New York Television Festival Receives Record High Submissions

11 July 2016 2:00 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

2016 has been a banner year for the New York Television Festival. The Duplass Brothers-produced “Animals” pilot, which won Best Comedy at the festival in 2013, landed a two-season deal over at HBO. Multi-year alums of the festival Tory Stanton and Scott McCabe wrote a pilot called “No Tomorrow” that will score a premiere on The CW this fall. And that’s just the start.

Deadlines have passed for this year’s annual Independent Pilot Competition (Ipc) and the festival’s inaugural Nytvf Scripts competition. The statistics show interest in independent television — at least as far as it crosses into the festival — is hotter than ever.

Exclusive: Dave Franco discusses The Room movie The Masterpiece

4 July 2016 2:38 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During an interview with Flickering Myth’s Scott Davis to promote the release of Now You See Me 2, actor Dave Franco offered up some comments on The Masterpiece (formerly titled The Disaster Artist), James Franco’s upcoming retelling of the making of the cult classic The Room.

“We’re still shocked that anyone let us make this movie based on The Room,” states Franco. “I saw a cut of it recently and I’m very hard on myself, but it turned out good. It really did. It’s a tough tone to pull off, it’s comedic but it’s also very tragic, and you want to do the whole story justice, you want to do these characters justice. You don’t want to poke fun at them, you want to play it straight, and my brother who plays Tommy Wiseau could win many, many awards for this.”

Jane Fonda on ‘Grace and Frankie’: TV Acting Is ‘An Entirely Different Animal’

2 May 2016 6:28 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The stars of Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie” celebrated new beginnings at its season two premiere Sunday afternoon with a screening at the Harmony Gold Theatre in West Hollywood.

The two episodes screened included the show’s usual mix of comedy and pathos. The series picks up moments after the end of season one as Sol (Sam Waterston) is returning home to Robert (Martin Sheen) after having sex with ex-wife Frankie (Lily Tomlin). No spoilers here, but as in life, a curveball is thrown that interrupts the main characters’ best laid plans.

Tomlin said she and longtime friend and costar Jane Fonda have gotten along famously for more than 35 years — without having “too many quarrels.”

Fonda, best known for her film roles, described television acting as foreign territory for her.

“Episodic TV is an entirely different animal: being in every episode, working very long hours, not entirely knowing the arc of the entire season, »

Will Ferrell to Play Ronald Reagan in New Comedy

27 April 2016 8:44 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After spending years imitating President George W. Bush on Saturday Night Live and on Broadway, Will Ferrell will be taking on another President. The actor has signed on to star in and produce Reagan, where he'll play U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The script by Mike Rosolio landed on The Black List last year as one of the best unproduced screenplays.

The story is described as a "hilarious political satire" by Variety, following Ronald Reagan as he falls into dementia at the start of his second term, when an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander in chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie. The script got so much buzz on The Black List that the company put on a live reading in Hollywood last month, with James Brolin reading the title role. The rest of the cast for that one-night-only live read included John Cho, »

[Tribeca Review] Nerdland

22 April 2016 7:29 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Providing an escape valve for Andrew Kevin Walker, known for far more serious films about would-be serial killers (8Mm, Seven), Nerdland is an almost biting commentary on Hollywood that would appear to be more at home on the small screen (had it not been crudely drawn for Cinemascope).

The animation chronicles  the adventures of two deranged dudes, John (voiced by Paul Rudd), a freelance writer for Concessioner Monthly, a trade magazine for movie exhibitors, and Elliot (Patton Oswalt), a budding screenwriter who finds time between videos games and nothing else to write a D-grade flick with gratuitous T & A. If the picture sounds bleak already, don’t worry it gets worse, even if it does come with a warning: the song that plays in the title sequence tells us to “get our hopes up.”

A parody of low-level Hollywood and the quest for instant stardom forces John and Elliot to »

18 April 2016 9:22 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Of all the many, many projects cramming up James Franco’s bustling slate, The Masterpiece has our vote for the most tantalizing pick of the bunch. Having wrapped production earlier this year, we now have our first official peek at the cast in costume.

Billed as a true-life depiction of the creation process behind Tommy Wiseau’s cult drama The Room, the biopic formerly known as The Disaster Artist has pulled together a star-studded ensemble as Franco et al. look to shed light on the romantic drama first released in 2003.

Derided and celebrated almost in equal measure, The Room was written, directed and produced by Wiseau – who will also have a cameo appearance in Franco’s feature film – and that troubled production was chronicled in Greg Sestero’s nonfiction novel, The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room. Indeed, that book will act as the primary source of inspiration »
