As EastEnders replaces two of its stars with new actors, we look back at some of soaps' most bewildering cast swaps
It is one of the most jarring things that can happen to a soap addict: a character you've known and loved for years, and have watched experience more drama/tragedy/breakdowns than most people have in their whole lives, suddenly arrives on screen one day looking and sounding entirely different.
EastEnders fans will need to brace themselves as Melissa Suffield and Charlie Jones leave Albert Square to be replaced by new actors. But Lucy Beale and Ben Mitchell won't be the only soap characters to have overnight transformations: there are plenty of other disconcerting recasts to enjoy. Denise Van Outen led a charity run for pregnant women yesterday (18.02.10). The TV star - who is six months pregnant with her first child with husband Lee Mead - recruited some of her pregnant famous friends to take part in the Bumps and Babies Mile in Battersea Park, London to help raise money for Sport Relief. Denise was joined in the run by Five News presenter Natasha Kaplinsky, Radio 6 DJ Nemon and her seven-month-old daughter Ella, Carly Zucker, former 'EastEnders' actress Kim Medcalf and Olympic badminton player Gail Emms. Denise said: ''It's brilliant that these five lovely ladies have agreed to undertake .. »
Danniella Westbrook has claimed that the door is being left open for her to return to EastEnders. The actress finished filming a three-month stint with the BBC soap late last year, though her character Sam Mitchell has not yet bowed out on screen. Westbrook's brief return saw her playing the part of Sam for the first time in nine years. However, Kim Medcalf had appeared in the role between 2002 and 2005.
