‘Power’ Finale Sets All-Time Ratings Records for Starz

21 August 2015 9:47 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Starz drama “Power” wrapped its second season in strong fashion last Saturday, and has become the 21-year-old premium cable network’s most popular original series on record.

The drama, which stars Omari Hardwick as a New York City nightclub owner who doubles as a drug kingpin to an elite clientele, drew 2.39 million viewers in Nielsen’s “live plus-3” estimates, which includes both same-night viewership (1.54 million) and time-shifted playback done over the next three days (850,000). This was up 51% vs. the show’s first-season finale last year (1.59 million) and broke the network’s “live plus-3” record set the previous week when “Power” averaged 2.29 million.

Prior to this season’s final two episodes of “Power,” the most-watched episode of a Starz original series had been 3.88 million for the wedding episode of “Outlander” last September.

When quickie encores are included in its total, “Power” drew 4.42 million gross viewers over the weekend, also a network »

Weekly Ratings: ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ ‘Power’ Exit Summer Strong; NBC Reality Rules

19 August 2015 6:01 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This has not been a good summer in the ratings for scripted programming — viewership for nearly all returning shows are down versus last year and cable has been hit particularly hard — but there were a few cable standouts last week.

The big “A” reveal on the summer finale of ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” delivered the show’s best rating in both adults 18-49 (1.4) and adults 18-34 (2.1) in nearly two years and its largest overall audience (3.09 million) in 18 months, according to Nielsen “live plus same-day” estimates. The 18-49 rating was also the best for any ad-supported scripted program this summer, and the 18-34 score was the best for any scripted series since the season finale of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” in May.

(And on the social media front, “Liars” had another monster showing: With 1.6 million Tweets, Tuesday’s hour ranks as the No. 3 most popular cable TV series episode on record. »

7 August 2015 7:30 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

The final two episodes of Power‘s second season are titled “Time’s Up” and “Ghost Is Dead” — and if you need any more indication that James “Ghost” St. Patrick’s life is about to explode, allow co-creator Courtney Kemp Agboh to educate you.

“The central problem for Ghost is that he wants to be good… but he’s not really a good guy,” Kemp Agboh says, laughing. “I don’t want to say that he’s not good on the inside, because I think he is good on the inside.”

But that goodness is likely to get lost in »

The success of the show has drawn comparisons to Fox’s “Empire,” fueled in part by “Power” producer 50 Cent’s own social media postings. So is there a real feud or is. »

With Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lake Bell and Jon Bernthal already cast, action drama Shot Caller is continuing to round out its roster. Latest to sign up is Matt Gerald, lately perhaps best known as Daredevil's Melvin Potter. The movie finds Coster-Waldau as a gangster freshly released from the slammer who is “encouraged” (read: ordered) to pull off a major, violent crime with a rival gang on the streets of Southern California. Gerald's role is that of a parole officer with a grudge against some particular gang members. The director is Snitch’s Ric Roman Waugh, who also wrote the screenplay. Power: 50 Cent and Joseph Sikora Talk Cover-Up Businesses and Parking Tickets

21 June 2015 7:15 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There are big changes coming for Ghost (Omari Hardwick) and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) in Power Season 2 now that Kanan (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) is out of prison. Originally, the drug operation belonged to Kanan but when he went to jail, Ghost and Tommy took over and essentially made it a booming business without him. Now Kanan is out and he wants to take everything for himself. Just before the start of Season 2, I got the opportunity to sit down with Jackson and Sikora to discuss what’s to come for their characters, how they prepared to dig into Ghost, Tommy and Kanan’s past together, how Tommy’s been driving around New York City without receiving a single parking ticket and more. Power: Courtney Kemp Agboh on the Possibility of a Ghost and Tommy Flashback

19 June 2015 7:26 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Just like with Season 1, it only took one episode of Season 2 to earn Power a third season. The show centers on Omari Hardwick’s Ghost, a big time New York drug dealer who opens up a nightclub called Truth to clean the money. Soon after the first episode of the second season broke records and pulled in 1.43 million viewers with its 9pm broadcast, Starz pulled the trigger on Season 3, and series creator and executive producer Courtney Kemp Agboh is definitely ready for the opportunity. While promoting the start of Season 2, Agboh told me why she needed to have a sense of where the story is going for five seasons and teased a bunch of curious details about what’s to come this season including the addition of a pet, the possibility of a Ghost and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) flashback, and more. Power Interview: Naturi Naughton Talks Tasha’s Relationship with Sean, Holly and More

Tasha’s (Naturi Naughton) whole world started to crumble in Power Season 1. She’s been living the good life with her kids and husband James 'Ghost' St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), enjoying the cashflow of his booming drug operation, but when he expresses interest in getting out and going legit via his nightclub Truth, she isn’t happy about it. On top of that, Ghost is also busy cheating on her with his old flame, Angela (Lela Loren). Tasha still loves Ghost dearly, but the time has come for her to start preparing for the worst. While promoting Power Season 2, I got the opportunity to sit down with Naughton to discuss what’s coming up for Tasha, why you can count on her to get a good read on Tommy’s (Joseph Sikora) girlfriend Holly (Lucy Walters), her experience with fans regarding the team Tasha vs. team Angela debate, and more. »

Starz’s Power is packed with highly engaging characters with loads of curious qualities and motives to consider, but this interview veered a bit off track courtesy of one brilliant answer from Lela Loren. If you caught the cover-up business supercut you know where this is going, but the full conversation regarding her cover-up business of choice is still well worth watching. Plus, Loren and Omari Hardwick do drop a few solid teases about what’s to come in the show’s second season. Hear all about Loren’s cat cover-up operation, why Ghost (Hardwick) chose to open up a nightclub of all businesses, the possibility of a pet joining the show and more in the full interview below.
