53rd Chicago International Film Festival Review – Marshall (2017)

Marshall, 2017.

Directed by Reginald Hudlin.

Starring Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Sterling K. Brown, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Keesha Sharp, John Magaro, Roger Guenveur Smith, Jussie Smollett, Derrick Baskin, Barrett Doss, Ahna O’Reilly, Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas, Andra Day, Marina Squerciati, and James Cromwell.

Synopsis:

A young Thurgood Marshall battles through one of his career-defining cases.

Chadwick Boseman may be most known to the mainstream eye for portraying superhero Black Panther in the current crop of Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters, but when not suited up for battle he often finds himself playing real-life historical figures (his performance as Jackie Robinson in 42 is criminally overlooked) that have influenced humankind and the world for the better. And his greatest crusade won’t be collaborating with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to save the universe, instead, it will be biopics like Marshall that simultaneously showcase his serious acting chops while instilling hope for social justice

Marshall – Review

With the movie awards season in full gallop, this week sees the release of a perennial favorite of Academy members: the big screen biography. Now this is a special type of “biopic” in that it doesn’t focus on the entire life (or many years of the life) of the subject, as with films like Ray or The Aviator. Really this new work zeroes in on a year or so of this great person’s career, much as Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln concerned the last few months of the ole’ rail-splitter. Actually this may be closer to John Ford’s terrific Young Mr. Lincoln as it concentrates on a very early case, long before his great fame. And, in a way, this could be considered an “origin” story, much like the initial entries of movie hero franchises (or the first issues of comic book heroes). Yes, this man’s a

Marshall Trailer: Chadwick Boseman Is Thurgood Marshall

Marshall Trailer: Chadwick Boseman Is Thurgood Marshall
Open Road Films has released the first trailer and eight new photos for the upcoming biopic Marshall, starring Chadwick Boseman. While superhero fans will get to see this talented actor portray T'challa in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War next year, this year they'll get to see him play a real-life hero, attorney Thurgood Marshall. Before making history as the first African-American justice to sit on the Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall took on one of his most important cases ever in the early 1940s.

Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, Marshall, is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days, a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder.

The supporting cast includes Dan Stevens as Lorin Willis, who prosecuted the case against Joseph Spell, James Cromwell as the judge presiding over the case, Keesha Sharp as Thurgood Marshall's wife, Buster, Rozonda Thomas as prominent African-American author Zora Neale Hurston and Jussie Smolett as author, poet and activist Langston Hughes. Open Road Films has set Marshall for release on October 13, which puts it up against Paramount Pictures' mother!, Universal Pictures' Happy Death Day and Stx Entertainment's The Foreigner. It will also debut between Blade Runner 2049 and My Little Pony on October 6, and an October 20 weekend with six wide releases, Warner Bros.' Geostorm, Sony's Granite Mountain Hotshots, PureFlix's Same Kind of Different As Me, Universal's The Snowman, Lionsgate's Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween and The Weinstein Compan's War With Grandpa.

Reginald Hudlin directs Marshall, his first feature directorial effort since 2002's Serving Sara, although he has been keeping busy in other areas, producing Django Unchained and The Boondocks, while becoming a prolific TV director, helming episodes of New Girl, Modern Family, The Middle and more. It was also announced earlier this month that Reginald Hudlin will direct a Shadowman movie for Valiant Comics. The screenplay for Marshall is a unique collaboration between renowned trial lawyer, Michael Koskoff, and his son, screenwriter Jacob Koskoff (Macbeth). Marshall is being produced with the full support of the Thurgood Marshall and Samuel Friedman estates, including their children, John W. Marshall and Lauren Friedman.

Reginald Hudlin also produces alongside Paula Wagner and Jonathan Sanger, with Peter Luo and Belton Lee serving as executive producers. While he has gained a huge fan base for playing T'challa/Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman is also becoming quite adept at portraying historical figures. Marshall marks the third biopic for the talented actor, following his breakout performance in 42, as Jackie Robinson, the first big league baseball player to break the color barrier, and his 2014 biopic Get on Up, where he played the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. Take a look at the new trailer and photos for Marshall below.

Chadwick Boseman is a Man on a Mission in This Fantastic First Trailer For Marshall

I've got a great trailer here for you to watch for a fantastic looking new film called Marshall. The movie based on the true-life events of legendary attorney and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who is played by Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther, 42). He is joined by Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast) who takes on the role of Sam Friedman, a lawyer who works alongside Marshall. This looks like it will be quite a powerful film. Here's the synopsis:

Marshall is based on a true incident in the life of Thurgood Marshall, when he was a young lawyer, long before his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the nation teeters on the brink of WWII, a nearly bankrupt NAACP sends Marshall to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur against his wealthy socialite employer in a sexual assault and attempted murder trial that quickly became tabloid fodder. In need of a high profile victory but muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall is partnered with Samuel Friedman, a young Jewish lawyer who has never tried a case. Marshall and Friedman struggle against a hostile storm of fear and prejudice, driven to discover the truth in the sensationalized trial which helped set the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement to come.

The movie has a very talented cast of actors that also includes Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Dan Stevens (The Guest), James Cromwell (Babe), Sterling K. Brown (The People vs. O.J. Simpson) and Keesha Sharp (The People v. O.J. Simpson).

Reginald Hudlin is directing the film and it's set to be released on October 13th.

From superhero on the streets to superhero in the courtroom, Chadwick Boseman stars in new trailer for Marshall

Author: Zehra Phelan

Chadwick Boseman may have only recently thrilled audiences in the debut trailer for The Black Panther but now we get to witness the star in the making in a completely different role in the new trailer for Marshall.

The story focuses on Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court justice in his early years as a young lawyer tasked with defending a black chauffeur in a highly publicised sexual assault case. Paired with young Jewish lawyer Friedman in a segregationist court, he’s forced to fight prejudice as he and Friedman work their case — which helped set the stage for the future Civil Rights Movement.

In a recent statement director, Reginald Hudlin wanted to state this was far from a biopic and hits all the right notes for a thriller “It’s a thriller, not a biopic, about an early case of one of the greatest lawyers in American history. In a time when we need heroes who fight for justice, Marshall is an inspirational movie that brings people together. And it’s a lot more fun than anyone expects.”

The project is directed by Oscar nominee Reginald Hudlin, the film stars Chadwick Boseman as the legendary attorney and Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. Josh Gad takes on the role as lawyer Sam Friedman. Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, James Cromwell, Sterling K. Brown and Keesha Sharp complete the cast.
