He appeared on the cover of the first issue of "Sports Illustrated".
Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the BBWAA in 1978.
Mathews was the only player to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta.
Played primarily third base for the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1952- 1966), Houston Astros (1967) and Detroit Tigers (1967-1968).
Set the major league record for most homeruns (47) for a third baseman in 1953 (since broken by Hall of Famer slugger Mike Schmidt in 1980).
The greatest all-around third baseman of the fifties.
