Kenneth Branagh Photos: 2011 Hollywood International Star of the Year

31 December 2011 11:00 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Hollywoodnews.com: A lot is being made this awards season of George Clooney’s versatility in front of and behind the camera, as the “Ides of March” director finds himself in the Oscar race for his performance as a bewildered father in Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants.”

And it’s true that Clooney is enjoying a productive 2011. But Kenneth Branagh has performed a similar feat this year. Click here to read interview with Kenneth

Consider this. Earlier this year, Branagh kicked off the Summer 2011 season with his Shakespeare-by-way-of-Marvel-comics blockbuster, “Thor.” The smash hit earned a whopping $449 million at the worldwide box office, establishing Chris Hemsworth as a bankable star while also setting the stage for “Captain America” and, later, Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers.” It was a coup for Branagh, but he wasn’t finished yet.

Has toy manufacturer Neca accidentally Spoiled Joss Whedon’s second villain in The Avengers?

The film features the characters of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and lead villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston). However, the industry has long expected that there would be a second villain in the film.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

This week, Neca released the product description for its 2012 HeroClix lineup based on The Avengers movie. And, apparently, Loki isn’t the only villain getting a toy made for the movie. The Red Skull reared his vile head on the Neca release. The character, played by Hugo Weaving, appeared in 2011′s Captain America: The First Avenger (aka The Avengers prequel).

The release stated the following: “Charging »

'Iron Man 3' Rumor: Robert Downey Jr. Getting Lifts?

30 December 2011 6:00 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Filed under: Movie News, Celebrity Gossip

The Iron Man suit might be getting an upgrade: Heels! According to Us Weekly (via the New York Post), Robert Downey Jr. is adding lifts for 'Iron Man 3.' "They're working on a special pair just for him," a source told the celeb magazine, and that the lifts would be concealed in boots. Why in the next Iron Man movie and not 'The Avengers?' At 5'8", the actor certainly isn't the tallest in the 'Avengers' cast. That would be mighty Thor, Chris Hemsworth, at 6'3", as we've seen in shots of the actors on the set. At least Downey appears to be taller than Mark Ruffalo, who is also reportedly 5'8".

Week in geek's best films of 2011

30 December 2011 5:25 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Drive, Source Code and Thor were among the highlights of a year notable for the increasing quality of fanboy-friendly films

Quite a few critics' best-of lists have implied 2011 was a pretty average year for popcorn movies. Throw in the fact that 2012 is set to deliver The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus and the first part of The Hobbit, and it doesn't augur well for an annual round-up of the past 12 months' top fanboy-friendly films. But while there has been nothing this year to compare with the head-spinning brio of 2010's Inception or the epic, flawed genius of 2009's Watchmen, the overall quality of fantasy, sci-fi and comic book fare has definitely been on the way up.

That's not to say we haven't had our fair share of distinctly non-festive turkeys. Green Lantern was an almighty mess dogged by a ropey script, dodgy CGI, and wooden chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and just about everyone else on screen. »
