8 February 2016 11:35 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

An eighth Saw movie is in the works. According to reports, Lionsgate has hired writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger (Sorority RowPiranha 3D and Piranha 3Dd) to pen the new film. It isn;t known if it will be a sequel or reboot, but the word around Hollywood is that it will be called Saw: Legacy.

The Saw movies have been hugely popular since the first film arrived back in 2004. The film and its six sequels have grossed a total of $870 million at the global box-office – all from relatively low budgets.

The story revolves around the character of Jigsaw, a clearly disturbed individual who sets traps and elaborate games for his victims. Over the years, the films have become known for their huge twists as each film climaxes.

Leigh Whannell and James Wan were the driving force behind the original movie, and have been involved in all of the films since. »

It's unclear whether it'll be a reboot or sequel but a new Saw film - Saw: Legacy - is in the works...

It was always going to be a question of when not if with regards the resurrection of the Saw movie franchise. The seven films to date have been hugely profitable, even if interest in them was dwindling by the time we got to the seventh, Saw 3D.

Lionsgate's own fortunes in many ways were transformed by the success of Saw, and now the studio is set to resurrect the series. Saw 8 will go by the title of Saw: Legacy, and it's hired Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger - who penned the recent Piranha films and Sorority Row - to put together a screenplay for the new Saw film.

Original Saw director James Wan, and scribe Leigh Whannell, are on board as executive producers. »

Jigsaw is coming back to life once again, with Lionsgate moving forward on the eighth installment of their blockbuster Saw franchise. The Tracking Board reports that the studio has hired Piranha 3D writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger to come aboard and write the script for this new movie, entitled Saw Legacy. No story details were given at this time, and it isn't known if Tobin Bell will be back to play the notorious killer Jigsaw.

James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who came up with the original Saw story, are set to executive produce this sequel. We reported back in 2013 that Lionsgate was developing this Saw sequel, but that report claimed the studio wanted to take its time and develop the perfect story. Lionsgate reportedly considered rebooting the franchise altogether, but it is not known if this new project will be a continuation of Jigsaw's story or not.
