Monster-Movie Mayhem: ‘Mega Shark in Malibu’ Review

Stars: Peta Wilson, Warren Christie, Chelan Simmons, Sonya Salomaa | Written by Lindsay James | Directed by David Lister

Lets face it: you already know whether youre going to like this movie or not from the title alone, right? The Asylum Mega- franchise has garnered itself a fair number of fans over the past few years, with high-brow classics such as Mega Piranha and last years super-popular Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus doing the business for Syfy’s viewership by providing an ultra-cheap form of entertainment enjoyed more for its laughable acting and special effects than its stellar writing or innovative filmmaking.

The plot comes straight out of Piranha, with once-thought-extinct goblin sharks emerging from cracks left in the ocean floor after a number of earthquakes, resulting in a flash tsunami that covers the west coast of America with high water, including the titular Malibu. The film follows two groups of people

‘Felicity’ Alum Amy Jo Johnson Spins Tumultuous Childhood Into First Feature Film

‘Felicity’ Alum Amy Jo Johnson Spins Tumultuous Childhood Into First Feature Film
“We have to figure out how to laugh our way through life,” says Amy Jo Johnson. The actress, best-known for her roles on “Felicity,” “Power Rangers,” and the CBS crime drama “Flashpoint,” hasn’t always had it easy. “My mom died of cancer. I grew up in a religious cult. There have been heavy issues in my personal life. Getting through them, I’ve always tried to find the levity.”

As a newly minted filmmaker, Johnson brings this same approach to her first feature film, “The Space Between,” which she stars in, wrote, directed, and produced. The film, which was partially funded through an Indiegogo campaign, will screen Oct. 19, the opening night of the Carmel Intl. Film Festival.

It’s a full circle moment for Johnson, whose short film “Lines” appeared at the festival in 2014.

A dramatic comedy about a father who discovers that his newborn child is not biologically his own,

When Dwayne witnesses an awful crime, he tries to leverage a bad situation into a scheme to get rich quickly but he finds that fate and an unruly accomplice are working against him. Thrust into the middle of a police investigation spearheaded by the local sheriff (John Malkovich), everything goes from bad to worse in this all-American thriller.

Viff Preview Round-up of Films, Parties, Zombies, Rockers and Hockey

The Vancouver International Film Festival kicks off in earnest tonight after a few days of panels Vancouver Film and Television Forums. The fest certainly doesn’t have the high profile of Toronto International Film Festival or Festival Du Cannes to be sure but its a growing fest in a beautiful city so who’s complaining.

Whether you are in Vancouver or following along at home, here is a menu of resources to peruse and enjoy (unless of course you are instead watching the Canucks hockey season kick-off tonight instead with the rest of Vancouver except for the people at the Whitecaps vs. Timbers soccer playoffs).

Westender’s Precious Spector

Vancouver’s WestEnder arts and culture magazine provides Movies: Top picks for this year’s Viff.

We tag ‘The Agony and The Ecstasy of Phil Spector‘ saying, “He is, of course, a convicted murderer and the proud owner of many ridiculous wigs.

Malibu Shark Attack swims in

  • Fangoria
Fango spoke to longtime New Zealand producer Dale Bradley, who tackled his first job in Australia with Malibu Shark Attack, a killer-fish film that lensed in Queensland under the title Goblin Shark Attack and premieres on the Sci Fi Channel (which co-produced the movie, and is soon to be known as Syfy) this summer. Bradley passed on a couple of production pics (see them below), and explains the flick’s odd original moniker.

The onscreen predators “are based on a species called goblin sharks [see art at bottom], which don’t look like your normal great white,” Bradley tells us. “They’re very fearsome-looking creatures. Ours are actually larger than the real thing, but modeled on them for the look that the CG company created. People do catch these things, but ours are monsters that get released from a big underground cavern during a seaquake. The resulting tsunami washes them ashore. Not only do
