Abbas Kiarostami: 'The world is my workshop'

10 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Unable to film in his native Iran, Abbas Kiarostami now has to shoot his enigmatic films abroad. Does it matter that Cannes audiences found his new work exasperating?

It's hard to spot Abbas Kiarostami amid the gloom of the Cannes beachfront pavilion. There he is, behind the curtain, still as a millpond, his clothes dark and his glasses darker. "I am not a creature of the red carpet," he explains, lest there be any doubt of that. Today he could pass for a fugitive from justice or a supergrass on witness protection, set to dish the dirt from his base in the shadows.

Once, not so long ago, Kiarostami was the de facto leader of the Iranian new wave, the creator of soulful, enigmatic human stories rooted in his home soil. Now the movement is defunct and the 71-year-old director in effect stateless, flushed from his habitat by the Ahmadinejad »

Cannes: 'On the Road,' with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart, is a reverent, if not overly faithful ramble

23 May 2012 9:59 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

In On the Road, Walter Salles’ reverent, at times almost painfully faithful adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s birth-of-the-Beat-spirit novel, the characters are always getting high on one thing or another, and I don’t just mean drugs — though they do smoke weed and dissolve Benzedrine into their coffee. They also go to after-hours clubs and listen to twisty ecstatic jazz, their bodies shaking and writhing as the music works its way inside them. They have a lot of sex, too, some of it pretty exposed (hello, Nc-17!): On a car ride to nowhere, Sal (Sam Riley), the Kerouac character, »

[Cannes Review] Like Someone in Love

23 May 2012 8:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami made a major splash at the 2010 Cannes film festival with his first feature film shot outside of his home country of Iran, Certified Copy. This year, the renowned auteur returns with his second non-Iranian production, Like Someone in Love, shot completely in Japanese amidst the neon lights of Tokyo. But shooting in a foreign country doesn’t mean the director is straying from themes that have dominated his body of work since the early ’70s. What seems to anchor Kiarostami as one of the most revered filmmakers working today is his ability to reflect the natural unexpectedness of reality by forcing us to question the identity of his characters. These thematic through-lines continue to evolve in Like Someone in Love, an enigmatic examination of the different forms of affection that people can have for one another.

Kiarostami Baffles and Electrifies with his own Brand of Tokyo Story

Having morphed into a predictably unpredictable filmmaker so far in the 21st century, the extent to which Abbas Kiarostami’s new film Like Someone in Love defies categorization is startling, if not invigorating. Filming once again in an unfamiliar setting – this time Tokyo – the Iranian master has manufactured an avant-garde love story that feels entirely alien within his filmography, not to mention most of contemporary world cinema. Closest in essence to Certified Copy‘s yearning grasps at soured romance, this new mysterious object could perhaps be called a copy of that film – discrepancies, blips, surprises and all. With a lulling, intermittently blissful pace that evolves into a depraved beast over its running time, Kiarostami has shown that his second life in the spotlight will not be short-lived.

Abbas Kiarostami Finds Inspiration Far From Home

21 May 2012 10:04 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Cannes, France — Abbas Kiarostami has found inspiration far from home.

The Iranian director's films are routinely banned in his home country, whose Islamist government has arrested or barred several younger filmmakers from working.

The 72-year-old auteur has responded by looking abroad for inspiration. His last feature, "Certified Copy," was shot in Italy, and his new Cannes Film Festival entry "Like Someone in Love" was made in Tokyo, in Japanese and with a Japanese cast.

"In the past few years for fairly obvious reasons, perhaps, I had to work outside Iran," Kiarostami told reporters in Cannes on Monday, saying this presented him with a challenge. "How could I convey to you what I had in my imagination without resorting to geography?"

Kiarostami built a global reputation with simple stories told with passion and conviction in Iran-set films like "Life and Nothing More" and "Through the Olive Trees. He said now setting »

Cannes 2012: Sleep Deprived Stay with Kiarostami's 'Like Someone in Love'

Prior to lining up for Abbas Kiarostami's Like Someone in Love here in Cannes the sky opened up and the rain began to pour. As is the necessity, I dutifully got in line under the shared cover of a tiny umbrella. We stood outside for a good 30 minutes until finally taking our seats. Set to begin at 7:30 Pm, the film will play for an hour and 49 minutes. It's not going to start on time. I'm fading. The lights dim. The movie begins... We are introduced to Akiko (Rin Takanashi), a young prostitute who's lying to her boyfriend (Ryo Kase). We're in a darkened lounge where she's entertaining an older gentleman but prepared to head off to her next stop. Her grandmother is in town, but she's gone out of her way not to answer her phone calls or return her several messages, though we are given the opportunity »

Cannes Review: Abbas Kiarostami Drives In Circles In Dull 'Like Someone In Love'

21 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

After heading to Italy for his last effort "Certified Copy," famed Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami had a very simple reason for making Japan the next stop on his international production jaunt. "...if I make a film in Japan, I won't be accused of making a film for the West. Making a film in Japan is like making a film in Iran. Whether actors speak Japanese or Persian, there are still subtitles." Unless he makes "Men In Black 4," it's hard to fathom that Kiarostami would ever be thought of as submitting to the conventions of American filmmaking. And no matter what language its in, "Like Someone In Love" is pure Kiarostami, but whether or not it succeeds is up for debate.

Another riff on love, relationships and identity, "Like Someone In Love" for half the picture feels like a reheated "Certified Copy" before it truly spins a bit out of control. »

Cannes 2012: Like Someone in Love – review

Abbas Kiarostami's Tokyo-set drama is beautifully shot and acted, but the curtain comes crashing down too abruptly

Abbas Kiarostami can sometimes create challenging endings. The sign-off to his masterpiece A Taste of Cherry is still something to be pondered. But his latest movie, set in Tokyo, really is bafflingly and even exasperatingly truncated. There are some interesting ideas and sympathetic performances in a superbly shot and fascinatingly controlled exercise. There is potential. But the curtain comes down with an arbitrary crash just as the drama was becoming interesting.

The action revolves around a young student Akiko (Rin Takanashi) who is doing escort work in Tokyo, and becoming increasingly exhausted and disenchanted. When she is sent out on a job in the suburbs, her client turns out to be a gentle and grandfatherly academic, Takashi (Tadashi Okuno) who is amusingly shown distractedly taking a late-night telephone call from someone wanting »

Cannes trailer for Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone In Love"

10 May 2012 10:21 AM, PDT | Nippon Cinema | See recent Nippon Cinema news »

Way back in March, a 2-minute trailer for Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone In Love surfaced on YouTube, but was quickly taken down, re-upped, etc. in the typical game of Whac-a-Mole that happens with leaked trailers.

Now the Cannes Film Festival website has been updated with an official version of the trailer. The only difference between this trailer and the old watermarked one seems to a few additional seconds of Cannes logo at the beginning.

As for the film itself, it’s said to be a spiritual successor to Kiarostami’s previous work, “Certified Copy” (2010), and is set entirely in Japan.

Last February, it was widely-reported that Aoi Miyazaki was cast in the lead role. However, no contract had been signed at the time and the role ended up going to Rin Takanashi instead. Takanashi plays a young college student named Akiko who becomes involved in an unusual relationship with »

Cannes Check: Abbas Kiarostami's 'Like Someone in Love'

The director: Abbas Kiarostami (Iranian, 71 years old) The talent: Kiarostami may have chosen a major international star to headline his foray into non-Iranian cinema two years ago, but for his second, he's taking the opposite tack. Rin Takanishi, his 23 year-old lead actress, is a relative newcomer, schooled mostly in Japanese television; her older co-star, Tadashi Okuno, may have a screen CV that dates back to the 1960s, but it's even briefer than Takanishi's. The most recognizable name here is Ryo Kase, whom you may remember from "Letters from Iwo Jima" and that godawful kamikaze-ghost role in last year's "Restless." Kiarostami »

Cast of “Outrage Beyond” revealed, Otomo returns

17 April 2012 4:47 AM, PDT | Nippon Cinema | See recent Nippon Cinema news »

The upcoming sequel to Takeshi Kitano's 2010 gangster film Outrage has been a tough one to figure, and fair warning -- the reason for that involves some spoilers from the original.

On Tuesday, a press event was held at Seimei no Mori Resort in Chiba Prefecture to present the cast of the second film, now titled Outrage Beyond. New additions Toshiyuki Nishida, Yutaka Matsushige, Katsunori Takahashi, Kenta Kiritani, and Hirofumi Arai were in attendance along with returning cast members Kitano, Tomokazu Miura, Ryo Kase, and Fumiyo Kohinata.

There has been some question about how a sequel might work, simply because the first film was a complete blood bath. Most of the main characters were killed and it ended with Kitano's character, Otomo, getting stabbed and then later being confirmed dead by Kohinata's character, a crooked detective named Kataoka.

Producer Masayuki Mori confirmed that Otomo is in fact alive, but was »

Teaser for Abbas Kiarostami's "Like Someone In Love" surfaces on YouTube

28 March 2012 9:16 AM, PDT | Nippon Cinema | See recent Nippon Cinema news »

Someone has uploaded a teaser trailer for Abbas Kiarostami’s latest film, Like Someone In Love (formerly known as “The End”), to YouTube.

The film is said to be a spiritual successor to Kiarostami’s previous work, “Certified Copy” (2010), and is set entirely in Japan.

Takanashi plays a young college student named Akiko who becomes involved in an unusual relationship with a brilliant man in his 60s (Tadashi Okuno). Ryo Kase and Denden also appear.

Please bear in mind that the watermark on this trailer is a pretty blatant indication that it was not intended for wide public consumption, so watch it while you can. For obvious legal reasons, I probably won’t be able to replace »

New Images From Abbas Kiarostami's 'Like Someone In Love'

Today is a good day to be an Abbas Kiarostami fan. Early this morning, a gorgeous trailer dropped for this next flim "Like Someone In Love" -- click here in case you missed it -- and now, a few new images from the movie have arrived via Paris Match to give you a further look at the film that is a strong contender to hit Cannes.

Starring Rin Takanashi, Tadashi Akuno and Ryo Kase ("Letters From Iwo Jima," "Restless"), this latest effort from the Iranian filmmaker finds him traveling to Japan, to tell the story of a young woman who finances her studies through prostitution and her relationship with a brilliant, elderly academic who is also one of her clients. The film is said to be a continuation (at least thematically, we're guessing) of "Certified Copy," and it looks like yet another fascinating direction for the filmmaker.

Watch: Endearing Teaser Trailer For Abbas Kiarostami's Japanese Romantic Drama 'Like Someone In Love'

26 March 2012 1:38 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

After taking the festival scene by storm last year with his Euro-set "Certified Copy," Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami has now moved East with his latest effort, Japanese-language romantic drama "Like Someone In Love," formerly known as "The End."

We were actually unaware the film had already completed production (which evidently finished lensing last November) so it was with much surprise that we woke up to the first endearing teaser trailer for the film. Utilizing Ella Fitzgerald's rendition of title track, the films looks to be a worthy "continuation of 'Certified Copy'" centering on a young Japanese woman who finances her studies through prostitution and her relationship with a brilliant, elderly academic who is also one of her clients.

Despite early reports of Aoi Miyazaki starring, it looks like she's been replaced by Rin Takanashi who will now star along side Tadashi Akuno and Ryo Kase ("Letters From Iwo Jima, »
