Emmy Episode Analysis: Dylan Baker ('The Good Wife') would kill for Emmy in 'Tying the Knot'

15 July 2014 5:17 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Emmy voters seem to prefer Dylan Baker in even-numbered years: his current Drama Guest Actor nomination for "The Good Wife" follows bids in 2010 and 2012. He portrays Alicia Florrick’s (Julianna Margulies) creepy/loony/difficult client Colin Sweeney. -Break- Emmy experts predict drama races: 'Breaking Bad,' Matthew McConaughey ... Synopsis: In "Tying the Knot," Alicia visits Colin’s home, where a party is being thrown, so she can get his signature on important documents. While she’s there, a murder is committed and the primary suspects are Colin and his fiancée Renata Ellard (Laura Benanti); Alicia becomes the main witness. Renata is arrested on suspicion of murder, and a hearing is set where a plot hatched by Colin and Renata's attorney, Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), puts Alicia in a precarious position on the witness stand. The result is a victory for Colin, Diane, and Ren...' »

Variety Show Glory Days of ‘Sonny and Cher’ Could be Long Gone

18 June 2014 1:34 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

In the days of Ed Sullivan, the Smothers Brothers and Carol Burnett, the TV variety special stood tall as a regular feature of the broadcast schedule. But in recent years, they seem to have gone the way of the 13-channel universe — relics of the distant past.

Today, the occasional attempt to bring back the format hasn’t been very well rewarded with ratings, NBC’s “The Maya Rudolph Show” notwithstanding. That skit-based program met with mixed reviews but earned solid numbers (more than 7 million tuned in).

What viewers will more likely be served is something with a throughline, albeit with plenty of star power to stoke viewer interest, like NBC’s “Sound of Music Live!” It combined country music sensation Carrie Underwood with decorated Broadway vets Audra McDonald and Laura Benanti.

Social media certainly helped, turning the live events into bona-fide smashes, attracting nearly 19 million viewers while lighting up Twitter with traffic. »

Laura Benanti on her 'Sound of Music' journey from Maria onstage to Elsa in TV version (Exclusive Video)

13 June 2014 5:42 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Fifteen years ago, Laura Benanti made her Broadway debut as Maria, the nun turned nanny, in an acclaimed revival of "The Sound of Music." Last Christmas, she tackled the part of Elsa Schrader, the Countess who courts Captain von Trapp but loses him to Maria, in the live television version. In our recent webcam chat (watch below), she said she welcomed the chance to be a part of this event that starred Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer as the would-be lovers as well as six-time Tony champ Audra McDonald as the Reverend Mother: "We rehearsed it like a play, for seven weeks. And then we rehearsed for 10 days, two weeks with the cameras."  -Break- Join the heated Emmy debate going on right now in our red-hot message boards In the 1965 film version, which won Best Picture, three-time Oscar nominee Eleanor Parker played this part as more villainess than vamp. Tony Winner Tries Out for Every Role in NBC's 'Peter Pan'

11 June 2014 5:15 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Tony winner Laura Benanti is not just a droll and down-to-Earth Twitter presence; she's also (apparently) an explosive auditioner.  Benanti played Baroness Elsa Schrader in NBC's "The Sound of Music Live!" last year, and she's raring to give the experimental medium another try. Here, watch as she auditions for "Peter Pan Live!" and defies the legacy of Mary Martin with some uncouth language. But seriously, who cares about John Darling?  »

NBC's 'The Music Man Live': Let's cast it!

13 May 2014 11:38 AM, PDT | - PopWatch | See recent - PopWatch news »

Dammit, NBC — why’d you have to announce an upcoming live version of The Music Man that likely won’t premiere until 2015? How are we supposed to get excited for Peter Pan Live when we know that this is on the horizon?

No disrespect to the Lost Boys, but Meredith Willson’s 1957 classic is a much better show than the 1954 stage version of Pan. (So long as Mary Martin isn’t involved, anyway.) The songs are catchier, the book is wittier, the production numbers are more fun — and there’s much less chance of high-wire mishaps, which actually might make »

The Good Wife Recap: Sinner Party

28 April 2014 6:43 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

We begin at Colin Sweeney’s engagement party full of Robert Palmer girls, a disorienting and engaging opening scene, as always, for The Good Wife. Very Eyes Wide Shut vibe for Alicia’s seemingly routine trip to a client’s house to get a financial-disclosure agreement signed. The vibe continues as Sweeney dons his electronic glasses that match whoever he’s looking at with a porn star’s body type, and even as he introduces Alicia to his flirty new fiancée, Renata. He’s shocked that Alicia doesn’t know he’s engaged: “Do you really not follow my life? I follow yours.” Renata is into Alicia: “I have a theory about women with three-syllable names,” she says suggestively. She follows this with the statement, heavy with show-spanning symbolism: “Every saint is just a sinner waiting for an opportunity.” She’s played by the sexy Laura Benanti, who is so »

This Week on Stage: Denzel and Menzel add some Broadway star power

5 April 2014 6:00 AM, PDT | - PopWatch | See recent - PopWatch news »

King Kong ain’t got s–t on superstar Denzel Washington (at least, not until the beast’s new musical declares a firm date next season), as the movie megastar touched down on Broadway for the first time since his Tony-winning turn in August Wilson’s Fences in 2010. And like that heralded revival, he once again got raves from most outlets. Also receiving raves this week was Wicked star Idina Menzel, who dazzles in If/Then, the new tuner by the Next to Normal team of Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt. 'The Most Happy Fella' with Cheyenne Jackson and Laura Benanti hits Encores! revival series

4 April 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | - PopWatch | See recent - PopWatch news »

Six years after writing the classic musical Guys and Dolls, composer Frank Loesser introduced audiences to The Most Happy Fella. The show has an often lush, operatic, and nearly-sung-through score — but the book is a dated, borderline racist bit of nonsense about an Italian immigrant vineyard owner in the Napa Valley who talks-a like-a this-a and even refers to himself at one point as “a stupid, ugly, old wop.”

In other words, it’s just the sort of problematic chestnut to get a five-night-only revival this week as part of the New York City Center Encores! series, a two-decade-old program »

Besides the Olympics, the big sports news over the weekend was that Missouri All-American Michael Sam announced he is gay, and, if drafted this spring, the defensive end could become the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Andrew Rannells, Jonathan Groff, Laura Benanti, and more star in Russia's fake Broadway musical -- Video

23 January 2014 12:22 PM, PST | - PopWatch | See recent - PopWatch news »

How does a community band together to protest Russia’s anti-gay legislation? A musical, of course.

Dozens of New York stage stars have produced a fake musical that finds Russia’s fictional Broadway community (“The Great Red Way,” as they say) staging a protest show in response to the Russian government stance on homosexual propaganda via theatrical performance. In the U.S., who better to satirize than a group of musical theater actors?

There’s a little something for everyone here: Jonathan Groff and Jeremy Jordan as two ill-fated Olympians, Laura Benanti and Stephanie J. Block as lesbian astronauts, Michael Cerveris as a soliloquizing Putin, »
