Move Over 'The Avengers,' Clark Gregg Joins Jason Reitman’s 'Labor Day'

9 May 2012 7:57 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Long relegated to post-credit sequences and scene-stealing bit parts as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel movies, it was nice to see actor Clark Gregg gain a little more screen time in this past weekend’s superhero brouhaha “The Avengers.” Granted, the silver screen was still mostly dedicated to the sweaty, muscle-bound (sometimes green) dudes in spandex, but Gregg had more than his share of moments, and has been consistently good with small parts in films like “(500) Days of Summer” and “The Usual Suspects.” He’s a bit part character actor who deserves a movie all his own – in fact he’s been in a few diverting short films entitled “Marvel One-Shots” centered on Agent Coulson—but for now he’s looking to move into some promising adult fare.

THR is now reporting that he’s joining an 'Avengers'-like acting super team in the form of “Young Adult” helmer Jason Reitman’s “Labor Day, »

Clark Gregg Joins Jason Reitman’s ‘Labor Day’ With Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin

9 May 2012 7:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Now that The Avengers  is a certified phenomenon, it’s safe to assume that everyone involved has their pick of movie projects from here on out and Clark Gregg, Agent Coulson to you Marvel movie nerds, is jumping into bed with the director of Young Adult.

THR reports that Gregg has joined the cast of Labor Day, the next film from director Jason Reitman. The movie, which Reitman adapted from the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, is a road trip drama about a mother (Kate Winslet) and her young son (Gattlin Griffith) who end up in the company of an escaped convict named Frank (Josh Brolin) over Labor Day Weekend. Luckily for them, the convict is more of a “life lessons” sort of guy and over the three days he and the young boy bond instead of, you know, stabbing him and his mother to death or something. »

'Avengers' Star Clark Gregg Boards Jason Reitman's 'Labor Day'

9 May 2012 7:03 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Hulk might have stolen the show in "The Avengers," but it was Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson who captured our hearts. That's why it should come as no surprise that other filmmakers are quickly snapping up the actor for their own projects.

The Marvel star is headed over to celebrate "Labor Day" with Jason Reitman, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. There's no word yet on what character Gregg will be playing, but he is set to join an all-star cast.

So far "Labor Day" already stars Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Tom Lipinski, Maika Monroe, James Van Der Beek, Gattlin Griffith and Brighid Fleming. It is based on the novel by Joyce Maynard which is about an escaped convicted murderer who holes up with a lonely single mom and her young son over a Labor Day weekend. The story will be told from the perspective of the son, who »

Rebecca Hall (The Town) is in negotiations to join Iron Man 3 in a role previously described as "a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark" (does that pic to the right from "Bazaar" say sexy scientist to you?). Hall is taking the role Jessica Chastain declined recently due to what she described as a "jammed packed" schedule. [source] Cameron Diaz has reportedly signed on to fill the role previously eyed in Ridley Scott's The Counselor, joining previously cast Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem. The film is an original screenplay written by Cormac McCarthy in which Fassbender will play a present-day Southwest lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down. Diaz will play a character named Malkina described as a hyper-sexualized Argentinean woman who's hooked up with Bardem's character. Angelina Jolie was lobbying hard for the part, but »

We have casting news for two holidays, a mountain, and a last name---or at least four movies that are titled as such. Susan Sarandon and daughter Eva Amurri Martino will star in Mother's Day, a drama about the mother/daughter relationship. Clark Gregg will follow up The Avengers with a role in Jason Reitman's Labor Day Alexia Rasmussen signed on to star opposite Brian Geraghty in Kilimanjaro Revenge star Gabriel Mann will spend his summer hiatus filming the Cesar Chavez biopic Chavez Hit the jump for details on each project. Mother's Day According to THR, Paul Duddrige will write and direct Mother's Day, which follows twelve pairs of mothers and their daughters over the course of a Mother's Day.  It's definitely a workable premise, though 24 co-leads sounds like a big ensemble to juggle.  I'd like to see Duddridge try to round up eleven other Hollywood mother/daughter pairs.  Goldie Hawn »

Aronofsky Takes 'The General,' Reitman's 'Labor Day' Cast and Cameron Contemplates 'Battle Angel'

Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are the first two actors said to be returning to join Danny Trejo in Machete Kills. No big surprise on either account. [source] Darren Aronofsky will reportedly direct The General, a film that sounds like it's something of an Inglourious Basterds take (or perhaps more of an Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) on George Washington. The film is set up at Paramount with a script from Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, which is said to be more of an Unforgiven-like tale rather than a straight historical drama. Aronofsky is currently casting Noah for a July shoot and there's no telling on whether or not The General will serve as his follow-up. Dawson Leery is back, y’all! Word on the street is James Van Der Beek is in talks to join Jason Reitman’s next picture, “Labor Day,” along with Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.

This is the latest coup for Van Der Beek who has recently opened a whole new chapter for himself as an actor. He currently plays a narcissistic version of himself on the ABC comedy, “Don’t Trust The B---- In Apt 23.” In the last year, he’s »

James Van Der Beek Joins Brolin, Winslet In Jason Reitman’s ‘Labor Day’; Lead Children Cast

17 April 2012 6:03 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

While Jason Reitman was running the gauntlet for his awards darling — or, so we initially thought — Up in the Air, I was instantly excited by the prospect of Labor Day, which even he, at that point in time, figured would be his follow-up to the Oscar-nominated George Clooney-starrer. Obviously, that turned out not to be the case, as Diablo Cody‘s Young Adult script — loved by some, loathed by others, moderately respected by yours truly — landed in front of him and refused to let go.

He’s now finally back in the Labor Day saddle, though, with Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet set to headline. I confess that I couldn’t help but leaf through Joyce Maynard‘s source material back when the fabrics of this project were first hinted at, though seeing as how that was nearly three years ago, I’ve forgotten a good deal of the book — indeed, »

James Van Der Beek and Gattlin Griffith Join Jason Reitman’s Labor Day

17 April 2012 5:48 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Coming off of last year’s excellent (and sadly underseen) Young Adult, director Jason Reitman is gearing up to begin production on his next project, Labor Day, this summer.  Reitman scripted the adaptation of Joyce Manard’s novel himself, and Kate Winselt stars as a lonely mother whose 13-year-old son convinces her to take in a drifter (Josh Brolin) who turns out to be an escaped convict.  The three spend Labor Day Weekend together and, obviously, bond.  THR now reports that James Van Der Beek has joined the cast as a police officer investigating a missing person’s case ($10 says he shows up on Winslet’s doorstep at some point in the film). Additionally, a separate report from THR reveals that, following an extensive search, Reitman has settled on Gattlin Griffith (Changeling) to play Winslet’s son in the film.  The deal isn’t closed, but the actor has entered negotiations. »
