Based on its setup, The New Daughter would appear to be a ghost story. A troubled novelist moves his two children into a large and isolated house in rural South Carolina, and immediately they start to experience things that cannot be so readily explained. The audience might soon expect to see spirits of the dead haunting the film’s family, yet the fact is, something else entirely lurks on this cursed property.
Kevin Costner was coming off positive reviews for his villainous role in the psychological thriller Mr. Brooks when he was cast as the father in The New Daughter. Also joining the first directorial feature from Rec screenwriter Luis Berdejo was Pan’s Labyrinth star Ivana Baquero. Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” will go head-to-head with two other big Spanish films – Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and “The Endless Trench,” from Aitor Aguirre, Jon Garaño and José Mari Goenaga – at Spain’s 34th Goya Academy Awards, to be held Jan. 25 in Malaga.
“Pain and Glory” garnered 16 nominations,” “While at War” 17 and “The Endless Trench” 15.
Though most pundits would put “Pain and Glory” as the frontrunner, the outcome is difficult to predict. World-premiering in Spain before competing in Cannes, where Antonio Banderas won the best actor prize, “Pain and Glory” was reckoned by Spanish critics to be Almodóvar’s best film in a decade.
But ever since the screenplay for Luis Buñuel’s “Viridiana,” which went on to win the Palme d’Or, was written off in Spain as nonsense, the Spanish industry has steadfastly refused to kowtow to internationally acclaimed directors or indeed talent.

Twice Oscar-nominated Bruce Dern and Emmy Award-winning Brian Cox (“Nuremberg”) are attached to star in Martin Rosete’s “Remember Me,” which will go into production on Aug. 24, shooting in Spain, France and Los Angeles.
“It is without a doubt the most unique love story ever put on the screen,” Dern told Variety.
A co-production between the U.S.’ Create Entertainment, Spain’s Lazona Films and Kamel Films, and France’s F Comme Film, key cast also includes Caroline Silhol (“La Vie en rose”) and Brandon Larracuente (“13 Reasons Why”).
A “quirky romantic comedy,” according to Rosete, “Remember Me” turns on Claude (Dern), a 70-year-old widower and former theater and cinema reviewer who learns that the love of his life, Lilian (Silhol), is in a senior home going through difficult times without anybody looking after her. The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”

In the 1930s, a group of Spanish children are found to have somehow contracted a disease which makes them unable to feel pain. For the safety of the general public, they are kept locked up. Intersecting with this story, a talented doctor, David (Alex Brendemuhl) is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and while enquiring about the possibility of a bone marrow transplant, goes on a search to find out the truth behind his heritage.
The idea of what could be done with a bunch of kids who can’t feel pain is one which is explored pretty well through the first half of Painless. Doctors performing experiments and the almost inevitable entrance of Nazis is not entirely original but certainly interesting stuff and is...

The Spanish horror series Rec 4 takes to the high seas for its latest movie. Here's an action-filled new trailer...
After two extraordinarily terrifying and claustrophobic films, the Rec series headed off to a wedding in Rec 3: Genesis. And while the comic flourishes weren't entirely unwelcome, it felt more like a spin-off (a kind of Rec Gaiden) rather than a proper sequel to Luiso Berdejo and Paco Plaza's previous pair of films.
The good news is that Rec 4 takes the series back to its murky (and hopefully scary) roots. It takes place immediately after the second movie, and catches up with news reporter and zombie outbreak survivor Angela Vidal (Manuela Valesco).
More good news: Rec 4 looks about as close as we'll ever get to an Under Siege sequel with added zombies. The movie takes place on a ship in the middle of the ocean - presumably, the last refuge from the outbreak,...

Our International Sales Agent (Isa) of the Day coverage resumed for this year's Cannes Film Festival. We feature successful, upcoming, innovative and trailblazing agents from around the world (during and after the festival) and cover the latest trends in sales and distribution. Beyond the numbers and deals, this segment will also share inspirational and unique stories of how these individuals have evolved and paved their way in the industry, and what they envision for the new waves in global cinema.
New Morning Films is a relatively new sales company based in Paris that represents exquisite art house films including "Letter to the King" and "Before Snowfall" (both by Hisham Zaman), which both won The Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film at the Goteborg Film Festival in 2013 and 2014. Its founder Germain Labeille has years of experience to draw from, and it all began as a child in Melbourne, Australia when the chairman of Village Roadshow sparked his interest in cinema by inviting him to private screenings. As an adult, he studied acting, production, and eventually worked in film sales for Rezo, Jour2Fete, and Albany Films International.
What's unique about Germain is his experience living in Poland for several years, which gave him fluency in the country's language and culture. This intercultural experience places him ahead of most when it comes to representing Polish and Eastern European talent, and has helped him to take on the Polish documentary "Minkowski | Saga" by Rafael Lewandowski, the feature "Little Crushes" by Aleksandra Gowin & Ireneusz Grzyb, and the Slovenian Film "Good to Go" by Matevz Luzar.
Germain shares his experience, his passion to help new directors, and his intercultural perspective on doing business:
How did you first get into film?
The father of my best friend in Melbourne was the chairman of Village Roadshow. I first met him when he was developing the video rental business in Australia back in the 80s. He would invite me to private screenings and hired me to sell ice cream and popcorn, while letting me eat the ice cream as a reward on the side. Each time I took the plane to Melbourne, he would organize a stopover in Hong Kong and welcome me as a guest to his studios. It made for a very wonderful childhood. When I was 11, he said to me, "Germain, one day you'll also work in the cinema industry," and I always kept it in mind. That's probably why I'm here, in a way.
How did you start New Morning Films?
My first job in sales (apart from selling ice cream) was with Rezo for eight months. I started out as an assistant. That's where I learned this industry is about promoting and defending creative voices that need help to get out there, and you need to be passionate to do that.
My next job was with a distribution company specialized in art house films called Jour2Fete, and then I went on to open up international sales for Albany Films International. Nearly a year ago, I moved on and opened my own company. This is how New Morning Films was born.
How's your first year of business going?
It's going well, because of all these contacts I've built over the years with other sales companies. People on the major festival circuit have started to know me, so it's much easier. The main thing in this industry is to have the contacts. If you don't have them, it's extremely difficult.
What makes New Morning Films welcoming to its clients?
My idea is to promote new directors that don't know how to get the ball rolling with their films. I come in with my contacts and experience to expose their films in ways they can't do on their own.
I work very close with producers, and we move together. I don't disappear once the agreement is signed, and we collaborate to show these films because the business is tough right now. There's a distribution revolution going on, and the question is how to succeed in getting these young directors out there - especially with theatrical distribution going down.
What is the biggest challenge of working with first time directors?
The challenge with young producers and directors is that they have extremely high expectations, and you have to help them find the balance. They can make fantastic films, but this is a competitive world. Some think they're going to win awards at every festival, and become acclaimed overnight. In a way, it's very understandable, because they've put so much time, money, and soul into their films. The main goal of first time films is to be seen as much as possible. Maybe it won't be released everywhere, but it's a sure fire way to get people talking.
Please talk about the New Morning Films Slate.
I have eight films in my care, and they've all done really well at gaining awards and attention at festivals. They're from all over the world: from Canada ("Une Jeune Fille-a Journey" by Catherine Martin), the USA, Poland, Slovenia, Spain ("Violet" by Luiso Berdejo) Germany, Scandinavia ("Princess" by Arto Halonen) and Kurdistan. I also like following the careers of the directors; I'm lucky enough to have two films by Hisham Zaman ("Letter to the King" and "Before Snowfall"), who won the Tiger Award in Goteborg two years in a row. This is the first time it's ever happened to a director. All his films talk about the cultural differences and difficulties that the Kurdistan people encounter in places like Germany and Scandinavia.
How do you approach the challenges of doing business between multiple countries and cultures?
Every country has a certain way of doing business, and it helps to know about it before you dive in. With China for example, it's extremely difficult to release a film there, because there's a lot of censorship that you have to consider. Due to this difficulty, there are very few European and American art house films that succeed in breaking into the Chinese market.
Every country and culture has its stereotypes, in which there is some truth. The Americans go straight to the point. They're very pragmatic, and the contracts are very long! With the Russians, it can take longer to get answers, and their organization is different. Really, it is a question of observation and listening. It comes from experience, and learning how to deal with them. As for the Spanish, the film makers are very passionate, so it's important not to let their excitement overwhelm you... even if it turns into anger. At the end of the day, you have to do your best to be aware of how people think, and genuinely reach an understanding with them.

We live in age of images, from Instagram to SnapChat, from the visuals of big screen spectacles to the intimacy of small screen dramas, to even the photos we carry around in our pockets on our phone. But what if one image took hold and you couldn't let go? Written and directed by Luiso Berdejo, and starring Junio Valverde, Leticia Dolera, Miriam Giovanelli, Ricardo Darín, Carlos Bardem, and Erik Palladino, the film follows Alex, living in Santa Monica, California, who one day finds a Polaroid picture of beautiful girl and promptly falls madly in love with her. He determines to track her down and soon begins a journey that will forge a connection with his deceased grandfather, while also taking Alex to the depths of his soul. In this exclusive clip, we get a nice sense of the nervy tone of the film, as well as the visual approach, which finds Berdejo mixing media.

Having been someone who has attended both FrightFest and Lff in the past, I have to say that location aside, there are few similarities, and even less when it comes to the films themselves. Painless is the exception which proves the rule however, it feeling like a film which legitimised its place,...

It’s no big secret I love horror films, but 2012 hasn’t been a great year. In my top ten, three films carry over from 2011, two won’t be released until 2013, two are animated and another isn’t much of a horror film. With that said, 2012 gave us Berberian Sound Studio and Cabin In The Woods, and for that, I am forever grateful. Here is a list of the 21 horror films from 2012 I liked best.
****
#1: Berberian Sound Studio
Directed by Peter Strickland
Written by Peter Strickland
UK, 2012
Berberian Sound Studio reminds us of the power of sound over the visual image, and can surely join the ranks of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and Brian DePalma’s Blow Out as an absorbing appreciation of sound design. But both thematically and visually, Berberian is more of a descendant of the school of David Lynch and Roman Polanski. As things get increasingly,...

[Rec]³ Génesis
Directed by Paco Plaza
Written by Paco Plaza, Luiso Berdejo and David Gallart
Spain, 2012
The first [Rec] was a haunting and sinister horror film that ended on an intended note of malevolent ambiguity. [Rec] ², for better or worse, tried to elucidate the questions posed in the first. In [Rec]³ Génesis, however, it feels like the franchise was hijacked by misguided works of fan fiction, by people who loved the two previous chapters, but who fundamentally misunderstood why they were so effective. As a result, [Rec]³ is a film that forges a misbegotten identity of its own by categorically burning the bridges with its predecessors, betraying the very reason why we gave a damn about the third installment in the first place.
Génesis takes place a few hours before the events of one and two, at a wedding between Spanish couple Clara (Leticia Dolera) and Koldo (Diego Martín). Unbeknownst to them, one of the guests,...

Chicago – Gorehounds, unite! You fans of the slimy red stuff, those of you who love decapitations and disembowlings while you munch your popcorn, and those looking for something that feels honestly alive after inert horror films like “The Apparition” and “The Awakening” are required to support the ridiculous splatterfest “[Rec] 3: Genesis,” opening in New York and L.A. this weekend and now available On Demand. This thing has a pulse. It may be pushing blood through a gushing jugular but it’s beating.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza’s “[Rec]” (2007) is a gloriously tight little horror flick (that was remade as the decent “Quarantine” [2008]) that used the found footage concept effectively before you were exhausted with it. A news crew went to investigate a disturbance in an apartment building and was trapped there as a zombie infection broke loose. It was a tight, scary little piece of experimental cinema and it worked.

[Rec]3 Genesis
Stars: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez, Borja Glez. Santaolalla, Mireia Ros | Written by Paco Plaza, Luiso Berdejo | Directed by Paco Plaza
Going it solo for the third film in the series, Paco Plaza helms what is, by far, a much stronger film than [Rec]2 and a film that not only changes the game for the franchise, abandoning as it does the “found-footage” perspective on proceedings, but also expands the mythos and the scope of the series, throwing religion much more to the fore in a way that takes the series, and the traditional zombie film, to whole new levels. The film is also, at its core, a love story. Yes, I did say love story.
[Rec] Genesis sees Clara and Koldo celebrating their recent nuptials at a posh Barcelona mansion when all hell (literally) breaks loose. With the zombie count rising and the newly-married pair separated...

Co-directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró first made their mark with [Rec] back in 2007, the first in one of the most well-known horror franchises outside of Hollywood in recent years.
Plaza returns behind the camera for the latest instalment, [Rec] 3: Genesis, before Balagueró brings us the follow-up, [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, expected sometime next year.
We caught a brilliant new trailer for the film back in March ahead of its Spanish debut, and now a great new clip has made its way online over at Yahoo Movies, in promotion of its VoD debut in the Us last Friday.
“The original [Rec] crew are back, ready to submit their ensemble cast to another fight for survival against the zombie infection. This time to the backdrop of an original soundtrack. The new chapter will see the film “open up” by using a more traditional cinematographic style. However, the film’s roots have not been forgotten, and...

They may have started off collaborating together on the first two installments of their hit found footage franchise, but for [Rec] 3 and 4 Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza went off to direct separate sequels.
As unconventional as that may be, this is how the duo had decided to round out the story they began in 2008 with the original film.
[Rec] 3: Genesis (review) hit most VOD platforms last week and is gearing up for a theatrical engagement in early September, and in honor of the sequel's release, Dread Central recently had the opportunity to catch up with Plaza to discuss his third [Rec] film as well as the film's tonal departure, creating a romantic story set during a gory viral outbreak and how planning a wedding is almost more difficult than planning for production.

When I heard about the release of Rec 3: Genesis, hitting Us VOD on August 3rd and theaters on September 7th, I wondered what a third film could possibly do for this found footage horror franchise. After all, only so much "originality" can be pounded into what is essentially a found footage zombie film, regardless if the virus is actually a demonic possession. Luckily, it seems that the filmmakers felt the exact same way and took us in an entirely different direction. In fact, director Paco Plaza and writer Luiso Berdejo took Rec 3: Genesis the way of Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness. Instead of maintaining the sinister tone of the first two films, this installment is steeped in conveniently placed chainsaws, suits of armor and bloodthirsty demons. And I enjoyed every minute. [Rec] 3: Genesis Movie Review
Today is Koldo and Clara’s wedding in the Spanish countryside and all is running smoothly…until Koldo’s uncle Victor begins showing signs of a strange illness brought on by a dog bite on his hand.
During the grand reception, Victor goes full zombie, bites another wedding guest, and all Hell breaks loose, turning the couples’ nuptials into a full-fledged nightmare, The wedding reception makes for fresh cinematic zombie territory as Koldo and Clara become separated and spend much of the remainder of the film avoiding the undead and searching for one another within the grand hall, kitchen, chapel, and grounds of the facility.
[Rec]3: Genesis is a departure from [Rec] (review) and [Rec] 2 (review) in several ways, the most obvious being its visual aesthetic. At first we think we’re back in familiar, video camera Pov territory.

After months of agonizing suspense, we’ve now got official word that Magnet will bring Paco Plaza’s [Rec] 3: Genesis to VOD on August 3rd, with a theatrical release slated to follow on September 7th. The film hit Spanish theaters on March 30th, and has done nothing but gain steam since. Rec 3: Genesis will hit Spanish theatres in roughly one week. Given the success of the first two franchise installments, fans have been clamoring for a stateside release. While we can’t offer you too much, we do have a pair of brand new clips to see release today, and they’re awfully bloody. Leticia Dolera, Javier Botet and Diego Martin star in Paco Plaza's third [Rec] film, which is scheduled to hit Spanish theatres on March 30th, 2012. Luiso Berdejo serves as the screenplay’s co-writer along with Plaza, who has penned the film’s two predecessors as well.

Koldo and Clara’s wedding is horrifically interrupted when some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. Before they know what’s happening, the bride and groom find themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal, as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on the wedding.
Cast: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martin
(World Premiere)
Film Synopsis (from SXSW.com)
Who’S It For? If you’re scouring VOD for something to keep you occupied and amused in the late hours of the night, pick this one. Even if zombie movies feel tiresome, this one will engage cynics if just during its swift running time.
Overall
Rec 3 is a nifty little zombie movie that provides a satiable dosage of madness for midnight viewing. It’s bloody and usually funny,...

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced the highly anticipated features in its Midnighters section, as well as the complete short films lineup, which will debut at this year’s Festival from March 9-17, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
The eleven films announced in the 2012 Midnighters program include a feast of titles that promise to rouse, haunt, and thrill the eager SXSW late-night audiences with an eclectic mix of thrills from genre filmmakers at the top of their game.
“Though our regular program already includes a healthy sampling of genre fare, the Midnighters section highlights those that go a bit crazier, gorier, and all-around balls out-ier,” said SXSW Senior Programmer and Operations Manager Jarod Neece. “This year's program includes both veteran names with anticipated follow-ups and fresh discoveries with new voices and charts otherworldly, insane territories that breathe new life into horror conventions.”

That did not take long. Yesterday we shared the international trailer for [Rec] 3 with you, and today we have the English subbed version for you to enjoy. The footage is a little different from the international trailer so you might want to check out both of them. [Rec] 3 Genesis will open in Spain on March 30, 2012 and is written by Luis Berdejo and stars Leticia Dolera, Javier Botet (The Last Circus) and Diego Martin. Synopsis: "The action in Rec Genesis encompasses the events of the first two films and after the sense of claustrophobia previously experiences. The action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality.

*Updated with an exclusive look at the English-subbed version! I'd love to wake up to something this amazing every morning (again!). Inside you'll find the stunning full trailer Paco Plaza's [Rec] 3 Genesis, which will open in Spain March 30, 2012. The trailer carries a pretty huge reveal -- that [Rec] 3 breaks out of the found footage/cinema verite mold. The scope looks massive and the cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking. The film, written by Luis Berdejo, stars Leticia Dolera and Diego Martin and take the infection to a wedding reception. Have your cake and eat it too (yeah, I went there). It looks like it's going to be a red wedding (went there too). The success of the first two films (in theaters together raised over 35 million worldwide) have made [Rec] 3 Genesis one of the most anticipated horror films inside and outside our borders.

After much anticipation the official trailer for [Rec] 3 Genesis is finally here. Unfortunately there are no subtitles, but who really cares? The cinematography in the trailer is breathtaking. [Rec] 3 Genesis will break out of the found footage mold as experienced in both the original and [Rec] 2. What is a little disappointing is the film will still have some found footage scenes. The change in filming style and the fact...
