:

In other TV news, with tweets like these from Michael Urie and Justin Bond, it looks like Ugly Betty’s going to get really interesting:

And while we’re on the TV kick, how excited are you that Neil Patrick Harris is trying his hand at directing?

Now on a more serious subject, apparently Joe Lieberman doesn’t have many fans these days … at least not with Darryl Stephens, Wilson Cruz or Patrik-Ian Polk:

But of course Twitter’s not all doom and gloom. Just check out the drunken tweets of Cazwell, Stephen Fry and John Amaechi:

Gone Too Soon: Eighteen Gays on Television We Would’ve Liked to See More Of

11 December 2009 8:20 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

We've all had that friendship that was cut short for whatever reason — because your family moved, because you switched jobs, because you were a "greaser" and they were a "soc" — and we're left to wonder: what might have been?

The same is true for gays on television. Television programs are canceled for a lot of reasons, and it's definitely not always because of a lack of quality.

But what if these characters had stuck around a little longer? Who knows what kind of adoring or intimate relationship we viewers might have developed with them?

Here are a few of the folks I'd like to rescue from the Island of Lost Gay TV Characters:

Fred Savage as Mitch Crumb with co-star Jane Curtain

Mitch Crumb (from Crumbs)

If there was ever a show that coulda been a contender, it was Crumbs, a 2006 vehicle for a grown-up Fred Savage (who had become »

December 11th marks the final Ugly Betty episode before its holiday hiatus and the Suarez familiy are celebrating Christmas.  This will be the last Ugly Betty to air on Friday nights, as it will be moving to Wednesday nights starting in January.  Check out the seven sneak peeks released by ABC below and view the photos I previously posted.

"Be-Shure" – Against the backdrop of Ignacio's multi-culti holiday dinner that he prepares for his new flame Jean (Faith Prince), who is Jewish, Betty and Hilda have pregnancy scares. Worse, they purchase their Be-Shure instant pregnancy tests from the local pharmacy — where Jean works and Ignacio is shopping. Meanwhile, Hartley installs Willie's replacement, a clueless Hollywood mogul, Denise Ludwig (Nadia Dajani), whose claim to fame is a tacky movie, but Marc has a plan to get Willie back — if only Daniel will agree. Ugly Betty: Will a New Timeslot Save the Show from Being Cancelled?

3 December 2009 3:47 PM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

After spending several weeks stranded with a "Friday night death slot," ABC has decided to give former hit show Ugly Betty a better time slot. Will it help or is the show still doomed to be cancelled?

Ugly Betty debuted in 2006 and follows young Betty Suarez (America Ferrera) as she navigates her way through the world of high-fashion, working at the trendy magazine Mode. Others in the cast include Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Mark Indelicato, Michael Urie, Vanessa Williams, and Ashley Jensen.

The series was a modest hit for the 2006-07 season with a 3.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 11.3 million total viewers. The following year, the prized demo remained essentially the same (3.6) but dropped in viewers to 9.4 million.

For year three, Ugly Betty fell significantly, to a 2.8 rating in »

8 Sneak Peeks – Ugly Betty 4.08 "The Bahamas Triangle"

1 December 2009 6:34 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The Ugly Betty gang is headed to the gorgeous Bahamas for the December 4th episode (if only I wasn't allergic to the sun….).  ABC has released 8 sneak peeks for the episode, which you can view below. You can also view the promo photos we posted earlier.

In The Steamy Bahamas Things Get Hot, And Romantic Pairings Abound, On ABC's "Ugly Betty"

Guest Stars Include Shakira, Christie Brinkley and Matt Newton (Becki Newton's Brother)

"The Bahamas Triangle" — In the steamy Bahamas, the love triangle between Betty, Matt and Amanda explodes, and romantic pairings abound. Things should be dreamy at the Atlantis resort, where even Shakira (portraying herself) is staying, but Betty has a nightmarish photo shoot after Willie learns her nemesis, Penelope Graybridge (Christie Brinkley), snagged a coveted job, and, even more importantly, discovers Connor is very much alive. Silvio Horta: Marc Gets a New Guy on 'Ugly Betty'

30 November 2009 12:50 PM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

On Ugly Betty, romances hardly end on a happy note.  But there's always something new to bring on the table right after, which will be the case for Marc St. James (Michael Urie).  Showrunner Silvio Horta hinted that um, infatuation's in the air with the Bahamas episode coming up, especially for this character.

Ugly Betty executive producers Horta and Jon Kinnally told AfterElton.com about this new storyline, affecting the development of Marc.  We all know about his relationship with Cliff (David Blue) in the second season, but the writer's strike hindered the show from pursuing that further.  While Cliff could've been brought back, it was simply a better idea to give Marc a fresh start.

I'll admit right now that I am not caught up on season 4 of Ugly Betty, so I'm not sure whether this synopsis will be spoilery or not, but some of you may want to just skip to the photos instead.  Or, if you choose not to read this, then at least check out the photos for the December 4th episode of Ugly Betty.  If you don't mind some spoilers, then check out the synopsis and promo photos below for the December 11th episode.

'Ugly Betty's Becki Newton Debuts on Stage with 'Girl Crazy'

We're used to seeing Becki Newton's Amanda team up with Marc to scheme against Betty on television.  However, the Ugly Betty actress isn't just limiting herself to that role.  Last week, she made her theatre debut in the City Center Encores! production of the Gershwin musical "Girl Crazy."

Newton starred opposite her real-life husband Chris Diamantopoulous on the musical, and played the character Molly Gray.  The actress told TheatreMania about her debut, along with her plans to work onstage alongside her Betty co-star Michael Urie.

What’s Next for "Ugly Betty" (Gay-wise)? And Would There be a "Glee" Without "Betty"?

20 November 2009 10:32 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Warning: The following article contains general plot spoilers about the upcoming season of Ugly Betty.

Last week, Ugly Betty aired “Backseat Betty,” a touching episode involving Betty’s 15-year-old nephew, Justin. Over the course of the episode, we saw the friendship that is developing between Justin and Marc, an out gay man. But at the end of the episode, Justin announced, to everyone’s surprise, “I’m not gay” – although it was written in a very open-ended way.

We were curious about the future of Justin, Marc, and Ugly Betty in general, so we asked Silvio Horta, the out gay man who is the creator and executive producer for the series, and executive producers Jon Kinnally, who is also an out gay man, and Tracy Poust, who wrote last week’s episode.

What exactly did it mean when Justin claimed he wasn’t gay after being named homecoming queen by his classmates? »

We talk about the creation of the storyline, how the actors felt when they learned about the plot twist and why Kish has became such a sensation.

Plus, we find out what’s next for Llanview’s gays. Where do Oliver and Kyle go from here? Is Kyle’s ex Nick (Nicholas Rodriguez) out of the picture? And what about that baby that Oliver unknowingly fathered? We cover all of that and more in our interview.

Their honor roll on the cover is one I can get behind.

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.

The 16th Annual Out 100 issue is, well, out. The cover, as you can see, above, brings the sexy in a dignified manner, and reflects a decent amount of diversity.  Adam as photographed by Jason Bell for Out Making the honor roll is my personal goddess, Cyndi Lauper, but most gays here are likely more excited by Adam Lambert.
