Michael G. Barnett was born in 1948 in Alberta, Canada as Michael Guy Barnett. He is a producer, known for Wayne Gretzky: Above and Beyond (1990), Ultimate Gretzky (2003) and The Top 5 Reasons You Can't Blame... (1999). He is married to Dalyce Barnett. They have five children.

The on and off-ice ventures of then-client Wayne Gretzky became so extensive when he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on 9 August 1988, Barnett moved to the States with him.

In 1980, Barnett opened sports management agency CorpSport International (Edmonton, Alberta) modeling it after International Management Group (IMG). In 1990, he sold CorpSport to IMG and became president of IMG hockey operations.
As the owner/operator of the restaurant-lounge The Sports Page (Edmonton, Alberta) in the late 1970s, he organized an annual celebrity-athlete softball game.
Named Senior Advisor to the President, and General Manager and Director of U.S. Amateur Scouting for the New York Rangers. [July 2008]
(August 28, 2001) Named general manager of the NHL Phoenix Coyotes by Coyotes's president and managing partner - and Barnett's former client - Wayne Gretzky. [August 2001]
(11 April) Fired as general manager, executive vice president and alternate governor of the Phoenix Coyotes.
