The Best Viral Moment of the Year Goes to ‘Too Many Cooks’
All this week, we’re presenting the Vulture TV Awards, honoring the best in television from the past year. The nominees for Best Viral Moment are: Nicole Kidman on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Jon Snow at a dinner party, Late Night With Seth Meyers "Too Many Cooks," Adult Swim Anne Hathaway’s “Wrecking Ball” performance, Lip Sync Battle Australia takedown, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver And the winner is ..."Too Many Cooks" When "Lazy Sunday" first aired on Saturday Night Live back in 2005, the TV universe seemed to shift a bit on its axis. (Perhaps because it really did: The Lonely Island video, one of the earliest professionally created YouTube sensations, helped usher in the age of internet-tv convergence.) It would be a stretch to suggest Adult Swim’s "Too Many Cooks" will end up having a similar impact, but for a few weeks last November, Casper Kelly

The 10 Best TV Comedies of 2014

The 10 Best TV Comedies of 2014
Sometimes great TV comedy makes you laugh so hard you cry. And sometimes it just makes you cry.

If one thing became entirely clear in 2014, it’s that traditional descriptors like “sit-com” are so last century. Defining what makes a small screen laffer is no longer cut and dry. Digital platforms like Netflix and Amazon are following in the footsteps of industry innovators like HBO and Showtime and shattering the barrier between drama and comedy — and the obvious winner in this genre revolution is the viewing audience.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t great examples of the classic multi-camera comedy format still on the air (our list includes two of them), or that trendy single camera shows can’t be non-stop joke machines (we’d argue both “Veep” and “Silicon Valley” place laughs over pathos in every episode). But let’s also thank the shows pushing the envelope to make TV comedy a riskier,

33 Things on TV to Be Thankful for This Thanksgiving

At this time of year, it's good to be reminded that contemporary TV offers such a cornucopia of riches. This past year, in particular, has offered plenty to give thanks for -- in terms of both what's on the air and what is not. Among the things I'm thankful for:

That "The Flash" is actually good.

That recent, pricelessly funny Billy Bob Thornton guest spot as a lovelorn urologist-to-the-stars on "The Big Bang Theory."

That I don't work at the "Today" show.

That David E. Kelley is writing a TV show for Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman to star in.

That this is the last season for "Two and a Half Men."

That "Seinfeld" reruns still hold up pretty well.

That Casper Kelly made '80s sitcom parody "Too Many Cooks." Whether or not you like the finished product -- and it's often pretty disgusting -- I'm glad someone had the impulse to make it.

Talking With the Killer From ‘Too Many Cooks’

Talking With the Killer From ‘Too Many Cooks’
William Tokarksy is having a hell of a week following his breakout role as the menacing killer in "Too Many Cooks." We chatted with Tokarsky — who, in real life, speaks in an incredibly gentle southern drawl — about what the production was like, the reactions he’s received, and how to rock a Members Only jacket ... covered in blood. How did you get involved with "Too Many Cooks?" When I first retired, I started working as an extra in some TV shows and movies. Atlanta’s the growing movie/TV capital of the South now, and one of the shows I did was for Adult Swim — a little show called Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell. Casper Kelly [the creator of "Too Many Cooks"] is one of the creators and directors of that and we got to be friends working on set. They liked my look and asked me

Here Are the Lyrics to ‘Too Many Cooks’ — Sing Along!
If you found yourself subconsciously humming or trying to sing the words to "Too Many Cooks" this weekend, we don't blame you. There's no escaping the subliminal, hypnotic powers of the Adult Swim parody, which veteran scribe and producer Casper Kelly (Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell) unleashed on innocent TV watchers last Friday. Kelly penned the lyrics to the repetitive, cornball-but-catchy song featured in the video, and Shawn Coleman and Michael Kohler scored it. We've written out the lyrics below in full so you can succumb to their dark powers and properly sing along. (If you want to overachieve, we've also included the few instances of actual character dialogue.) There are a few voices on the track, but we figured you'd want to do it as a duet, so click play, grab a friend, and have at it.Man: It takes a lot to make a stew Woman:

Too Many Cooks: can you spot all the references to other TV shows?

Adult Swims homage to the opening credits of old TV shows has caused a sensation, turning nostalgia into an art form of its own

By now, youve probably seen Too Many Cooks, the parody video by cable network Adult Swim with the catchiest theme this side of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. (And if you havent, whats your deal? Seriously?) Created by Casper Kelly and Paul Painter, the 11-minute video takes the 80s sitcom opening credits premise and runs with it (at times literally), introducing us to no less than 60 characters, including Smarf, Coat and Lars Von Trier as Pie.

Since being uploaded on Friday, its been seen over a million times, and no wonder. Its a sitcom opening that ends up animated, set in space and dragged through blood spilled by a machete-wielding serial killer. (Who also shows up in the credits so youll know who he is dont worry.

Behind the Scenes of the ‘Too Many Cooks’ Video

Behind the Scenes of the ‘Too Many Cooks’ Video
About five minutes into watching “Too Many Cooks,” you begin to think, What lunatic made this? That lunatic was Casper Kelly, longtime Adult Swim writer and producer, and co-creator of Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell. Vulture spoke with Kelly about the short’s surprisingly long production schedule. Find out why it took a year and a half to make, what got cut for being “too wacky,” and whether or not Kelly was high. Where did the idea come from? It was a shower idea. I like that style of comedy like David Letterman when he’ll repeat something and then it’ll become annoying, and then it becomes funny again. Or Andy Kaufman would do that. I love that kind of humor, but I’ve never really tried anything like that. So I got that idea, but I didn’t think I could make it work for 11 minutes,

'Too Many Cooks': See the Insane Viral Video Hollywood Is Buzzing About

It's an 11-minute hallucinogenic odyssey that Looper (and future Star Wars) director Rian Johnson has declared worthy of being "in the Oscar running for best short." And since the people at Adult Swim have made it available online -- it debuted inauspiciously last month during a 4 a.m. programming block -- Too Many Cooks has blazed a trail across the Internet to become a must-see among in-the-know Hollywood creatives. What is it? That's a little hard to describe. From the demented mind of Casper Kelly, co-creator of other out-there Adult Swim titles like Stroker and Hoop and Your Pretty Face is

Have You Seen This Yet? Watch Adult Swim's Completely Weird And Totally Genius Sitcom Parody 'Too Many Cooks'

Adult Swim has an "Informercials" slot at 4 Am where they showcase oddball, offbeat programming. It's not exactly when anybody is actually watching the channel, so it says something that this week your Facebook and Twitter feeds have been clogged up with "Too Many Cooks." And unlike most things that everyone says to click, this is actually worth your time. Created by Casper Kelly, this is a parody of sitcom intros that plays out for twelve increasingly bizarre and hilarious minutes. As the opening sequence to the fake "Too Many Cooks" keeps rolling over and over, the characters find themselves in more and more horrifying situations, until the whole thing just goes so far off the rails that...well, you just have to see for yourself. If anything was made to be watched bleary-eyed at 4 Am it's this, and yes, that's a compliment. See what you've been missing below.

Watch: ‘Too Many Cooks’ Parodies Retro Sitcoms Before Descending into Madness

If you’ve been online over the past 24 hours, chances are you’ve seen mentions of Adult Swim’s “Too Many Cooks,” a bizarre, fever-dream of a sitcom parody that begins by spoofing the endless opening credit sequences found in family comedies of the ’70s and ’80s before devolving into a surreal send-up of everything from cop procedurals to primetime soaps, sci-fi dramas and the “G.I. Joe” cartoon, complete with a chilling twist.

The short is the brainchild of Casper Kelly, co-creator of Adult Swim’s “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell” and “Stroker and Hoop,” and debuted without much fanfare during Adult Swim’s 4 a.m. infomercials block in October. Since Thursday, it has trended almost constantly on Twitter as more unsuspecting viewers become hypnotized by its earworm theme song and general insanity. Look out for Lars von Trier’s cameo and prepare to be enthralled by Smarf.

Adult Swim’s Too Many Cooks Is the Stuff of Hilarious Nightmares

Adult Swim programming relishes the realm of the weird ranging from slightly off-kilter to the simulated drug trip of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Although Tim and Eric weren't involved in Too Many Cooks, a 12-minute short that aired in an "infomercials" spot at 4:00am last night, you'd be forgiven for thinking they were involved. Created by Casper Kelly, what begins as a parody of 80s sitcom opening credits eventually spins into brilliant madness. It's not comedy for everyone, but if you like the work of Don Hertzfeldt mixed with the surreal Tim and Eric, then this is a must-watch. It will probably be the most delightfully bonkers and inspired thing you'll see today. Hit the jump to watch Too Many Cooks. Via Indiewire. Adult Swim has been doing these short-films hidden in the infomercial slot for a little while now (presumably because it's fun to mess

Watch Adult Swim's Demented, Surreal Sitcom Parody 'Too Many Cooks'

Adult Swim has always fostered TV insanity, but the network has ascended to surreal new heights with the 12-minute video Too Many Cooks. Created by Casper Kelly and originally aired during Adult Swim's late night "Infomercials" slot, the short starts out as an innocent send-up of cheesy late Seventies/early Eighties sitcom intro credits. But it gradually becomes more demented, morphing from a wacky family comedy to a variety of genres (police procedural, sci-fi saga, superhero cartoon) as most of the ever-expanding cast is either blown up or brutally murdered by a creepy slasher.

Video: Too Many Cooks Takes Sitcom Parody to a Wackadoodle New Level

It’s the funniest sitcom you’ve never seen — unless, of course, you happen to be watching Adult Swim at 4 am.

Earlier this week, the cable net stealthily debuted in the wee hours of the morning Too Many Cooks, an 11-minute riff on the lost art that is TV’s traditional opening title sequence that is so wrong it’s right.

Stop what you’re doing, press Play above and thank us in the comments. (Shout-out to The A.V. Club for bringing Casper Kelly’s warped little gem to our attention. We owe you one.)

Watch: Too Many Cooks, An ’80s Apocalypse/Tribute in 11 Minutes

This is making the Internet rounds and will presumably swallow the entire world by midday at this rate, so why resist? Casper Kelly is a regular Adult Swim contributor, and this is his magnum opus. What begins as an extended parody of every single type of mediocre ’80s sitcom personage (the casting, finding the exact right face for every goofy dad, hectoring boss and bemused grandma, is really something) mutates into a series of other staples of the decade — G.I. Joe-esque animation, some kind of old-school Battlestar Galactica thing — before metastasizing into a self-reflexive slasher film, a hospital drama, […]

Adult Swim's 'Too Many Cooks' a sitcom theme song nightmare

Adult Swim's 'Too Many Cooks' a sitcom theme song nightmare
Yesterday, a friend sent me a Youtube link along with a brief note saying, "I’m not sure why I’m forwarding this to you except it’s the oddest f---ing thing I’ve seen on TV in a while, and…f---…I don’t know why…try to get through it…" With that kind of intro, how could I not immediately dive into "Too Many Cooks"? An Adult Swim short (created by Adult Swim vet Casper Kelly) that — like some of the channel's other weird experiments — debuted earlier this week at 4 a.m. (in a timelsot labeled "Infomercial"), "Too Many Cooks" is an elaborate parody of '80s & '90s sitcom title sequences that in time turns into... something else. As my friend said, it is the oddest thing you will have seen in a long time, but it may also be either the most brilliant or dumb thing.

Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell Cast & Crew Talk the Series' Creation/Approach, Portraying Satan, Favorite Horror Films, and More

The corporate world can be Hell, but according to Adult Swim’s horror sitcom "Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell," Hell is a lot like the corporate world. Filled with demon bosses, deadlines, and cubicles of doom.

As the series' season finale, “People in Hell Want Ice Water,” approaches at the stroke of midnight tonight (5/23), it was about time we got a bit of insight into the men behind the madness and red face paint. The show’s creators, Dave Willis and Casper Kelly, alums of Adult Swim series "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and "Squidbillies," and cast members Matt Servitto ("The Sopranos," "The Mentalist"), Craig Rowan ("College Humor Originals," "The Onion Sportsdome"), and Henry Zebrowski ("Girls," Martin Scorsese’s upcoming The Wolf of Wall Street) sat down to discuss the origins of their diabolically funny series.

The show’s creation, according to Kelly, came from an earlier Kelly/Willis
