Other Angle has boarded international sales rights on Maria Gabriela Cardenas’ thriller “A Dark Foe” in the run up to the AFM.
The film stars the helmer’s father Oscar Cardenas, Selma Blair, Kenzie Dalton, Graham Greene and Bill Bellamy. It follows a guilt-ridden FBI agent, Tony Cruz, stranded in the painful memory of the abduction of his sister, who has to face-off with the serial killer who took her away. “A Dark Foe” was released by Vertical Entertainment in the U.S. in July.
Cardenas, who co-wrote the film with her father, said, “Tony Cruz’s devoted love and obsession to find his sister and his irrational fear of the dark is what makes ‘A Dark Foe’ a unique story that resonates with every audience.”

Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.
The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.
Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

"Two couples, one baby, and no regrets." Gravitas has unveiled a trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Babysplitters, which premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival last year and it played at the Newport Beach, Vancouver, Raindance, Nashville, and San Diego Film Festivals. After two busy Los Angeles couples decide to join forces in raising a baby together, this "fresh and sunny" comedy takes many hilarious twists and turns. First it's the planning. Then the sometimes messy business of conception. Then, well... The cast is lead by Danny Pudi, Emily C. Chang, Maiara Walsh, and Eddie Alfano. Described as "combining the DNA of She's Having a Baby and Indecent Proposal", this quirky romantic comedy film tries to redefine the expectations of what parenting is supposed to be. But does it all work out...? You'll have to watch to find out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sam Friedlander's Babysplitters,...

Other Angle has picked up international sales rights to “Babysplitters,” a U.S. comedy directed by Sam Friedlander (“Larry Gaye: Renegade Male Flight Attendant”) as part of the French company’s move into English-language movies.
“Babysplitters” is a high-concept comedy about two couples who have mixed feelings about having kids and hatch a plan to share one baby. While it initially seems like the perfect compromise, things spiral out of control.
The movie, which stars Danny Pudi, Emily Chang, Maiara Walsh and Eddie Alfano, has already screened at North American festivals, including Santa Barbara and San Diego, where it won awards. It also played at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Variety‘s review of “Babysplitters” said “The trials and travails of impending parenthood are captured through Friedlander’s highly comedic filter, giving birth to enough dazzling wit to sustain the gimmick.”
Friedlander said the film was inspired by his own doubts and fears about parenthood.

The 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will run from Jan. 15 to Jan. 25, 2020 — a radical shift in dates that will affect Oscar strategies as well as other festivals.
Next year, Academy Award nominations will be announced Jan. 13, two days before the start of the Santa Barbara Festival. The Oscar ceremony will be Feb. 9, which is two weeks earlier than this year’s event. Those changes will continue to have a ripple effect on the dates of other festivals as well as awards planning.
The Santa Barbara Fest has enjoyed a long (but unofficial) Oscar connection. This year, Variety presented its annual Artisan Awards earlier this week to nine behind-the-camera creatives who are all Oscar nominees; other contenders saluted at Sbiff this year include Glenn Close, Viggo Mortensen, Rami Malek, Melissa McCarthy, and Richard E. Grant.
Santa Barbara next year will overlap with Sundance, which will run from Jan. 23 to Feb.

Good friends often split restaurant checks, but can they split child-raising duties? That’s the catchy premise of writer-director Sam Friedlander’s outrageous comedy “Babysplitters,” which earned the Panavision Spirit Award for Independent Cinema at the Santa Barbara film fest. Combining the DNA of “She’s Having a Baby” and “Indecent Proposal,” Friedlander’s audacious hook is sure to spur thought-provoking discussions about its progressive parenting ideas. The trials and travails of impending parenthood are captured through Friedlander’s highly comedic filter, giving birth to enough dazzling wit to sustain the gimmick.
Married couple Sarah (Emily Chang) and Jeff Penaras (Danny Pudi) are having trouble trying to conceive — that is, to conceive of a life as full-time parents. Jeff’s feeling the pressure of being stuck in a dead-end sales job at a startup company, and Sarah is feeling the pressure of being at the mercy of her ticking biological clock.

Earlier this summer, filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass, alongside Seed&Spark, the film-focused crowdfunding platform with built-in distribution, announced a brand new initiative designed to find and bolster new filmmaking talent all over the country. Their Hometown Heroes partnership was designed to challenge “filmmakers from all over the country to tell stories that have never been told from wherever they are,” including a large-scale call for crowdfunding campaigns for narrative feature films on the Seed&Spark platform.
Submissions opened for the initiative in August and the rally launched on September 12, when the 73 participating films began their crowdfunding campaigns. All campaigns closed on October 13. More than $860,000 was raised across all rally projects, who also amassed a total of 63,000 followers in the 30-day period.

This year has been, by all accounts, tumultuous. In the past, viewers might turn to romantic comedies to remind them that everything will be Ok; to distract themselves from the seemingly unending onslaught of disheartening news, and inspire them to believe in the future.
But 2017 has seen a slight shift in the genre’s purpose. This year, more “rom-coms” than ever are taking their stories very, very seriously. From the black comic truths of Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Divorce” to the healing power of love post-trauma in Tig Notaro’s “One Mississippi,” this batch of romantic-minded comedies are addressing issues as honestly as anything else on television.
Sure, there’s still room for flirtatious fun, “will they or won’t they” pairings, and soul-bearing emotional confessions, but the list gathered below speaks to the state of the world: Love can still conquer all, but it’s not a cloaking agent.

While Supergirl has always nailed the characterization of Kara Danvers and her band of do-gooder friends, the show had a big problem with underdeveloped villains over its first two seasons. This is clearly something the producers have tried to fix this year, though, with Odette Annable’s Reign. It’s still early days, of course, but it sure looks like she could go on to become one of the more layered antagonists of the Arrowverse.
Introduced in the season 3 premiere, ordinary National City citizen Samantha Arias discovered that she had superpowers when she saved her trapped daughter. Thanks to the stinger at the end of the season 2 finale though, we’re well aware that Sam is really Reign, a Kryptonian being known as a Worldkiller. Right now, the character is struggling to find out what she is, which should make it all the more dramatic and tragic when she eventually descends into villainy.

The sixth episode of “Better Things” Season 2 is one of television’s best — not just of the year, but of the golden age and beyond.
Titled “Eulogy” and dedicated to the late Robert Michael Morris, who makes a brief cameo, the episode is intent on appreciating the consummate reality of everyday life while you’re living it. The season is, too. “Better Things” is a challenging, deeply rewarding, and ultimately miraculous experience because of how it draws extra attention to what matters and curtly dismisses what doesn’t. Both elements are typically communicated via frank remarks either profoundly moving or very, very funny (sometimes both) and each episode captures Pamela Adlon’s unique blend of stubborn — and often inappropriate — love in such a way you’ll wish more people acted as brashly genuine as she does. Hell, you may even start acting that way yourself.

“The Spoils of War” may be a hard act to follow, but Game of Thrones season 7 marches on.
Its latest instalment, “Eastwatch,” is due to premiere via HBO on Sunday, August 13th, and it seems Daenerys will be trying to make amends with Jon Snow after blatantly ignoring his advice and riding Drogon over Westeros – much to the dismay of the Lannister army and, in particular, Jamie, who was last seen plummeting to the depths of a nearby lake. To her credit, Dany’s preemptive attack didn’t result in the destruction of the Red Keep (and with it, hundreds of innocent lives), and was more of a strategic power play to strike back at the Lannisters after losing Dorne, Casterly Rock, and much of her Iron Fleet.

Dev Diary screens Wednesday, July 19 at 5:00pm at the Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis) as part of this year’s St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase.
Ticket information can be found Here
Although St. Louis game designers the Coster brothers — Adam, Sam, and Seth — have a reputation for developing projects quickly, they have spent the last two years working on only one game. Sam’s dream game, “Crashlands” has helped him battle cancer as he struggles with Stage 4B lymphoma.
Alessio Summerfield, co-director of Dev Diary, took the time to answer questions about his film for We Are Movie Geeks in advance of it’s screening at the St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase.
Interview conducted by Tom Stockman
Tom Stockman: What was your filmmaking experience prior to Dev Diary? Is this your first feature-length documentary?
Alessio Summerfield: Prior to Dev Diary James Reichmuth and I came from two different backgrounds.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Thoroughly charming. Spider-Man’s signature light comedy works surprisingly well even as this story is uniquely steeped in the darker Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m “biast” (pro): love the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Oh, god, not another Spider-Man movie! We’re all tired of Spider-Man, aren’t we? Like how every Avenger gets their own movie: Iron Man and Cap and Thor and Ant-freakin’-Man and Black Widow– oh, wait.) 1. “Friends From College” Season 1 (available July 14)
Why Should I Watch It? Ivy League graduates are largely insufferable, but Netflix is challenging that notion by assembling the most likable cast in recent memory to play a bunch of Harvard alumni reuniting in their late 30s. (Ok, so this list pretty much proves that all famous Ivy Leaguers are awesome, but you know the non-famous are impossible bores. No? Just me? Damn it.) Anyway, “Friends From College” brings together Keegan-Michael Key (Ethan), Cobie Smulders (Lisa), Annie Parisse (Sam), Nat Faxon (Nick), Fred Savage (Max), and Jae Suh Park (Marianne) — plus Kate McKinnon and Ike Barinholtz as guest stars — in a comedic exploration of old friendships from the creative minds of Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors: Sorority Rising,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and Francesca Delbanco. Sounds like an ideal mixer, no? Good — at least we can agree on something.

Netflix's women's wrestling comedy Glow is now streaming, and the show is overflowing with a diverse cast of misfits just waiting for you to fall in love with them. The show's unlikeliest's hero is the director of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, Sam Sylvia. A former B-movie king, Sam is tasked with making Glow a reality, but who is playing the man behind that impressive '80s mustache? Glow's Sam Sylvia is played by comedian Marc Maron, a name you have no doubt heard before. Maron is best known for his hit podcast Wtf with Marc Maron and his self-titled IFC comedy, the irreverent Maron. As you can tell, the comedian is his own brand. Thanks to his distinctive dry, culturally savvy sense of humor, it's not hard to tell when you're watching something Maron is involved in. While he's not credited as a writer on Glow, he brings...

"I feel like you're ashamed everywhere we go." Another awesome horror short film worth your time. This year is a stand out year for deaf performances/characters, in films like Wonderstruck, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Baby Driver. We can also include this short film, titled Dawn of the Deaf, about a few deaf people who must band together to survive in a zombie apocalypse - though it's much more about the relationship the main girl has with everyone in her life. It was made by deaf actors in London and tries to show disability as a strength, not a weakness. Starring Caroline Ward as Sam. This takes its time to build up and establish all the characters, then tosses in some crazy twists that have a strong emotional effect. Watch in full below. Thanks to Alicia Malone for the tip on this. Description from Vimeo: "When a strange sound wipes out the hearing population, a small group of Deaf people must ...

Even though the worlds of film and TV are converging more than ever before, it’s interesting to note just how many of the people behind the biggest films of the year have tried their hand at TV work in the past.
“Get Out” director Jordan Peele never officially directed an episode of his long-running Comedy Central sketch show “Key & Peele,” but his debut film currently sits at No. 7 on the year’s domestic box office list. Go up and down the rest of that chart and you’ll find movies from directors who’ve made valuable contributions to TV comedies and dramas alike.
Most of these episodes were pilots or season premieres, ways for directors to help establish a template or shorthand for what governs life in front of and behind the camera for the duration of these series. While some of these filmmakers took multiple opportunities in the TV director’s seat,...

But what happened to survivors of the initial wave of the AIDS epidemic, those members of the lost generation we never lost? Does the younger generation afford these survivors the respect they deserve, and could it ever be enough? These are the questions at the heart of “After Louie,” a moving new film from original Act Up member Vincent Gagliostro.

Thanks to Supernatural, people get to see Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki kick ass every week as the demon-hunting Winchester brothers. While we love their onscreen bromance (literally), it's the bond they share outside of work that really tugs at our fandom hearts. The two actors have been close friends since the show premiered in 2005, and since then, they've seen each other through weddings, babies, and everything in between. So how exactly did these two meet? While the show is what obviously brought them together, their first interaction is actually a whole lot cuter than just two stars showing up on set. In a matter of hours, Supernatural will have wrapped its twelfth season with a two-hour finale as the cult favorite horror series continues its attempt at being this generation’s answer to Gunsmoke. But before the festivities kickoff, let’s have a look at a sneak peek that’s surfaced online today.
From what we can gather, the clip embedded at the top likely picks up not long after where last week’s episode left off – with Sam and Dean Winchester trapped in the Men of Letters bunker with the very woman who brought foot torture to primetime television, Toni Bevell.
Thanks to Mr. Ketch and his cohorts, this powder keg of a trio are left with seemingly no way out and a limited air supply. Knowing that desperate times call for desperate measures, it looks like they’ll rely on supernatural means (what else?) to get out of this precarious position.

“The Daily Show” may have entered a new era with host Trevor Noah, but it’s not like the old cast went into retirement. Husband-and-wife contributors Jason Jones and Samantha Bee are among the most productive former members of the Jon Stewart “Daily Show” years — which is particularly notable once you discover they came close to taking over the program themselves.
Instead, the pair found a welcome home at TBS, where Bee hosts the weekly satiric news program “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” (which will air the special “Not the White House Correspondents Dinner” this weekend) and Jones serves as an executive producer. Meanwhile, the couple is also behind the TBS comedy “The Detour,” a subversive family comedy that they co-wrote and in which Jones stars.
Now wrapping its second season, “The Detour” began as an over-the-top road trip comedy with Jones as a corporate whistleblower moving his family across the country.

For Charlie Sheen, the laughs don’t end when the cameras stop rolling.

”Good thing we’re not in the U.K., or my adorable and ebullient 11 year old daughter, Lola, be driving!” Sheen, 51, captioned the shot, which depicts Lola in the passenger’s seat and her dad making a funny face for the camera from the driver’s side.
