The Montreal World Film Festival announced its full slate of 432 films from around the globe on Tuesday, including 113 world or international feature preems. From the U.S. “The Red Robin” by Michael Z. Wechsler competes in the World section while Adam Rodgers’ “At Middleton” will unspool in the First World competition and Sam Fleischner’s “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors” plays in Focus on World Cinema.

This year’s world competition features 20 features and 11 shorts from 18 different countries. In all there are 113 world premieres, 39 North American preems and 41 Canadian bows.

Twenty helmers will screen their pics in a separate competition for first-time feature filmmakers. Organizers of the sprocket opera attribute the maelstrom of fresh talent to the industry’s digital evolution. Not a single 35 mm print was submitted for competition, and the increasing popularity of digital submissions invited more low-budget productions to toss their hat in the ring.

Comic Book Review - American Vampire Vol. 5

9 May 2013 9:52 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Robb Ghag reviews American Vampire Vol. 5...

"In this new American Vampire collection, Skinner Sweet, Pearl and company return to Hollywood in the ‘50s during the Red Scare. In a time when America was on the lookout for the next Communist threat, was the real danger far more insidious? Plus: Retired vampire hunter Felicia Book gets called back into action to kill the most powerful vampire of all time."

This is the book that closes the chapter on some of the characters that Scott Snyder has made come to life (or afterlife).  If you’re a fan of American Vampire then you will find yourself in familiar surroundings as Agent Hobbes and a makeshift group of “heroes” take on the father of all vampires: Dracula.

Starting in England in 1954 we quickly learn the history of the Vassals of the Morning Star.  We’re reconnected with Felicia and Gus, who Hobbes convincingly gets to join their cause. »

Rob Ryan fired: Cowboys defensive coordinator tells Espn he'll be out of work 'five minutes'

9 January 2013 12:31 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

The Dallas Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan one day after running backs coach Skip Peete was also let go, Espn reports.

According to coach Jason Garrett, in a statement, "At this time, the decision has been made to move forward in a different direction philosophically on defense."

For a guy who was also fired from the same job in Cleveland two years ago, Ryan seems oddly confident that he will find a place on another team, saying, "I'll be out of work for like 5 minutes." Speaking with the Dallas Morning Star, he elaborated on that saying, "I have no hard feelings. But it doesn't matter if I coach here or not.  I will find another spot," before adding, "I'm too damn good."

Maybe he can find a place with his twin brother, Rex Ryan, on the NY Jets coaching staff. »
