'Hatfields & McCoys' makes ratings history for History Channel

14 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The History Channel miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys" scored huge ratings Monday night (May 28), drawing the channel's biggest audience ever and one of the biggest in the history of cable TV.

Part one of the three-night miniseries, which chronicles the infamous 19th century feud between two families, drew 13.9 million viewers. That was the biggest audience of the night on all of television by a wide margin -- the closest competitor, "America's Got Talent" on NBC, averaged just over 10 million people.

The History channel also says that excluding sports, "Hatfields & McCoys" is also the most-watched single broadcast on ad-supported cable ever, which isn't quite true: A 1993 edition of "Larry King Live" featuring Al Gore and Ross Perot debating Nafta drew more than 16 million viewers. (A History rep says its figures date back to the channel's founding in 1996.)

The previous record for non-sports/non-news program on cable, incidentally, belonged to TNT's 2001 movie "Crossfire Trail, »

'Hatfields & McCoys' Tom Berenger: 'They are a bunch of hillbillies that went at each other'

28 May 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Deep in the woods outside of Bucharest, Romania, the sun sets early over bare trees. It's silent until galloping becomes audible, and Kevin Costner, looking perfectly natural, rides up on a large black horse.

The cast of History's "Hatfields & McCoys," a miniseries airing over three consecutive nights beginning Monday, May 28, races against the fading sunlight to shoot a scene.

A little later, as the makeup artist deftly removes a beard, which made Costner look old and grungy, he reflects on the historical feud that lured him to produce and star in his major foray into television.

"Anybody who goes through war is marked," Costner says of his character, Devil Anse, patriarch of the Hatfields. "Anybody who has killed is marked, or has seen somebody killed is marked. How do you ever truly recover? He went on to father children, create an entrepreneurial business."

"Like any man of war, he is »

'Hatfields & McCoys': 5 things to expect from History's miniseries

28 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Tonight, the miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton as the patriarchs at the center of the great American family feud, premieres on History (9 p.m. Et). Here’s what awaits you:

1. A bullet-riddled history lesson. Most people have heard of “the Hatfields and the McCoys,” but if you don’t know their story, this three-night event will fix that. The basics: The Hatfields are from West Virginia and the McCoys are from Kentucky, separated by the Tug Fork River. At least according to the miniseries, Devil Anse Hatfield (Costner) and Randall McCoy (Paxton) fought side-by-side in the »

History’S Biggest Family Feud: ‘Hatfields & McCoys’

25 May 2012 11:07 AM, PDT | Fox All Access | See recent Fox All Access news »

Miniseries used to be some of television’s biggest events, with “Shogun,” “Roots,” and “The Winds of War” commanding huge audiences in the ’70s and ’80s. While the miniseries has been largely absent from television for several years, “Hatfields & McCoys” is going to try to bring the form back in a big way.   “Hatfields & McCoys,” based on the legendary feud between two warring families, brings a real big-screen sensibility to the small screen. You’d even expect to see its stars in a theater instead of television: Academy Award winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves,” “The Bodyguard”) and Bill Paxton (“Titanic,” “Aliens”). We spoke to producer Leslie Greif who has produced written and directed films and many television shows and also produced The Hatfield-McCoys.   Producer Leslie Greif has produced, written, and directed theatrical films, and told us that yes, the goal was to make “Hatfields & McCoys” look like it belongs in a theater. »

Lindsay Pulsipher Previews Juliette-esque Role in Hatfields & McCoys

25 May 2012 8:23 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Lindsay Pulsipher plays a key role in the upcoming History Channel mini-series Hatfields & McCoys, but allow her to make one thing clear, for all those who know her best from her most recent role:

Roseanna McCoy is the "complete opposite of Crystal Norris," the actress told me over the phone, referring to her True Blood were-panther from season four of that HBO hit. "Roseanne is soft and sweet and innocent."

Still, that won't stop the character from getting involved in a pretty major scandal.

Hatfields & McCoys is based on the true story of two families that feuded after the Civil War. Its impressive cast is anchored by Kevin Costner as Devil Anse Hatfield and Bill Paxton as Randall McCoy.

Pulsipher portrays Roseanna, Randall's daughter and the love interest of Matt Barr's Johnse Hatfield (above).

Jackie K. Cooper: Hatfields & McCoys Puts the History Channel on the Map

24 May 2012 1:01 PM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

The History Channel puts itself on the great entertainment section of the cable map with the production of Hatfields & McCoys, a three part mini-series. Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton head the cast and both men give very balanced and nuanced portrayals. Directed by Kevin Reynolds, this mini-series is the best I have seen since the days of Lonesome Dove.

Sometimes mini-series are drawn out and suffer from the length taken, but not Hatfields & McCoys. This story needs the full range of all three nights to give a complete telling of what happened and why. Details are needed to fully present this story concerning the growth of the feud between the two families. It didn't happen overnight; the two patriarchs of their clans even started off as friends and fellow soldiers in the rebel cause.

Things begin to go wrong when "Devil" Hatfield (Costner) deserts the army and Randall McCoy (Paxton) knows of the desertion. »

Hatfields & McCoys TV Review – History

23 May 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Few stories in American history have such a strange dynamic of awareness and ignorance, and that fact alone gives Hatfields & McCoys the potential to set records for a mini-series that focuses on historic fact (as best they’re known). While virtually everyone knows about the dueling families, not many are truly familiar with all the details, or the seriousness of the feud’s escalation.

Beginning May 28th, History brings you a three-part event that takes you through the entire feud, from a time when the two patriarchs were friends, all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court’s intervention in the hostilities which had brought West Virginia and Kentucky to the brink of their own war.

As you might imagine (or at least, hope), being that the show is airing on History, the strength of the series comes from its commitment to accuracy. It’s hard to find fault »
