Diane Lane & Tony Shalhoub Probe ‘Mystery Of Love & Sex': Review

3 March 2015 5:23 AM, PST | Deadline | See recent Deadline news »

The best new play of this young year has brought pros Diane Lane and Tony Shalhoub and relative newcomers Gayle Rankin and Mamoudou Athie to Lincoln Center Theater At The Mitzi Newhouse in The Mystery Of Love & Sex. Bathsheba Doran’s keenly satisfying comedy of sexual matters and manners is a coming-of-age tale in the age of coming-and-going that bears a palpable kinship with <a title="'Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss On Peggy Olson, Heidi Holland & Moving On: Conversations With… »

Theater Review: The Mysteries of The Mystery of Love & Sex

2 March 2015 7:19 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

A new play that reads very well on the page risks getting staged above its station. Sad to say, The Mystery of Love & Sex, by Bathsheba Doran, is that kind: engrossing in theory, a botch in practice. Commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater and given a top-flight production there, it might, ironically, have benefited more from shabbier treatment, a process that could have revealed its substantial flaws while there was still time and freedom to do something about them. Shalhoub and Lane have meaty roles as Howard and Lucinda, »

‘The Mystery of Love & Sex’ Theater Review: Diane Lane, Tony Shalhoub Hook Up With ‘Masters of Sex’ Writer

Having written two biographies of gay men, I must confess that I don’t find coming-out-of-the-closet tales very interesting. There’s such a strict formula to the genre: The “I’m bisexual”ruse, the eventful First Time followed by lots of anonymous sex, the admission to family, that family’s rejection followed by some of the family’s acceptance, etc. In recent years, at least on stage, the “out” story line appears to have eclipsed the hetero “how I lost my virginity” version, which peaked with “The Summer of ’42” and has never recovered from the “American Pie” franchise.
