The website i09 was first to report on the casting.

Per DC Comics lore, Vartox hailed from the planet Valeron and boasted powers on par with those of Superman, with whom he was friendly. In his most recent comic book iteration, Vartox attempted to woo Power Girl, in the name of (bow-chicka-wow-wow) repopulating his infertile planet with the most supreme female specimen he could find.

Did 'Supergirl' Cast 'Mentalist' Star as Villain Vartox?

19 March 2015 7:53 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It has only been a few weeks since production started on CBS' Supergirl, but the cast continues to grow. Ever since principal photography began, the show has added Malina Weissman as a younger version of Melissa Benoist's Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Kara Danvers, and Faran Tahir as The Commander, a military expert on aliens who tries to hunt down Kara. Today we have word from io9 that Owain Yeoman has signed on to play DC Comics character Vartox.

Vartox was created in 1974 by Cary Bates and Curt Swann, who has been portrayed as both a friend and enemy to Superman in the DC Comics. Most of his comic book appearances have come alongside Superman, so this could be yet another hint that the Man of Steel will have some sort of role in Supergirl. Vartox is just as powerful as Superman, but he can change his physical appearance at will. »

Owain Yeoman ("Extant," "The Mentalist") has reportedly signed on to play DC Comics character Vartox in the upcoming TV series based on the "Supergirl" comics at CBS.

In the comics, Vartox has been primarily involved in adventures with Superman rather than Supergirl, and has been both a friend and enemy. He has the ability to change his physical appearance at will, and is said to be just as powerful as Superman.

Production began a few weeks ago on the project which boasts a cast that includes Melissa Benoist (Kara Zor-El), Mehcad Brooks (James Olsen), Laura Benanti (Alura Zor-El), Faran Tahir (The Commander), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers), Jeremy Jordan (Winslow Schott), David Harewood (Hank Henshaw), Malina Weissman (young Kara Zor-El), Dean Cain and Helen Slater.

Owain Yeoman Joins CBS’ Supergirl As Supervillain Vartox

19 March 2015 3:26 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Previous bits of information on CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series suggested that the titular Last Daughter of Krypton would be going up against “The Lumberjack” in the pilot episode. Now, courtesy of io9, a new bit of casting suggests that some axe wielding logger won’t be the only one giving Kara Zor-El trouble in her debut hour of television.

According to the new report, The Mentalist and Extant alum Owain Yeoman has joined the cast as Vartox, a powerful alien from the planet of Valeron who’s gone up against Superman and Power Girl (an alternate universe version of Supergirl) in the comics. Vartox is said to be as powerful as the Man of Steel, with added powers of telekinesis, astral projection, telepathy and even the ability to change his appearance at will.

Vartox once battled Power Girl in hopes of forcing her to help him repopulate his planet. Though »

Supergirl to use the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Daily Planet set?

17 March 2015 2:04 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Okay, so this could be a story of rampant speculation, but it could be a fun little Easter Egg for us fans.

Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg, who is deep into the pilot episode of Supergirl for CBS, tweeted out a photo from the Warner Bros. back lot that indicates that they will be using a rather familiar location to fans of Superman. The set? The Daily Planet exterior from the much-maligned 90s TV show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

Check out the tweet below:

Helen Slater and Dean Cain’s roles in Supergirl revealed?

15 March 2015 1:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It was rather exciting fan news when it was announced that former Supergirl Helen Slater and former Superman Dean Cain had joined the cast of CBS’s Supergirl, which will see Melissa Benoist take on the role of Kara Zor-El.

Slater and Cain were announced as joining the cast, but it was not revealed who they would be playing. But those keen eyes at KryptonSite have noted that the show’s IMDb page has listed the actors as playing Fred and Sylvia Danvers, the adoptive parents of Kara.

Of course, this is not an official bit of news as IMDb is often user controlled and can get things wrong. However, Supergirl is being produced by Greg Berlanti, who is also the showrunner on The Flash, which has seen original The Flash star John Wesley Shipp come onto the show as the father of Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen. So, totally within the realms of possibility. »

Dean Cain And Helen Slater’s Secret Supergirl Roles Revealed?

13 March 2015 10:28 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Late last month, former Superman and Supergirl Dean Cain and Helen Slater (from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and 1984’s Supergirl, respectively) joined the cast of CBS’ upcoming Supergirl series in top secret guest roles. Now, courtesy of Kryptonsite, their parts in the show may have been revealed.

The site has noticed that Cain and Slater are now listed as Fred and Sylvia Danvers, the foster parents of the titular Kryptonian, Kara Zor-El, on iMDB. Due to the fact that iMDB is reliably unreliable and can often come with casting lists made by fans, this news should be taken with a grain of salt. However, if you look at some casting history for old DC television shows, these roles certainly make sense.

The Flash on the CW (which shares executive producers with Supergirl) currently stars former scarlet speedster John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen’s father. Smallville, meanwhile, »

'Supergirl' TV Series Photos Show Melissa Benoist as Kara

11 March 2015 4:24 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Earlier this week, photos from the set of CBS' Supergirl emerged, giving fans their first look at Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, following the official photo of the actress in costume as her superhero alter-ego. As production continues on the pilot, we have even more photos of Melissa Benoist in her Kara attire, where she is again seen wearing glasses. As we pointed out a few days ago, it seems likely that Kara is taking a page from her cousin Superman's playbook, using spectacles to conceal her true identity, since she isn't seen wearing them in the official Supergirl image. Other than that, the photos don't reveal too much, except that, perhaps, part of her duties as the assistant to Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) is to carry coffee at all times.

Of course, even though we have seen the official costume, it isn't known if Kara will be seen in her iconic outfit right away. »

Production started last week on the new CBS series Supergirl, with the network releasing the first official photos on Friday featuring star Melissa Benoist in her full Supergirl costume. Today, The Live Feed reports that Malina Weissman has been cast as a young Kara Zor-El. The actress will guest star in the pilot episode, confirming speculation that the DC Comics series will flash back to her childhood years. She most recently appeared on the big screen as a younger version of Megan Fox's April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

What isn't known at this time is if the young Kara will be on Earth or on her home planet of Krypton. Kara was born on Krypton but was sent to Earth before her home planet was destroyed. After arriving on Earth, Kara was taken in by her foster family the Danvers, who taught her to be cautious of using her incredible Kryptonian abilities. »

Supergirl: costume revealed for new TV show

7 March 2015 1:34 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Here’s our first look at Melissa Benoist as TV’s Supergirl, in costume and everything…

These last few weeks have seen the Supergirl TV show really come together, with casting announcements for the lead, her boss, her hunky friend and even her potentially-villainous next-door neighbour, amongst others.

Dean Cain of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman and Helen Slater of the classic Supergirl series have also been cast, with their roles remaining a mystery. We wouldn't expect them to be insignificant parts, either.

Now, though, we have arguably the most exciting nugget of news yet – the costume reveal. A good or naff costume can make or break a screen superhero (although Grant Gustin was quick to win over those who disliked his Flash costume), but we’re happy to report that Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl costume is pretty darn good….

It’s a mix of classic charm and modern grittiness, »
