Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker Top Online Film Critics 2009 Nominations

31 December 2009 3:05 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds (François Duhamel / The Weinstein Co.) (top); Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (Jonathan Olley / Summit Entertainment) (bottom) The Online Film Critics Society has announced its list of nominees for 2009. Avatar may be a huge blockbuster-in-the-making, but Ofcs members apparently weren’t that impressed. James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure epic earned three nominations: best director, best cinematography (Mauro Fiore), and best editing (Steve R. Moore, John Refoua and Stephen Rivkin). Actually, that’s not bad at all, but … The Hurt Locker, with about $12 million in grosses at the domestic box office, received seven nominations, including best picture, best director (Kathryn Bigelow, Cameron’s former wife), best actor (Jeremy Renner), best supporting actor (Anthony Mackie), [...] »

'Basterds' for Best Picture? The Sound of 'Transformers' and the Awards Schedule

31 December 2009 10:40 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

It's been a nice week. Thanks to the lack of news I was able to focus on my top 25 movies of 2009, but it won't be slow for long.

This past Monday ballots for the 2010 Oscars were mailed to the 5,777 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and one day later ballots for the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards were sent out to nearly 100,000 actors. Oscar ballots must be returned to PricewaterhouseCoopers by 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 and SAG ballots are due two days earlier, by noon Pst on Thursday, January 21, 2010.

Speaking of ballots, Steve Pond at The Wrap posted a brain-bender of an article concerning the Oscar balloting system, which includes 11 different ballots in 11 different colors covering 15 of the 24 Oscar categories. He then proceeds to explain a couple of the peculiarities regarding each of them. It all sounded like a hot mess if you ask me. »

EW Fashion Police: The most disappointing red carpet looks of 2009

30 December 2009 2:54 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In a year that saw Taylor Swift shine in glittery frocks, Diane Kruger wow at the Inglourious Basterds premieres and Zoe Saldana strut in a cavalcade of gorgeous dresses for her Star Trek and Avatar promotional tours, 2009 was a memorable year for some of the red carpet's newest faces. But what about the all-stars? Sienna Miler and Sarah Jessica Parker are the ones I usually count on to make the premiere and award show carpets pop. Their impressive fashion choices usually land these women on the best-dressed lists, but this year, one too many underwhelmed me. Let's take a look »

Kruger: 'Acting makes me feel naked'

30 December 2009 1:29 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Diane Kruger has said that acting makes her feel naked. The Inglourious Basterds star, whose boyfriend is Dawson's Creek actor Joshua Jackson, said that she wishes people could see her soul as much in photographs as they do in her films. Kruger told The Guardian: "I don't feel photographers really want to see me. They want to see what's in style that month. I'd love to see a photo which captures what I'm about. "I wish people would see my soul in pictures. You see (more) »

The Flickcast Presents: Best Films Of 2009

29 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Rather than tell you what I think I should, I decided to come clean on this list. For instance, I am aware that A Serious Man might technically and artistically be a cut above some of these, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much. I’ll also preface this by saying since I was covering most of the main-stream movies this year, there were a lot of independent movies I didn’t see, so they may not appear on the list. The film title links to a review when applicable.

Up In The Air – Buoyed by a trio of fantastic actors, I found this movie to be utterly charming. Directed by Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno), the movie is touching, prescient, original, and funny. Vera Farmiga, George Clooney and Anna Kendrick all received Golden Globe acting nominations.  George Clooney’s depiction of a traveling man who »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

MTV Star Chung Voted Vogue's Style Queen 2009

23 December 2009 11:56 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

MTV chatshow host Alexa Chung has beaten supermodel Kate Moss and style icon Sarah Jessica Parker to the title of Vogue magazine's best dressed woman of 2009.

The British beauty, a former model, has caused a stir in the U.S. since moving Stateside to host her own talk show on the music channel - and is often invited to high-fashion events and runway shows.

And it seems Chung has taken some tips from her couture connections - fashion bible Vogue has listed her atop its most stylish females countdown.

The 26 year old was closely followed by French actress Audrey Tautou, and then Sex And The City star Parker.

U.K. TV talent show The X Factor has also made its mark on the fashion world, with judges Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue in at number four and five respectively.

Harry Potter starlet Emma Watson, a model for Burberry and Chanel, comes in at number six, while blondes Sienna Miller and Diane Kruger also made it into the top 10 along with Indian newcomer Freida Pinto. Formerly undisputed style queen Kate Moss is last on the list at number 10. »

Inglourious Basterds, George Clooney, Meryl Streep Win in Phoenix

23 December 2009 11:32 AM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds (François Duhamel / The Weinstein Co.) Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino’s violent World War II fantasy, was the Phoenix Film Critics Society’s best picture of 2009. (See full list below.) Tarantino was chosen best director, while the film’s cast, which includes Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, Diane Kruger, and Christoph Waltz, was cited as the year’s best ensemble cast. Although Inglourious Basterds has been mentioned before as best picture of the year (e.g., Toronto, tied with Steve McQueen’s Hunger), that particular category has been dominated by Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker and Jason Reitman’s socially conscious dramatic comedy Up in the Air. More predictable were the acting winners: George Clooney for Up in the Air, [...] »

Female Lead For ‘Green Lantern’ Down To Five Potentials

23 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Latino Review has an exclusive look at who might be Carol Ferris, the lucky lady that doesn’t get the ring from Ryan Reynold’s “Hal Jordan” in the upcoming Green Lantern film from DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.

Ferris has been described as “the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. She works for her dad’s company Ferris Air, got an Mba, and has a lifetime crush on Hal Jordan.” The website seems to believe that the role comes down to the following five actresses: Eva Green, Keri Russell, Diane Kruger, Blake Lively or Jennifer Garner.

Each of these actresses has had a taste of the action genre (if not a comic book film or two, in Garner’s case) except for Blake Lively. Being from the TV show Gossip Girl and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants films, she might be a good choice as there’s no »

Diane Can Multitask in Her Career and While Shopping

23 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Diane Kruger chatted away on her phone and looked fashionable while shopping in Beverly Hills on Monday. She got a little animated during her call as she toted around the fruits of her labors. Diane might have been picking up a last minute holiday gift for someone else, but she also has a lot of stores and showrooms in her future when award season arrives. Inglourious Basterds is scoring big with nominations including a best supporting actress Golden Globes nod for Diane herself. She's also the new spokeswoman for L'Oreal to finish off an amazing year. We just hope Joshua Jackson is ready to suit up and accompany Diane when those red carpets roll out. View 5 Photos › »

Geek Gossip: Hawkman, Green Lantern's Carol Ferris, Spider-Man 4, James Bond

Today's round-up has a distinct superhero (and action hero) motif.

Where there are upcoming films, there is gossip and speculation and the hero genre is no exception.

Sadly, so much turns out to be fiction and fabrication so I am warning readers now to switch on their bulls**t detector and set it to maximum as we head deep into Rumourville.

Only the other day, I brought you the 'story' about Taylor Swift (the singer whose awards acceptance speech was disrupted by Kanye West storming on stage) being a top choice to star in a new Supergirl movie.

The project was allegedly called Supergirl! The Love Story. This rumour originated on Hollyscoop, the site that previously scooped poop when it told us Miley Cyrus was going to be cast as Batgirl. Is the needle on your bulls**t detector twitching yet? It should be.

Okay, so on to today's gossip. »
