Nia Vardalos wrote the script for the follow-up, which centers on a new wedding that brings this big family together again, along with the revelation of a family secret. The writer will return to play Toula Portakalos, with John Corbett returning as her husband Ian. The original 2002 comedy, which followed Toula's marriage to the non-Greek Ian, earned more than $241 million at the domestic box office, making it one of the most successful indie films of all time.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who produced the original My Big Fat Greek Wedding, are returning to produce the follow-up through their Playtone Pictures company, alongside Gary Goetzman. Nia Vardalos will serve as executive producer, alongside Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt and Steve Shareshian.
