Notebook Reviews: John Hyams' "Dragon Eyes"

26 May 2012 8:15 PM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Universal Soldier: Regeneration established John Hyams as a director with serious trad action chops, an acuity for 'scope framing, a disarming sense of emotional gravity, and a fondness for big dilapidated spaces. Like Joe Carnahan's somewhat-similar (albeit more "realistic") The Grey, Regeneration is a surprisingly actorly action movie—especially strong in its use of Dolph Lundgren, an underrated actor if there ever was one—with a bleak moral palette. However, very unlike The Grey, Regeneration isn't especially talky—the performance come chiefly through looks and posture, which allows the acting to blend with the action.

Hyams' new film, Dragon Eyes, isn't an accomplishment on the level of Regeneration, and some of its flashy conceits—like the Guy Ritchie-esque on-screen titles, or the cartoonish color grading—never gel with Hyams' camera style. Still, it's, as they say, "not without its pleasures"—and many of those pleasures could teach bigger-budgeted »

Tekken: Rise of the Tournament Prequel in Development

22 May 2012 8:39 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Crystal Sky is planning a prequel to last year's video game adaptation Tekken, which is currently titled Tekken: Rise of the Tournament.

Prachya Pinkaew is on board to direct, although don't expect any Tekken stars to sign on. According to Crystal Sky CEO Steven Paul, the prequel will cast actors who look like the characters from the popular video game series. Crystal Sky doesn't have a distribution deal in place as of yet, but the studio is aiming for a theatrical release.

The studio also announced that production will begin this summer on Dracula: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in Romania. Pearry Reginald Teo (Necromentia) is directing, although they have not cast the lead yet. Here's what Steven Paul had to say about this horror tale, which he hopes to be the launching pad for a new franchise.

'Ong Bak' Director Takes on 'Tekken: Rise of the Tournament'

21 May 2012 5:05 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

What do you do if you produce a live-action video game of a very popular (at one time, at least) video game, but it goes straight to video in the United States and the director of the actual game series disowns it? Keep making more, obviously. That's the case with Tekken, though in the interest of optimism, the second try is more promising the first. Now, if you're going, "Wait, there was a first live-action Tekken movie?" A quick recap. 2010's Tekken was directed by Dwight H. Little (who mainly does TV work, though he did direct Murder at 1600) and featured Jon Foo, Kelly Overton (both pictured above as Jin and Christie, respectively), Cary-Hiroykui Tagawa, Cung Lee, Luke Goss, and Mircea Monroe as a handful of fighters in a dsytopian future who fight...

Review: Jean Claude Van Damme & Cung Le Pic 'Dragon Eyes' Features Impressive Action, Empty Story

14 May 2012 9:01 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Hong, the lead character in “Dragon Eyes,” might as well be a Man Without A Name when he wanders into the small town of St. Jude. He seeks a second chance, an opportunity to atone for past violent misdeeds seen in fuzzy flashback. It doesn’t take long for the viewer to realize this means a lot of people are about to be kicked in the face. One of the marquee titles from After Dark Action -- the new action imprint from Dark Castle and After Dark -- “Dragon Eyes” at least delivers on this aspect.

Our hero is played by martial artist Cung Le, a tight ball of energy with a pout. Not an entirely expressive performer, he sets the tone for this low-stakes actioner, his thousand mile stare and minimal but clear English painting him as a Man of Serious Action. Director John Hyams, who has revealed himself »

Jean-Claude Van Damme on his new film 'Dragon Eyes,' his 'Expendables 2' villain, and kickboxing over 50

9 May 2012 3:58 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Jean-Claude Van Damme may be 51 years old, but he can still kick you through a wall. The kickboxing Belgian has been fighting through scores of baddies ever since he first roundhoused his way into our hearts in 1988′s Bloodsport. His latest film, Dragon Eyes, sees him taking the backseat as a mentor to martial arts star Cung Le, but with a role as the villain in Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming Silver Pictures Reunion Tour sequel The Expendables 2, there will be plenty of Van Damage in the near future. We spoke with the Muscles From Brussels about kicking ass, taking names, »

Instead, he gets stuck waiting for a bus in El Fronteras, a sleepy desert town that’s so uninviting that – forget about the ocean – he can hardly find a glass of water. Then, word of his money spreads to the El Fronteras underworld. Under sudden attack from corrupt cops, gangsters, and desperados, the Man »

New Trailer And Poster For Dolph Lundgren’s Stash House

21 April 2012 3:16 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The folks behind the After Dark Horrorfest are dipping their toes into the action genre with the After Dark Action series of films. True to their formula, the films will receive a simultaneous release on video-on-demand and in a limited theatrical run. The line-up features a who’s who of badasses that spend most of their time in the direct-to-video realm, guys like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Cung Le, and Scott Adkins. Ivan Drago himself, Dolph Lundgren, also makes an appearance in “Stash House”, which now has a kickass trailer and one-sheet poster. “Stash House” is about a young couple, very much in love, who buy what they think is their dream house. And it’s so much more affordable than they ever imagined. Like most things that seem too good to be true, this is very much the case. What’s the problem, you might ask? Good question. There is »

The three spoke on a panel called “Whapp! The Art of Fight on Film” to illuminate for the fans what makes those on screen battles so cool. Movie Review - Dragon Eyes (2012)

15 April 2012 2:49 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Dragon Eyes, 2012.

Directed by John Hyams.

Starring Cung Le, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Peter Weller.

Synopsis:

In New Orleans, a mysterious man looks to unite warring gangs against the lawmen who have been using them to advance their corrupt agenda.

John Hyams, son of Peter (Timecop), announced himself to the action world in 2009 with Universal Soldier: Regeneration. It was a film that cinema (or in this case, home video) didn’t particularly need or ask for. The cult hit original which it followed had already spawned one awful sequel, and two (unofficial) TV movie sequels. A third coming 10 years after the last seemed a pointless exercise. However what was delivered surprised many action aficionados. John Hyams unleashed a film that entertained and kicked ass. It may not have been brilliantly scripted but in terms of action, it bested a lot that the multiplexes were offering, including a standout car chase »

Dragon Eyes (2012) Movie Review

9 April 2012 1:53 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Let’s get one thing straight: This is not a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. Although his face is front and center on the DVD artwork, the big guy’s role in the film is very small. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it allows former Mma champion Cung Le to flex his considerable muscles. “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” director John Hyams’ immensely satisfying action epic “Dragon Eyes” puts Le in the proverbial driver’s seat, and he does a good job steering the audience through a number of jaw-dropping fight sequences that are as brutal as they are entertaining. As long as you don’t mind Van Damme tackling a much smaller role than most of us are used to, then you shouldn’t have a single thing to complain about. Screenwriter Tim Tori (“Prowl”) uses Akira Kurosawa’s classic “Yojimbo” as a framework to tell the tale »

3 April 2012 7:05 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

After Dark Films, the same folks who bring us the After Dark Horrorfest every year, are about to branch out with another closely related genre: action. This week, in partnership with Dark Castle Home Entertainment, they have announced After Dark Action, a series of "five original, adrenaline-pumping films" that will be released simultaneously on demand and in select theatres. The movies feature an impressive line-up of stars that include Jean Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Peter Weller, James Caviezel, Harold Perrineau, Scott Adkins and Christian Slater. It certainly sounds promising, but will these movies be any better than the direct-to-video drivel that a lot of these guys have been starring in over the past decade? The full list of films is as follows: Transit – Starring James Caviezel, James Frain, Elizabeth Rohm, Harold Perrineau and Sterling Knight; and directed by Antonio Negret and written by Michael Gilvary Dragon Eyes – Starring Jean Claude Van Damme, »
