The plot is set in the summer of 1999, in the tiny West Texas town of Tulia, where 39 people — almost all of them black — were arrested and charged with dealing powdered cocaine.

But the federally funded investigation was based on the work of one notoriously unreliable undercover officer: Tom Coleman. Despite the flimsiness of the evidence against them, virtually all the defendants were convicted and given sentences as »

Newswire: Germans love David Hasselhoff cameos

11 July 2017 6:05 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Though the Baywatch movie ended up dead in the water here in the States, that feature-length compilation of hard bodies in slow motion has gained some traction abroad. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Seth Gordon’s film hit the $12 million mark in the U.K., but that number was trounced by the box-office take in Germany, which is up to $16 million. It was the best showing of any foreign market for the film, and helped nudge its total international box-office past $100 million.

Dwayne Johnson’s appeal can certainly be credited for the film’s strong performance in Germany, but it’s the original Mitch that really drives them wild in Hamburg (or whatever German city you prefer). David Hasselhoff, who originated the role of the lifeguard on TV, only has a small part in the film adaptation as “The Mentor,” but it was enough to bring moviegoers »

Bo Report: Indie releases continue to struggle while 'Despicable Me 3' wins

2 July 2017 6:05 PM, PDT | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Lady MacBeth..

With school students on holiday around the country, it was no surprise to see Despicable Me 3 seize the top spot at Australian cinemas last weekend, while Transformers: The Last Knight nosedived.

The House, notionally a comedy starring Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell as a couple who persuade a friend to set up a casino in his half-empty mansion so they can send their daughter to college, failed dismally, mirroring the Us debut.

Lady MacBeth and Monsieur Chocolat struggled on debut despite glowing reviews, continuing a generally grim run for independent releases this year.

Transmission.s Lion, eOne.s La La Land (with a lot of help from its six Oscars) and A Dog.s Purpose have been among the handful of indie break-outs.

Wild, Dangerous, Imperfect, Wounded Grandeur: 18 Double Features About America

2 July 2017 9:02 AM, PDT | Trailers from Hell | See recent Trailers from Hell news »

The United States is “my country, right or wrong,” of course, and I consider myself a patriotic person, but I’ve never felt that patriotism meant blind fealty to the idea of America’s rightful dominance over global politics or culture, and certainly not to its alleged preferred status on God’s short list of favored nations, or that allegiance to said country was a license to justify or rationalize every instance of misguided, foolish, narrow-minded domestic or foreign policy.

In 2012, when this piece was first posted, it seemed like a good moment to throw the country’s history and contradictions into some sort of quick relief, and the most expedient way of doing that for me was to look at the way the United States (and the philosophies at its core) were reflected in the movies, and not just the ones which approached the country head-on as a subject. »

Bo Report: The latest 'Transformers' again shows a tiring with franchises

25 June 2017 7:30 PM, PDT | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

'Transformers: The Last Knight'..

Moviegoers in Australia and internationally increasingly are showing signs of fatigue with the never-ending procession of Hollywood franchises.

The latest examples: The underwhelming debuts of the fifth film in the Transformers series and the third edition of Cars.

That coupled with the fast-sinking Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and The Mummy reboot indicates studios should spend more money on original content and less on tiring franchises.

The top 20 titles collectively minted $17 million last weekend, down 5 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero..

Of the new independent releases, A Quiet Passion and Hindi drama Tubelight registered well while Una was Ok and McLaren tanked.

Paramount.s Transformers: The Last Knight rang up $4.46 million from 285 locations and $4.7 million with previews. That.s way down on the $8.8 million debut of Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014, which finished up with $26.9 million.
