Top 10 Movie Trailers of 2012

31 December 2012 8:50 AM, PST | Movie Cultists | See recent Movie Cultists news »

Long before a film hits the big screen, movie trailers have already come along to whet our appetite and make us yearn for the release date to hurry up and get here… at least if they’re done right. These 10 are done right.

#10 The Grey

I’ll be honest and admit this trailer lands at the tail-end of the list, not because of the trailer, but because of the movie. Is that unfair? No more unfair than being lured in by an incredible trailer to watch a sucky movie. Liam Neeson using broken bottles as an improvised pair of brass knuckles? Who could resist that? Too bad the actual film didn’t even come close to measuring up. From the lame CGI wolves to the unfulfilling ending, this trailer more than any other reveals the downside to awesome movie previews.

#9 The Great Gatsby

Have I read The Great Gatsby? No, »

Best & Worst of 2012: 10 great and 5 not-so-great episodes

EW takes you through the 10 best and 5 worst television episodes of 2012. See them all below!

The Best

1. Game of Thrones, ”Blackwater” — May 27, HBO

Season 2′s climactic Battle of the Blackwater wins because HBO allowed producers
the time and cash to stage a massive land-and-sea confrontation. Thus, this was an episode of rousing heroism, chilling cowardice, gory action, and one giant green explosion that went ”Fooooom!” The most ingenious part? It made us care about the warriors on both sides. Staging that battle in viewers’ hearts was the episode’s most successful wartime victory of all. –James Hibberd

2. Homeland, ”New Car Smell”

Star Trek Into Darkness 'very much about hope, love, romance' - despite the title

29 December 2012 5:47 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Jj Abrams has hinted that the Star Trek sequel will have a happy ending, despite its sombre and ominous title.

The director recently joined stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pine in Tokyo to promote Star Trek Into Darkness.

According to the fansite Trekmovie, he gave a video interview in which he revealed: "I don't like going to the movies to feel bad. I don't like going to the movies to feel depressed and feel diminished. The reason you go to the movies is to feel bigger and stronger and happier.

"So this is a movie where they certainly go 'Into Darkness,' but I would be the wrong director if it was about characters staying there.

"This is very much a movie about hope, about love, about romance, and about facing something that is truly terrifying and finding a way through the connection of your family and surviving and being stronger afterwards. »

2012: a bumper year for homegrown TV

From Birdsong to The Hour, via Hunted and The Fear, British drama has had a great year. It's all down to these essential ingredients. Plus, Limmy's darkest bits

A spoonful of sugar

This was the year a heartwarming drama about slimy, crying heads bursting through cockney women's ha'pennies became a mainstream hit. Call The Midwife delighted many with its hearty mix of saccharine storylines and syphilitic ulcers. If you wanted one, you had to have the other. Meanwhile, Sky Arts wooed and repelled us in equal measure with John Hamm's beautiful face and piles of stinking gangrenous limbs in A Young Doctor's Notebook. An odd trend for a year in which we basically just wanted our TVs to give us a cuddle and tell us everything was going to be Ok.

The best TV episodes of 2012: 'Survivor: Philippines' revitalizes reality TV in 'Dead Man Walking'

28 December 2012 11:05 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

It is almost impossible to believe that "Survivor" just concluded its 25th season. Even more improbably, "Survivor: Philippines" was epic, destined to top all-time fan favorites lists for its engaging cast, roller-coaster twists and insane Tribal Councils.

"Dead Man Walking," the eighth episode, was the standout of an incredible season. The title refers to impossibly charismatic returning player Jonathan Penner's certain execution -- and the thrilling Immunity Challenge victory that spared his life in the game. Leading up to one of "Survivor's" most lively and astounding Tribal Councils, "Facts of Life" child star Lisa Whelchel transformed from America's Sweetheart to aggressive gamer. She betrays Malcolm first by revealing to Skupin and Pete that he found a Hidden Immunity Idol -- and then campaigning to blindside him next.

Party-boy Pete hilariously believes Malcolm's denials -- and boy is he in for a surprise at Tribal Council, where everyone is oversharing, »

This opening prologue gives us our first look at Benedict Cumberbatch's villain John Harrison, a man who promises to bring a sick child back to health. These dark moments quickly segue into a jaunty run through a bright red alien forest as Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and Bones (Karl Urban) attempt to deactivate a volcano on the verge of eruption. It's full of stirring adventure and space action, something the original Star Trek wasn't known for. It's quite thrilling.
