Chicago – It pains me to say this — HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn” is a complete mess, a film littered with awful directorial decisions, built on a misguided screenplay, and featuring performances that range from mediocre to downright horrendous. I’m as big a cheerleader for HBO and their line of original films as you’re likely to find but this is one of the worst.
TV Rating: 1.5/5.0
It’s not merely that I so often love what HBO delivers (their current Sunday line-up of “Game of Thrones,” “Girls,” and “Veep” is one of the best two-hour blocks of television in years) but that the cast, crew, and subject matter of this 154-minute epic seems tailor made for me. I would say that Ernest Hemingway’s work is one of the reasons that I became an English major in college and that director Philip Kaufman’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” helped make me a film nut. »

Here's what you should do on Memorial Day weekend: Weather permitting, go outside. Party. Have fun with your friends and family.
But if you are stuck inside and in desperate need of "entertainment" that will make you laugh until you throw up, there's "Hemingway and Gellhorn" (9 p.m. Et on Monday, May 28 on HBO), which stars Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman. Now that the first season of "Smash" has ended, this is the best hate-watching fodder we'll probably have for many months.
Why is hate-watching the only realistic option? Because loving or even liking this expensive misfire is simply not possible. Even more than last year's turgid "Mildred Pierce," "Hemingway and Gellhorn" is a gigantic missed opportunity, a jaw-droppingly trying waste of time. Don't let the fancy names in the cast fool you: This is a stupid, stupid movie.
We don't hate-watch Syfy's Saturday movie offerings -- "Sharktopus," "Mansquito" and »

Hemingway & Gellhorn – premiering on HBO on May 28th and directed by Philip Kaufman (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Right Stuff, Henry & June) from a script by Jerry Stahl and Barbara Turner – recounts the passionate love affair and tumultuous marriage of literary master Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) and trailblazing war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman), following their relationship through the Spanish Civil War and beyond. As the two witnessed history, they covered all the great conflicts of their time, but just couldn’t overcome their own conflicts at home. The film also stars David Strathairn, Molly Parker, Rodrigo Santoro, Parker Posey, Lars Ulrich, Santiago Cabrera, Saverio Guerra, Peter Coyote, Diane Baker, Joan Chen and Tony Shalhoub. During this exclusive interview with Collider, accomplished filmmaker and multiple Academy Award nominee Philip Kaufman (whose writing credits include Raiders of the Lost Ark) talked about how this film was brought to him, making his first feature for television, »

I have scheduled this first part of my Cannes 2012 Preview to publish while I am somewhere over the middle of the United States, on my way to New York where I will connect with a flight heading into Nice. I'll be arriving in Cannes some time around 1 Pm Cet and my third straight journey to the Cannes Film Festival will begin, an experience that has easily become the #1 highlight of my year when it comes to covering movies. As hard as I have to work to cover the festival each year, it is absolutely worth it and based on the selection this year it looks like it will be just as fascinating. To begin, the festival runs from May 16-27, but I will only be in town through the morning of the 24th. As a result, two films that probably would have made my top ten most anticipated movies list won't, »

Merlin has come of age and is no longer the BBC family drama Sunday evening filler programme while the mighty Doctor Who recharges his Tardis. Each year the production, the writing, the performances, the ratings have all improved series after series, with the latest series ratings even beating that of the mighty time lord.
Series 4 is the game changer, the bar has been raised and the show takes on a more darker grown up approach toning down the comedy element of previous years, and finding a better balance between drama and humour. Episodes now have a progression instead of feeling like disposable stand alone tales. The principle legend of Arthur and Camelot is embraced and begins to come in to play. Stronger character development and the better execution of each players responsibilities and consequences of their actions make this the most mature and satisfying outing yet.
The main cast are all superb, »

The Fox network had great success with their Prison Break series for four years. They've now introduced a new TV show that revolves around Alcatraz, the most famous penitentiary in the United States. Will Alcatraz run for years or will it be quickly cancelled instead?
The Alcatraz series begins with the following statement: "On March 21st, 1963, Alcatraz officially closed. All the prisoners were transferred off the island. Only that's not what happened. Not at all." It turns out that every prisoner in the facility mysteriously vanished and they start reappearing nearly 50 years later, looking just the same.
FBI Agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill), Detective Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), and Alcatraz expert "Doc" Soto (Jorge Garcia) work together to capture the felons and try to uncover where they've been. Others in the cast include Jonny Coyne, Parminder Nagra, Santiago Cabrera, Jason Butler Harner, »

Chicago – We’re back with another DVD Round-up of recently released titles that may catch your attention when you’re browsing the DVD store this week. (Do they still have DVD stores?) This time, read this entire piece aloud in a British accent. Once again, these round-ups are designed as informative, to let you know about releases that might not get as much attention and what special features to expect if you pick them up. Having said that, this is a particularly strong round-up. Ricky Gervais, Camelot, and dinosaurs? You really can’t go wrong with any of these choices.
All three titles were released on January 10th, 2012.

Just as one mysterious character departs, another enters as Merlin welcomes its newest addition – Agravaine, chief adviser to the King. Played by acclaimed actor Nathaniel Parker, the character provides yet another potential snake in Camelot’s grass for Arthur and Merlin as they fend off Morgana’s attack in the epic conclusion of the season-opening, two-part episode entitled “The Darkest Hour, Part 2.” The episode premieres this Friday, January 6 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Syfy.
The magic of Merlin continues to cast a spell over audiences: Last Friday’s fourth-season premiere of Merlin attracted the biggest-ever first-episode audience in its Syfy history, with viewership 29% higher for Season 4 than Season 3. Episodes from all three previous seasons are available on iTunes, and Season 3 will be released January 17 on DVD.
In “The Darkest Hour, Part 2” the kingdom of Camelot is on the brink of collapse as Lancelot (Santiago Cabrera) races back to Camelot with the dying Merlin, »
