Everything That Needs to Happen in ‘Empire’ Season Two, Including a Beyonce Cameo

-Michael Arceneaux

Sadly, we have reached the end of Empire’s highly entertaining and historic first season. While I know what I’ll be doing in its seasonal break to at least try to fill the void in my life – talking to Black aunties at various fish fry spots in Harlem, men with Lucious Lyon styled conks on the street, and ignoring the people emailing me their mixtapes – I am already envisioning how I would like season two to go. It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday, which means I hope Fox decides go through with plans to bring the show back in the fall as opposed to making me wait until January 2016. I don’t feel like waiting that long. Here’s what needs to happen next season:

Film Review: ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water’

31 January 2015 4:38 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As far as nautical nonsense goes, it’s hard to top the climax of 2004’s “The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie,” in which the fate of our heroes hinged on the density of David Hasselhoff’s leg hair. This year’s follow-up, “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” may not quite equal those heights, but by doubling down on the Nickelodeon series’ inherent surreality, it proves just as memorable. Alternately inspired, exhausting, clever, stupid (not to mention stupid-clever), and about as meta as any kidpic this side of “Duck Amuck,” the Paul Tibbitt-directed feature ought to prove equally popular among the franchise’s key grade-schooler and head-shop-owner demographics.

Though the film’s marketing materials make the most of its characters’ expansion into three-dimensional CG, most of the first two acts take the more familiar form of Stephen Hillenburg’s TV toon, interspersed with live-action narration from an irritable pirate (Antonio Banderas »

Listen: Pharrell Resurrects N.E.R.D. For 'SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water'

Once upon a time, Pharrell Williams would produce songs for some of hip hop's biggest guns. These days, though, he seems to be writing new music exclusively for movies made for children. Last year he was responsible for the phenomenally ear-wormy "Happy," and this year he's been snuck into the Oscar race with a song for "Paddington." Today, too, comes word that Williams has resurrected his arty pop rock band N.E.R.D. (who had minor hits with "Lapdance" and "Everybody Nose") for the forthcoming "SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water." And it's pretty great (you can listen to it below via All Hip Hop).

Chad Hugo, Williams' partner in The Neptunes and N.E.R.D., talked to Variety about the new material (they're contributing two more songs: "Sandy Squirrel" and "Patrick Star"). "We're trying not to think too much in a cartoon sense," Hugo told Variety, "but more just like a psychedelic, »
