Grandson of former real-estate and banking magnate Stephen Shalom, who produced Broadway plays, and later their feature adaptations, including "A Raisin in the Sun" (1961) starring Sidney Poitier, and "The Owl and the Pussycat" (1970) starring Barbra Streisand. Shalom also executive produced "One Potato, Two Potato" (1964), a landmark film about interracial marriage in the 1960s, and the Sophia Loren drama "Judith" (1966).
