The cancellation of The Goldbergs didn't come as a big surprise to fans earlier this year.
The series was in its tenth season, and numbers were falling, but given that Wednesday's finale felt more like a season finale, there are questions about whether there was time to craft a conclusion.
Unfortunately, the cast learned the series was done four days after the final episode was actually filmed.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, who played Beverly Goldberg for all ten seasons, opened up about the news in an interview with TV Line.
They told us like four days after we wrapped our season. So, like, two days before our wrap party," the star expressed.
"In retrospect, I guess [it] was the best way for it to happen because if we knew ahead of time, nothing would've gotten done. We would've all been sobbing," McLendon-Covey added.
Had the creatives been given more notice, the ideal finale would have included more closure.

Say it ain’t so, Schmoopie! After 10 seasons and 229 side-busting episodes, we’re saying goodbye to ABC’s ’80s-based sitcom The Goldbergs. Based on the life of series creator Adam F. Goldberg, the comedy explored the gnarliest decade via big-loving mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), bombastic father Murray (Jeff Garlin) and their three children: aspiring singer Erica (Hayley Orrantia), wired Barry (Troy Gentile) and video camera–toting Adam (Sean Giambrone) — as well as Beverly’s rascally father Albert “Pops” Solomon (George Segal). “Adam always had a very specific vision, and he really established just a great template for a family comedy,” says executive producer Alex Barnow. That included Goldberg’s real home video footage at the end of most episodes. Time travel to 1980-something — a phrase heard in each episode after the pilot — and relive this most excellent sitcom. “The Goldbergs” is coming to an end after 10 seasons on ABC, according to reports. The ’80s-set half-hour comedy was based on creator Adam F. Goldberg’s childhood experiences.
With over 200 episodes and a decade-long run, the Sony Pictures Television series — which follows the title family in a Pennsylvania town — has earned the distinction of being the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air. The season finale, set to air May 3, will now serve as a series ender.
The logline for Season 10 is as follows: “With everyone living back under the same roof and Beverly adjusting to her new role as Grandsmotherer, the Goldbergs pandemonium is crazier than ever. As this latest chapter of life continues to unfold, the Goldbergs remind us that there is no bond greater than family, and there is nothing they can’t handle with each other’s support.”

“The Goldbergs” is ending after 10 seasons at ABC, Variety has confirmed with sources. The Season 10 finale set to air on May 3 will serve as the single-camera comedy’s series finale.
The move to end the series is not altogether surprising, even though it has been a cornerstone of the ABC comedy slate throughout its run with solid ratings returns. “The Goldbergs” is currently the longest-running live-action network comedy on the air, but has faced difficulties in the past few years. George Segal, who starred as Albert “Pops” Solomon on the show, passed away in early 2021. Later that same year, series star Jeff Garlin exited the show following an Hr misconduct investigation.
Ending the show also comes at a difficult time for the broadcast TV business, with the major networks having ordered just a handful of comedy pilots at this point in the traditional pilot season as overall pilot order volume continue to plummet.

Exclusive (Updated With Confirmation & Details): The Goldbergs’ journey through the 1980s is over. The family comedy’s current tenth season will be its last, with the May 3 season finale serving as a series finale. (Watch a promo for The Goldbergs‘ final episodes above.)
This does not come as a surprise. For shows of that age, renewals are not straightforward because of rising costs and declining ratings, and there had been questions over the past couple of years on how long The Goldbergs can go. The half-hour, from creator Adam F. Goldberg and Sony Pictures TV, is the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air and, given the way the broadcast business is going, there likely won’t be many others coming behind it that would be able join the exclusive club of live-action broadcast comedies with double-digit season, 200+ episode runs.

Jeff Garlin joins Never Have I Ever after exiting The Goldbergs amidst on-set misconduct allegations
Jeff Garlin is set to join the fourth and final season of Netflix’s teen drama Never Have I Ever, despite exiting The Goldbergs amidst on-set misconduct allegations levelled against him.
Garlin departed the ABC sitcom in 2021 after human resources conducted an internal investigation looking into claims from coworkers that the comedian’s physical and verbal conduct made them uncomfortable.
When word broke of his exit, he denied claims that he was fired, admitting that he had faced annual investigations by Hr during his last three years on the show, which he chalked up to “missed” jokes.
In order to address the 60-year-old actor’s absence, his character, family patriarch Murray Goldberg, was killed off the latest season.
Now, Garlin is set to make his first on-screen appearance since last year in Mindy Kaling’s series, EW has confirmed.

The Goldbergs said goodbye to Murray, their fictional patriarch, during the season 10 premiere Wednesday night.
It’s a farewell that balances the long-running ABC comedy’s signature sense of humor and its ’80s time period with an authentic look at the emotional range of grieving. It’s also a character send-off that follows former star Jeff Garlin’s exit last season after an Hr investigation and multiple complaints about his on-set behavior.
The aptly titled episode, “If You Build It,” sets the stage for the Goldbergs family, and ultimately the show, to build (or rebuild) their lives — and a show that will draw viewers back. It opens with a Patton Oswalt-narrated recap of the months between the season nine finale and Wednesday’s premiere. Through a series of speedy sequences, viewers get caught up on each family member.

Jeff Garlin, the former star of ABC’s The Goldbergs whose controversial real-life departure from the show saw his character killed off on the sitcom last night, says he suffers from bipolar disorder, a diagnosis he revealed for the first time in a brief Instagram post today.
“Bipolar is a motherfucker,” Garlin writes. “Sometimes it’s just too much to deal with. I’m doing the best I can. This the first time that I’ve opened up about this.”
Garlin left The Goldbergs last December following Hr investigations into misconduct allegations. Although the killing off of his character Murray Goldberg was disclosed last month by showrunner Alex Barnow, the episode that included the explanation for Murray’s absence aired as the season 10 premiere last night.
In the episode, the character Adam Goldberg said in an opening voiceover that “Just a few months ago, out of nowhere, we lost my dad.

The Goldbergs said goodbye to one of its most pivotal characters on Wednesday's season premiere.

What is the best way to handle the controversial exit of a lead actor? Well, by killing off their character, obviously. That is exactly what happened to Jeff Garlin‘s Murray in the Season 10 premiere of ABC‘s The Goldbergs on Wednesday, September 21. The decision to kill off the Golberg patriarch came as Garlin exited the sitcom series last December following a Hr investigation into misconduct allegations. The Goldbergs showrunner Alex Barnow revealed last month that the tenth season would pick up several months after Murray’s death, and that is what viewers saw in the premiere. The show opened with a voiceover, where the older Adam Goldberg (Patton Oswalt) explained what the various family members had been up to over the summer. “That year, there was one change that made everything stop,” Adam said as the camera focused on Murray’s favorite chair, now empty. Like The Conners and Two And a Half Men, ABC’s The Goldbergs dealt with the controversial exit of a lead actor by killing off their character off screen.
The fate of the Goldbergs patriarch Murray was revealed last month by showrunner Alex Barnow who said in an interview that Season 10 will pick up several months after Murray’s death.
That’s exactly what happened in the Season 10 premiere tonight, which addressed Murray’s disappearance in the voiceover opening, in which Adam recapped what the various family members had been up to over the summer with a focus on major changes in their lives.
“That year, there was one change that made everything stop,” Adam said as the camera slowly panned from one side of the living room, where family members were coming and going in fast-forward, to the other, where Murray’s favorite chair stood empty, while the music changed from frantic to somber.

The co-showrunners of ABC sitcom The Goldbergs have addressed the fate of Jeff Garlin’s character in the forthcoming season, following allegations of on-set misconduct levelled at the actor.
Garlin, who played family patriarch, Murray Goldberg, left the show in 2021 after an internal investigation into allegations of the 60-year-old actor’s physical and verbal conduct that reportedly made his coworkers uncomfortable.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, Alex Barnow explained that Garlin’s character will have already met his demise when the show returns for season 10.
“This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” he said.
“So we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.

Jeff Garlin’s ‘Goldbergs’ Character Getting Killed Off in Season 10 After His On-Set Conduct Scandal
The showrunners of The Goldbergs confirmed that Jeff Garlin’s character on the show, Murray, would be killed off following the actor’s departure from the ABC sitcom amidst accusations of on-set misconduct.
Garlin left the series back in December, following reports that he allegedly engaged in verbal and physical conduct that made people on the set of The Goldbergs feel uncomfortable. Because The Goldbergs was still filming its ninth season, the show had to figure out how to work around Garlin’s absence, but Season 10 will pick up several months after Murray’s death.

After receiving multiple complaints about the behaviour of Jeff Garlin on the set of The Goldbergs last year, the actor and the studio mutually agreed that he would not return. The long-running comedy series was in the midst of its ninth season when Jeff Garlin exited, which meant that the remaining episodes had to use Garlin’s stand-in, previously used dialogue, and unused takes to keep his character in the series. When The Goldbergs returns for its tenth season, they won’t have to tiptoe around Jeff Garlin’s absence as his character is being killed off.

Eight months after comedian Jeff Garlin left "The Goldbergs," showrunners have revealed how they're planning to get rid of Murray Goldberg. According to Variety, they've decided to go with the simplest, if most shocking, solution: killing off the character. Not only will Murray be dead when the new season premieres in September, but his family will already be mostly past their grief, as they anticipate welcoming Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff's (Sam Lerner) new baby.

ABC’s “The Goldbergs” will kill off Jeff Garlin’s character Murray, the patriarch of the family, upon its Season 10 return on Sept. 21. The former sitcom star exited the series in December 2021 following the results of an Hr investigation into unspecified on-set behavior.

ABC’s The Goldbergs will be minus a patriarch when it returns for Season 10 on Sept. 21: Jeff Garlin’s Murray Goldberg character has been killed off.

When fans of “The Goldbergs” tune into the ABC sitcom’s 10th season this fall, Jeff Garlin’s patriarch Murray will have already been dead for months.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Alex Barnow and Chris Bishop unveiled how “The Goldbergs” will deal with Garlin’s messy departure from the series midway through its ninth season. Garlin’s exit was a “mutual agreement” between himself and Sony Pictures Television following an Hr investigation into his on-set behavior, which the actor chalked up to “silliness.”
“This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” Barnow said, adding that Season 10 will introduce a new family member as newlyweds Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) have their first child. “So we’re starting with optimism about a...

Jeff Garlin has officially exited “The Goldbergs.”
The ABC sitcom confirmed that Season 10, which premieres September 21, will start sans Garlin’s character, Murray. Last season sparked controversy after a stand-in was used for Garlin’s Murray following toxic workplace allegations and Hr complaints against the actor.
“Well, [Garlin is] not going to be on the season, obviously. [Murray] will have passed, and we are sort of starting from a place of multiple months removed from his death,” co-showrunner Alex Barnow told Entertainment Weekly. “Jeff won’t be in the series this year, and so far the stories have been largely about looking forward rather than looking back.”
When asked if Garlin knew his character would be killed off, Barnow explained, “I’ve had a conversation with Jeff and he’s aware that he’s not being replaced. The truth is, I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I’m assuming he knows,...

Jeff Garlin is officially out of The Goldbergs. The showrunners announced Tuesday, August 30 that when The Goldbergs Season 10 begins on September 21, Garlin’s Murray Goldberg will already have been dead for 10 months. With Garlin having officially left the series in 2021 following complaints about his on-set behavior, Murray’s fate was up in the air. He was largely absent from The Goldbergs Season 9 as a result, his only appearance in the finale being a brief, brief shot of him attending Adam’s (Sean Giambrone) high school graduation. Showrunners Chris Bishop and Alex Barnow explained their plan to kill off Murray to EW. The season will kick off with a time jump that lands at newlyweds Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) welcoming their first child. “This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and...

Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

“The Goldbergs” has been renewed for Season 10 at ABC.
However, questions still remain about how the single-camera comedy series will handle Jeff Garlin’s character, Murray Goldberg, going into the new season.
Garlin exited “The Goldbergs” in December following an investigation into the comedian’s onset behavior after he was accused of misconduct. Variety exclusively reported that Garlin would still be a part of Season 9 through the use of off-camera dialogue pulled from earlier episodes and unused takes, as well as previously shot images of Garlin.
According to an individual with knowledge of the production, official plans for Garlin’s character are forthcoming, but it is likely that he will be written off the show.
“The Goldbergs” remains one of ABC’s more popular shows even this late in its run. Season to date, the show is averaging a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and just over 4 million viewers per episode in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings.

The Goldbergs, which recently hit the 200-episode mark, will keep going as ABC has renewed the family comedy for a 10th season.
With the pickup, the series from creator Adam F. Goldberg and Sony Pictures TV joins an exclusive club of live-action broadcast comedies that have gone to double-digit runs. It is the longest-running live-action network comedy series currently on the air.
The Goldbergs renewal comes as little surprise given that ABC in March inked a new deal with star/EP Wendi McLendon-Covey to continue on the series, as Deadline exclusively reported. Fellow original cast members Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile and Hayley Orrantia also have closed deals to return, Deadline has learned. They will continue to star alongside Sam Lerner, who was upped to series regular in Season 5.

Stars: Jessie T. Usher, Samuel L. Jackson, Alexandra Shipp, Richard Roundtree, Regina Hall, Matt Lauria, Titus Welliver, Method Man | Written by Kenya Barris, Alex Barnow | Directed by Tim Story
Shaft, directed by Tim Story, is a sequel to the film of the same name directed by John Singleton in 2000, while also serving as an indirect sequel to the Gordon Parks film of the same name, released in 1971. Shaft follows J.J. Shaft played by Jessie T. Usher as he is pulled into the world of private investigation with the suspicious death of his best friend to a heroin overdose. Entangled with his estranged father John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) the father and son team-up travel on a bonding journey and dive deep into the investigation that hides a far greater consequence than they both realise.
It isn’t far-fetched to entertain the idea that anyone watching this isn’t here for the plot.

Exclusive: The Goldbergs and Schooled executive producer Doug Robinson has re-upped his overall deal at Sony Pictures Television for five more years. Already the longest-tenured producer at the independent TV studio, where he has been for 17.5 years — all in the same office on the Sony lot in Culver City — Robinson and his Drp production company will remain there through 2024.
Under the big new pact, Robinson is working on a development slate, which includes a comedy project with newly minted Grammy winner Tyler, the Creator, and book acquisitions as he is plotting expansion into limited series and streaming next.

ABC’s “The Goldbergs” is getting a new showrunner.
Series creator Adam F. Goldberg is stepping down as showrunner ahead of the comedy’s upcoming seventh season, TheWrap has confirmed. He will be replaced by executive producers Chris Bishop and Alex Barnow.
The shift comes just months after Goldberg decamped from his deal at “Goldbergs” studio Sony Pictures Television for an overall deal at ABC Studios. Bishop and Barnow, who have both been with the comedy since its debut, have individual deals with Sony that keep them at the studio through 2021.

After six years at the helm, The Goldbergs creator/executive producer Adam F. Goldberg is stepping down as showrunner of the ABC comedy series, which is heading into Season 7.
The Goldbergs veterans Chris Bishop and Alex Barnow, who have been with the series since its premiere, have been named showrunners of the series produced by Sony Pictures TV, where both are under deals.
Goldberg will remain involved in the series and will continue as an executive producer. His relinquishing day-to-day showrunner responsibilities on The Goldbergs, which films on the Sony lot, comes on the heels of Goldberg leaving Sony Pictures TV for a big overall deal at ABC Studios. He is expected to focus on development for the Disney TV Studios unit.
Meanwhile, both Bishop and Barnow have separate multi-year overall deals with Sony Pictures TV that take them into 2021.
In addition to The Goldbergs, spinoff series Schooled also is undergoing a showrunner change.
