Exclusive: Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza And Luke Wilson Talk About Love In Clip From 'Playing It Cool'

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Chris Evans is currently embodying the noble hero in his role as Captain America in "Avengers: Age Of Ultron." But in the upcoming romantic comedy "Playing It Cool," he plays something a little more relatable to many people: a regular young guy who has given up on love… until he meets that one special person. Joined by Aubrey Plaza, Luke Wilson, Martin Starr and Topher Grace, the film tells the story of a screenwriter tasked with writing a rom-com, but who has trouble finding a way in due to his own views on love. But that all changes when he meets a woman (played by Michelle Monaghan) at a party, but there's a problem: he never got her name. And in this exclusive clip, Evans tells his circle of pals about the person that has suddenly left him smitten, and which leads to a roundtable discussion on the nature of love. »

In Playing It Cool, Chris Evans Proves He's Hollywood's Most Charming Leading Man

16 hours ago | Village Voice | See recent Village Voice news »

Rom-com formula is given an exuberant meta-kitchen-sink overhaul in Playing It Cool, about a screenwriter (Chris Evans) who doesn't believe in love, which proves troublesome when he's hired to write a romantic-comedy script — and then meets a philanthropic woman (Michelle Monaghan) who rocks his world. Self-consciously referring to itself at every turn, Justin Reardon's film is awash in narration, flashbacks, animated vignettes, costume-heavy fantasy sequences, dance numbers, camera tricks, CG effects, graphical text, narrative leaps in time and location, and all manner of other clichéd devices, including Evans's ribald banter with his weird-but-cool best friends. Fortunately, those sidekicks are played by a host of uniformly funny supporting »

Chris Columbus Talks Pixels, the Gremlins Reboot, and The Goonies Sequel

27 April 2015 3:52 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

One of the movies I’m most looking forward to this summer is an Adam Sandler film. You read that right. I said Adam Sandler. While I’ll be the first one to admit his track record has some blemishes, I don’t think Pixels is going to be one of them. In fact, I think Pixels is going to surprise everyone when it turns out to be a lot of fun. If you’re not familiar with the film, it’s helmed by Chris Columbus and revolves around a group of 80's gaming champions who are called upon to defend Earth from alien invaders who have misinterpreted our classic arcade games as a declaration of war. Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, Josh GadKevin James, and Brian Cox round out the cast. As a huge fan of 80s arcade games like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Centipede, I can »

Chris Columbus talks Gremlins reboot, Joe Dante will not be involved

27 April 2015 3:38 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With his first film for five years, Pixels, due for release in the next few months, director Chris Columbus has started doing the press rounds to promote the CGI-action spectacular starring Adam Sandler (Grown Ups 2), Kevin James (Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). But while the emphasis was on his latest project, SlashFilm asked the director about one of his most famous porject, 1984’s Gremlins, and the status of the long-talked about remake/reboot.

On the new version, Columbus told the site: “I am involved. Initially I remember back in ’84-’85 when they approached me and said, do you wanna write the sequel and I said, this is before the obsession with franchises. So my feeling was no. We’ve told the story, that was that’s 1980’s thinking. And then suddenly all these years later, we were approached with »

From Actor to "Action!", Exploring the Debuts of 19 Actors-Turned-Directors

21 April 2015 10:30 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Over the course of film history, we've seen plenty of long-time actors step behind the camera to take up their directorial ambitions. Clint Eastwood did it. Mel Gibson did it. George Clooney did it. What do these three have in commonc Well, for starters, they are all men, so there's that. Further, they are all white, but more on that later. More to the point of the article, these men all eased into their directorial careers by starring in their respective debuts, using their presence on screen to help market their talents off it. And with his feature directorial effort The Water Diviner, which hits limited theaters this week, Russell Crowe is just the most recent addition to a growing list of actors who have decided to try their hand behind the camera. Like Eastwood, Gibson, and Clooney before him, the Best Actor winner stars in his first feature as director, »

Lone Star Cinema: Fort Bliss

15 April 2015 9:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

It's nonsensical that actress Michelle Monaghan isn't a bigger name in Hollywood. She is an excellent foil to Robert Downey Jr. in cult dark comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and inspires Jake Gyllenhaal in Source Code. She was even in the lauded first season of True Detective (which I didn't watch). Fort Bliss, a film written and directed by Claudia Myers, is a special treat for Monaghan fans. Instead of supporting an A-list actor onscreen, Monaghan gets her chance to lead a film.

She plays Staff Sgt. Maggie Swann, recently returned from service in Afghanistan. Maggie is an army medic, quick to respond to injuries in the field, yet thrown by the changes that have occurred while she's been abroad. Her young son Paul (Oakes Fegley, This Is Where I Leave You) has lived with Maggie's ex-husband Richard (Ron Livingston, Office Space) and grown extremely close to Richard's new wife Alma (Emmanuelle Chriqui, »

Every Nicholas Sparks Movie, Ranked From Best to Worst

8 April 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Best-selling romance author Nicholas Sparks's brand of schmaltz and tragedy has given us such go-to tearjerkers as "The Notebook," but not every book has become a weepy classic.

Since 1999, with "Message in a Bottle," his films have earned more than $800 million. Lately, however, his appeal seems to be dwindilng, at least for moviegoers. Last year's "The Best of Me," starring Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden, had the lowest opening yet of any the films based on his books. Will the latest adaptation, "The Longest Ride," stars Scott Eastwood (yep, son of Clint) do better?

It wasn't easy -- since rarely have critics and audiences disagreed more -- but we ranked Sparks's movie adaptations from best to worst. »

/Film reported that Columbus is attached to adapt I Kill Giants, based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Joe Kelly and J.M. Niimura. Oscar winner Anders Walter is directing, and Treehouse Pictures will finance.

Originally published as a limited series between 2008 and 2009, I Kill Giants centers around a young outsider named Barbara Thorson. Her inability to fit in makes her life difficult, and she copes by escaping into a fantasy in which giants are real and it’s her job to stop them.

10 Deleted Stars That Were Bigger Than The Final Movie

21 March 2015 1:18 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

What works in the script can’t always work in practice. It’s entirely usual for directors to cut whole characters from their film in the edit, for the sake of brevity or just because said characters’ scenes weren’t working in the execution.

This means actors can unwittingly find themselves on the cutting room floor, regardless of talent or of effort put in. Pity, for one, poor Michelle Monaghan, the True Detective star who was cut completely from both Syriana and Constantine.

There have been instances where the biggest stars have seen their work edged out of films for one reason or another, even if it seems commercially counter-intuitive to cut a major star from a feature. Big names equal bigger business; which is why, for example, Gwyneth Paltrow got paid $3.6 million to have her name appear prominently on the poster for Infamous even though she appears in just one scene of the movie. »
