Fantastic Beasts Casts a Spell on Weekend Box Office with $75M

20 November 2016 10:16 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Warner Bros. brought their Harry Potter universe back to theaters this weekend with their first spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which was expected to dominate at the box office. This big screen adventure, which is set decades before Harry Potter stepped foot in Hogwarts, had no trouble taking the top spot, bringing in an impressive $75 million in its opening weekend. This magical adventure also scored big in international markets with $143.3 million, for a worldwide total of $218.3 million, from a whopping $180 million budget.

Box Office Mojo reports that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned an impressive $18,098 from 4,144 theaters in its opening weekend. That massive roll out is more than twice as much as the other newcomers that hit theaters this weekend, Open Road Films' Bleed For This (1,549 theaters) and Stx Entertainment's The Edge of Seventeen (1,945 theaters), neither of which managed to crack the top 5. Will Fantastic Beasts Demolish Doctor Strange at the Box Office?

15 November 2016 9:47 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After two straight weekend wins in theaters, Marvel's Doctor Strange is a hit, taking in nearly $500 million at the worldwide box office after just fourteen days in theaters. This weekend the Marvel Phase 3 adventure faces its biggest test yet, going up against Warner Bros.' highly-anticipated Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, along with Open Road Films' true story adaptation Bleed For This and Stx Entertainment's teen comedy The Edge of Seventeen. It should be no contest for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which could have a runaway victory with a whopping $72.5 million.

While $72.5 million is certainly a great opening by many standards, it would actually mark the "worst" opening in the Harry Potter franchise. As of now, the lowest opening weekend in the Harry Potter franchise is the $77.1 million earned by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007. Still, that tally »

Doctor Who: its villains' offscreen activities

Andrew Blair Sep 22, 2016

A salute to the unexplained story elements in Doctor Who, that leave us wondering who makes all the equipment for the Daleks?

Doctor Who raises many questions. What is the Doctor’s real name? What would he have said to Rose on that beach? And most important of all, who is it that designs hats for the Daleks?

Throughout the show’s history, right back to 1964’s The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, the Doctor’s greatest foe have demonstrated precisely cack-all aptitude for millinery. The Robomen in that story were humans converted into slaves and fitted with large helmet/neck-brace combos for mind-control purposes. By 1988’s Remembrance Of The Daleks they’d realised that putting a small chip behind Michael Sheard’s ear was much less conspicuous, but then in 2007’s Daleks In Manhattan/Evolution Of The Daleks they’ve decided hats aren’t enough and turn people into pig hybrids. »
