Scream Factory Blu-ray Reviews: The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Jackals, The Devil’S Candy

Besides releasing a number of our favorite classic horror films and the occasional cult oddity, the good folks at Scream Factory are also releasing a number of contemporary horror films and giving them a home on Blu-ray. Here’s a look at three of their recent efforts:

Ten years after it was slated for release, The Poughkeepsie Tapes is finally available on Blu-ray thanks to Scream Factory. Would that it had remained buried. A found-footage “documentary”-style horror film, it chronicles a serial killer who has videotaped all of his crimes. The film is pieced together through interviews with people familiar with the case, as well as footage taken by the killer himself. Imagine the video camera scene from Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, only stretched to feature length and repellant for totally different reasons.

Oh, man. The home entertainment releases for October 10th are bonkers, as we have a ton of brilliant offerings making their way to Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver hits multiple formats this week, and we also have the unrated cut of Wish Upon to look forward to as well. Scream Factory is digging up The Poughkeepsie Tapes (finally) for their Blu/DVD Combo release, and Criterion Collection has put together a stunning presentation for The Lure.

Cult cinema fans will want to pick up the new Blu-rays for Kill, Baby… Kill and The Green Slime, and for those looking for some new horror experiences, Temple, Open Water 3, and Demonic come home on October 10th.

Found Footage Flick The Poughkeepsie Tapes Found on DirectTV

2008. That's when we first reviewed the Dowdle Brothers' found footage film The Poughkeepsie Tapes (review). Years have passed, and no one has since seen hide nor hair of the movie... until now, that is.

John Erick Dowdle directs the film from a story he wrote with his brother, Drew Dowdle. Stacy Chbosky, Ben Messmer, Samantha Robson, and Ivar Brogger star in the faux documentary, which is available Now on DirectTV VOD.

Adam Green to Direct ‘Exorcism on Crooked Lake’

Performing an exorcism can be frightening and dangerous in itself, but add an unfriendly satanic cult knocking at the front door, and you have one horrifying situation on your hands. Such is the plot of Exorcism on Crooked Lake, and it was recently announced that Adam Green will direct this exorcism story from Revolver Picture Company.

Deadline reports that the script for Exorcism on Crooked Lake was co-written by Stacy Chbosky and John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle. The Dowdle brothers have had a hand in writing and directing a number of horror films, including: 2008′s Quarantine, 2007′s The Poughkeepsie Tapes, and the upcoming thriller, The Coup. Here’s the synopsis for Exorcism on Crooked Lake, which is set to begin filming this fall:

'Hatchet' Director Adam Green Boards 'Exorcism on Crooked Lake'
Adam Green (Hatchet) has signed on to direct the new horror-thriller Exorcism on Crooked Lake for Revolver Picture Company.

Stacy Chbosky is writing the script with John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Devil, As Above, So Below, which centers on an old priest, a younger priest and a female medical student who are tasked with performing an exorcism on a young pregnant woman. They soon find themselves targeted by a Satanic cult who want to claim the child as their own.

Nick Phillips, Kelly Martin Wagner, Sarah Shepard and Ben Browning are producing, with John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle serving as executive producers. Shooting is scheduled to begin this fall.

Adam Green is best known for writing and directing Hatchet and Hatchet II, while providing the script for the franchise finale Hatchet III. His other directing credits include Frozen and the horror TV series Holliston, which he created.

Adam Green Faces His Demons During the Exorcism on Crooked Lake

Late breaking news of the most devilish kind! Deadline is reporting that Adam Green ("Holliston," Hatchet, Frozen, Spiral) has signed on to helm Exorcism on Crooked Lake for Revolver Picture Company. Read on for details.

The film, Green’s next feature following the upcoming metafictional Digging Up The Marrow, follows a middle-aged priest, a younger priest and a female medical student who head to a remote house to exorcise a young pregnant woman only to find themselves under siege from a Satanic cult looking to claim the child.

The script is by Stacy Chbosky and John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, The Coup). Revolver is fully financing Exorcism on Crooked Lake, with the company’s Nick Phillips and Kelly Martin Wagner producing alongside Sarah Shepard and Ben Browning (Inquest). The Dowdle brothers are exec producing.

Filming begins this fall.

A serial killer has been terrorizing the community of Poughkeepsie, New York for several years.  Cops are baffled by the cleverness and dedication of the killer, as he is even able to frame a police officer, who is sadly executed for the crimes.  However, when police discover and raid the home of a suspect, they discover hundreds of VHS tapes, each detailing the crimes of this vicious killer which make up most of the running time of this film, padded with interviews and comments from supposed victims of the killer and others close to the case.

What will be obvious to many is that the primary problem with this film is in its presentation.  It is presented as a documentary and the viewer is suppose to be viewing the "real" footage of the killer and his crimes,

Sony Screen Gems Begins Developing 'Quarantine 2'

We got a little scoop to get you through another slow weekend. Word has come into Bloody-Disgusting that Sony Screen Gems has officially started development on Quarantine 2, the sequel to the box office success Quarantine from last October that grossed over 30m here in the States. The first film was a nearly shot-for-shot remake of the Spanish horror film [Rec] (arriving on DVD this July from Sony), while we're being told that Screen Gems is looking for a totally original pitch for the sequel. Filmax is in post-production on their own sequel to [Rec] that's slated for release later this year in Spain. Directed by John Downdle, the first film starred Columbus Short, Jay Hernandez, Jennifer Carpenter, Steve Harris, Jonathan Schaech, Rade Serbedzija, Greg Germann, Bernard White, Zulay Haneo, Marin Hinkle, Denis O'Hare and Stacy Chbosky.

'Quarantine' Coming to DVD and Blu-ray in February

Sony Home Entertainment has announced a February 17th release for John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle's Quarantine on both DVD and Blu-ray. Special features include: Commentary with Writer/Director John Erick Dowdle and Writer/Producer Drew Dowdle, Locked In: The Making of Quarantine and Dressing the Infected: Robert Hall's Make-Up Design. In the film a reporter (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman are trapped in downtown Los Angeles where a mysterious deadly and highly contagious strain of rabies has broken out resulting in a quarantine of the building and all its residents. No cover art has been released yet. Shown earlier today at the San Diego Comic Con was Sony Screen Gems' red-band trailer for Quarantine, which arrives in theaters October 10th. Directed by John Erick Dowdle from a script by John and his brother Drew, Jennifer Carpenter stars as a reporter who becomes "quarantined" in an apartment complex with a bunch of residents. Columbus Short, Jay Hernandez, Jennifer Carpenter, Steve Harris, Jonathan Schaech, Rade Serbedzija, Greg Germann, Bernard White, Zulay Haneo, Marin Hinkle, Denis O'Hare and Stacy Chbosky also star. Television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris) are assigned to spend the night shift with a Los Angeles Fire Station. After a routine 911 call takes them to a small apartment building, they find police officers already on the scene in response to blood curdling screams coming from one of the apartment units....
