American Idol Top 3 Performance Recap: Baby, It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

31 March 2016 7:19 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

I shed a few tears during this week’s American Idol — for reasons both totally expected and somewhat surprising.

On the former front, let’s be like Randy Jackson and keep it really real, dawg (Omg, I already regret typing all of those words): The Hometown Visits episode is like the world’s most potent onion. Once you cut into it, everything’s over but the weeping, the snuffling and the slightly embarrassed dabbing of one’s eyes with half a box of tissues.

Reality Check: Who Deserves to Win Idol — And Who Should Be Bottom 2? Plus: The Magic of Adam Lambert!

We’re down to five contestants on American Idol‘s farewell season, but regardless of how the next three weeks play out, there’s only one contestant who’s proven worthy of a key to the House That Allison Iraheta Gorgeously Graffitied.

On this week’s episode of Reality Check, my co-host Melinda Doolittle and I break down the most recent performances from the remaining vocalists, call attention to the massive improvement in the second half of last Thursday’s episode — and theorize the reasons why »

American Idol Recap: Yep, They Just Made America Grate Again

17 March 2016 7:21 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

Dear America,

We need to talk.

No, I’m not moving to Canada if Screamy McOrangeFace wins the presidency — I can’t live in a world where I have to wait three or four days to watch my programs, and let’s not forget the importance of doing our civic duty in the midterm elections in 2018.

But my fellow residents of the U.S., you didn’t just drop the ball with this week’s American Idol, you took an anvil, slammed it through the roof and all the way down into the basement.

Reality Check: Is Idol Turning Into the La'Porsha-Trent Show? Plus: Dalton's Rapid Decline! More Voice Standouts!

What we’d like to do is go back — just a mere week or two ago — to when Avalon Young was still “in it to win it”* on American Idol‘s Farewell Season. (*Tm Randy Jackson)

Except, of course, we can’t. And on this week’s episode of Reality Check, my co-host Melinda Doolittle and I are forced to mourn the elimination of an easy, breezy vocalist who most definitely deserved a Top 4 finish (at worst).

[Insert all the sad emojis here.]

In the meantime, Melinda and I wonder about whether – with four weeks left ’til the closure of »

American Idol Top 8 Performance Recap: Girl, You Earned It

3 March 2016 7:16 PM, PST | | See recent news »

I’m not going to kvetch about American Idol failing to reward one of its dozens of worthy grads with a Thursday-night performance slot — there are only six weeks left, after all! — and instead using it to promote the doing-just-fine-already former X Factor judge Demi Lovato

I won’t complain that the show’s producers learned nothing from last season — and have once again returned to a format where current contestants spend two hours waiting with nervous anticipation to find out which of ’em are at risk of elimination, »

American Idol Semifinals (Week 2) Recap: What Are They Listening To?

17 February 2016 6:40 PM, PST | | See recent news »

One of the great mysteries of American Idol‘s farewell season is its failure to snag Red Bull as a sponsor for its semifinal rounds.

There’s been a “blinked? you missed it!” Usain Bolt-ish pacing to these telecasts, in which a dozen performances and 36 individual critiques — plus some pithy “meet the contestants!” packages — get crammed into approximately 42 minutes of airtime.

American Idol: Kelly Clarkson to Return — Simon Cowell, Maybe Not

15 January 2016 12:11 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Your very first American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, will be a part of the reality competition’s farewell run.

Clarkson will serve as a guest judge and perform in February’s first live telecast, executive producer Trish Kinane shared on Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. That likely will be the limit of the pregnant singer’s involvement, given her upcoming due date.

Some other Idol winners will participate in duets with finalists during the middle rounds, Kinane added.

Cher, Kanye West, Madonna, Ricky Gervais and More Stars Lead Tributes to David Bowie on Twitter

10 January 2016 10:45 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Celebrities including Cher, Kanye West, Madonna and Ricky Gervais have led tributes to music legend David Bowie following the news that he has had died at 69 after a battle with cancer. While Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais said he had "just lost a hero. Rip David Bowie." Songwriter Linda Perry tweeted: "Oh this is terrible news. American Idol Recap: Rolling in the Deeee-eeeep Bench

7 January 2016 7:21 PM, PST | | See recent news »

American Idol promised to bring the special guests for its farewell season, and on Thursday’s audition episode, the Holy Ghost himself came down from heaven, inhabited the soul of a single mother named La’Porsha Renae, and delivered a rendition of Radiohead’s “Creep” so explosive that Kim Jong-un was like, “Ok, girl, I surrender.”
