Janina Gavankar was born on November 29, 1980 in Joliet, Illinois, USA as Janina Zione Gavankar. She is an actress, known for True Blood (2008), The League (2009) and Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017).

Bollywood composer Rahul Dev Burman was best friends with Pete (Ganesh) Gavankar. Pete was the nephew of sound recordist Mangesh Desai. Pete is also the father of actress, singer Janina Gavankar and famous journalist Sonya Gavankar. They use to visit Pancham when ever they visited India and Pancham stayed with them in Chicago when he visited America.
In the early 2000's Janina traveled to India with her father and shot for the Bollywood film "Naam Mera Maria".(Aankhon Mein Sapne Liye) The film was directed by Nilu Gavankar who is Janina's paternal aunt. The film co starred Samraat Mukherjee, who is the cousin of Kajol. Samraat's father Ronu Mukherjee was best friends with Janina's father Pete Gavankar. the film was never released for unknown reasons. She described the experience as unusual as she could not speak or understand any Hindi.
Father Pete Gavankar and his family had a huge footprint in Hindi cinema. His maternal uncle Mangesh Desai was the most popular and accomplished sound recordist in Hindi cinema world. His childhood friends included Ronu Mukherjee (son of S. Mukherjee, father of Rani Mukherjee) and Bhisham Kohli (nephew of Dev Anand). Before moving to the US, Pete had also assisted in some of Filmstan's (S. Mukherjee's production banner) productions, including working on the sound stage for Dil Dekhe Dekho (debut of music composer Usha Khanna). Later in the 1970s, Pete headed to the US for his degree in engineering and eventually settled in Joliet, Illinois.
Her father Pete Gavankar produced Rahul Dev Burman's international album "Pantera" in 1986. Pete was the maternal nephew of Bollywood sound recordist Mangesh Desai.
