How ‘Rick and Morty’ Creators Animated Trippy ‘Back to the Future’ Riff for Adults (Emmy Watch)

21 June 2016 11:39 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

While animated sci-fi series “Rick and Morty” began as a hallucinatory “Back to the Future” riff, in its second season on Adult Swim it’s turned more Philip K. Dick in its trippy embrace of alternate realities and alien worlds. Sociopathic scientist Rick Sanchez enlists naive grandson Morty in a series of mind-bending, intergalactic adventures, putting their dysfunctional family in continuous peril.

For creators Justin Roiland (“Adventure Time” voice actor) and Dan Harmon (“Community” creator), the first season was all about the crazy inventions, while the second concentrated more on exploration. “We’re trying to make sure that we never paint ourselves into a corner conquering the nihilism of an infinite universe,” said Harmon.

The comedy is both smart and low-brow with scattered sci-fi and other pop cultural references along with plenty of sex and scatological humor.

The flat animation style, meanwhile, evokes both “The Simpsons” and “The Ren & Stimpy Show. »

Seriously, Maroon 5's "Sugar" as told by the "Never Gonna Give You Up" video is low-key actually good.  The artist behind these remixes is Tronicbox, and wow, we hope there are more to come. Switzerland: Up Next! Nicolas Steiner

27 May 2016 12:03 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“A festival treasure that treats its subjects with a dignity that transcends judgment and a poetic sensibility that ranks it among the year’s most remarkable cinematic discoveries,” Variety’s Peter Debruge wrote of “Above and Below,” Nicolas Steiner’s graduation film at Germany’s Film Academy Baden-Württemberg, rating it among his top ten movies of 2015.

Other have shared his enthusiasm. Oscilloscope bought U.S. rights to “Above and Below” last year. A two-hour, lyrical cinematic essay, shot in widescreen and documenting five outsiders living on the margins in the California desert, the film was also Switzerland’s most-prized feature fest title last year, per promotion agency Swiss Films,

May 27’s German Film Awards, where “Above and Below” competes for best documentary and cinematography (d.p. Markus Nestroy), may be one of the film’s last chances to add to its prize haul, which includes kudos at the San Francisco, »

5 Reasons Why 'Angry Birds' Crushed the Competition at the Box Office

22 May 2016 9:00 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

So much for the three-peat.

"Captain America: Civil War" could have come out on top for the third straight weekend. It could even have lost 45 percent of last weekend's business (when it earned $72.6 million) and still outdistanced this weekend's three new wide releases. Even after three weeks, you might still have expected the Marvel mega-movie to outdistance three seemingly-undistinguished newcomers: a period action comedy starring no-longer-a-box-office-draw Russell Crowe and never-really-a-box-office-draw Ryan Gosling; a Seth Rogen comedy sequel, and a cartoon based on an app that everyone thought was really cool six years ago.

Nonetheless, "The Angry Birds Movie" knocked down "Captain America," along with "The Nice Guys" (pictured) and "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," as easily as a short stack of pigs. The cartoon earned an estimated $39.0 million, about $1 million more than distributor Sony had predicted. "Civil War" had to settle for second, with an estimated $33.1 million (down 54 percent from a »

ABC Orders Comedies ‘Downward Dog,’ ‘Imaginary Mary’ and ‘Second Fattest Housewife’

12 May 2016 4:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ABC has ordered three new comedies to series, “Imaginary Mary,” “Downward Dog,” and the project formerly known as “The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport,” now known as Untitled Sarah Dunn.

The live action/CGI hybrid “Imaginary Mary” centers around Alice (Jenna Elfman, “Dharma & Greg”) a fiercely independent career woman whose life is turned upside-down when she meets the love of her life — a divorced father with three kids. This triggers even more upheaval when the slightly unhinged imaginary friend she created as a child suddenly reappears to help her navigate the transition from single girl to a woman ready for a family.

The series also stars Stephen Schneider as Ben, Rachel Dratch as the titular imaginary friend Mary, Nicholas Coombe as Andy, Matreya Scarrwener as Dora and Erica Trembay as Bunny.

The series hails from “The Goldbergs” writers and exec producers Adam F. Goldberg and David Guarascio, and exec producer Doug Robinson. »

Castle Recap: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

4 April 2016 8:20 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

When it comes to Castle‘s Ryan-, Esposito- or RySpo-centric episodes, the reactions tend to be mixed — those who judge the episode based on its own merits versus those who bristle against anything that steals Caskett time. But given how Season 8 as a whole has been a, um, special animal when it comes to  Rick/Kate interactions, perhaps this look at a romantic blast from Javy’s past will be assessed more fairly.

Celebrate Rick Astley's 50th Birthday with All His Hits That Aren't 'Never Gonna Give You Up'

6 February 2016 12:50 PM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Depending on your age, you may be interested to know that Feb. 6 marks the 50th birthday of either pop singer Rick Astley - or as you may better know him - the British guy from that video prank meme. The two are one in the same, of course, but as a result of a strange (and apparently deathless) Internet joke, Astley boasts two very different fan bases: The people who bought his records starting in the late '80s and the people who encountered him after being tricked into clicking on the video for his 1987 hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up. »

The Oscar ‘Race': Hollywood’s ongoing diversity drama

27 January 2016 11:40 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Anghus Houvouras on Hollywood’s ongoing diversity drama…

I’m white. Take a minute, let that settle in. I know it’s shocking. I’m like the Rick Astley of film columnists because you probably first thought I was black and like Rick Astley you’re always a little bummed when you click on a link and it turns out to be me. I’m not just white, I’m super white. Roger Deakins uses me to color balance his camera. My blood can be used as liquid paper. I’m so white the Academy Awards are considering giving me a lifetime achievement award. So take the rest of this column with a grain of salt, because a white man talking about racism is like an arsonist talking about fire safety: we’re familiar with the subject but probably not the best suited to discuss the topic with any sensitivity. »

'Walking Dead' Has No End in Sight, More Spinoffs Possible

7 January 2016 5:01 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The TV landscape is certainly an unpredictable one, with some shows canceled before their first season comes to a close, and others going on to find years upon years of success. In the basic cable TV landscape, most shows don't typically last beyond seven or eight seasons, although there are a few exceptions like Fxx's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which just kicked off its 11th season. AMC's The Walking Dead will come back to wrap up the back half of Season 6 next month, but during the network's TCA winter tour panel, AMC's Joel Stillerman revealed there are absolutely no discussions about The Walking Dead's endgame yet.

"What's so fascinating about The Walking Dead is that Robert Kirkman set out to do something that proved to be remarkably brilliant in a couple of very fundamental ways. One is he wanted to use the world of the zombie »
