Black Sails, Ep. 1.07: “VII.” – not much calm before the storm

Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 7 – “VII.”

Written by Michael Angeli

Directed by Marc Munden

Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz

It’s amazing to see the differences between an exposition-heavy episode of Black Sails in its seventh episode and an exposition-heavy episode in its second or third. By now, most of the characters are fleshed out so that even if you might not be invested in them and their conflicts, their intentions are clear. The problem with the information dumps earlier in the season were mainly that the there wasn’t much in the way of action and thus the stakes were ambiguous. Now that we’ve seen plenty of people die along the way, the stakes couldn’t be more evident, making the drama surrounding Flint’s crazed mission both compelling and exciting.

That’s not to say that the exposition here is terribly interesting, as “VII.” functions much »

Black Sails, Ep. 1.03: “III.” continues to tread lightly

9 February 2014 7:57 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 3 – “III.”

Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine

Directed by Neil Marshall

Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz

When Black Sails premiered, I welcomed its slow pace and narrative interest. Going the less obvious route, the series has – so far – avoided laying the action on too thick and, instead, has stuck close to its main characters. However, these characters have mostly been conniving and stressing out, wanting to kill certain people but being unable to for whatever reasons (like due to John’s craftiness). At some point, tensions need to be relieved, and the fact that this is a series about pirates makes that very easy to accomplish – throw a sword between two characters and let them go for it. For all its similar kind of quietness in the face of a loud premise, The Walking Dead still manages to have a zombie-based action set-piece in almost every episode. »

Black Sails 1.3 – “III” Review

9 February 2014 11:12 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Starz

Black Sails continues an upward trend after a sleepy pilot two weeks ago, and “III” contains some of the most promising material we’ve seen from the pirate drama. Last week’s episode (read the review here) saw development in several of the major characters, especially Luke Arnold’s John Silver and Tom Hopper’s Billy Bones – those characters continue to gain momentum and personality in the third installment, while Toby Stephens’s Captain Flint still operates behind a veil of mystery. Spoilers follow for the third episode “III.”

After committing the entire schedule of the Urca d’Lima to memory, John Silver showed this week that he’s one of the more cunning scoundrels on an island full of, well, cunning scoundrels. By refusing to give up the ultimate destination of the treasure-laden galleon, Flint and his crew are forced to take Silver along on their quest, ensuring »

Black Sails, Ep. 1.02: “II.” navigates a sea of characters

Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 2 – “II.”

Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine

Directed by Sam Miller

Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz

Following last week’s premiere of Black Sails, it was clear that the toughest obstacle the series was going to face in its first season was making such a large group of characters interesting enough that we have stakes in the landlocked portions of episodes. “II.” largely begins to address some of those concerns, and while there is still a lot of work to be done with central figures like John Silver and Charles Vane, the rest of the group members are starting to become much more recognizable as characters and not just people who are on the screen.

“II.” begins by focusing on what is currently the love story in Black Sails – the relationship between Hannah New’s Eleanor Guthrie and Jessica Parker Kennedy’s Max. »

'Black Sails' review: All aboard for high-seas adventure

25 January 2014 9:00 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Starz is setting sail with a new drama when "Black Sails" launches Saturday (Jan. 25).

The swashbuckling adventure combines real-life pirates from the 18th century, like Charles Vane (Zach McGowan), Calico John Rackham (Toby Schmitz) and Anne Bonny (Clara Paget) and characters from Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island," like Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and John Silver (Luke Arnold), with new fictional characters like Nassau proprietor Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New) and her right-hand man and woman, Mr. Scott (Hakeem Kae-Kazim) and Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy).

At first glance, the high seas adventure might appear to be more along the lines of former Starz program "Spartacus," which often seemed like a pornographic movie with fighting and a large budget. Like its predecessor, "Black Sails" does not shy away from violence and sex.

But four episodes in, "Black Sails" is actually spinning a cleverly-crafted tale of intrigue, secrets and deceit surrounding a »

Watch 'Black Sails' episode I online: Luke Arnold calls it a once-in-a-lifetime project

18 January 2014 4:15 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Starz is bringing a new drama to life when "Black Sails" premieres next weekend. But if you don't want to wait that long, the channel has released the first episode early. The video above is the premiere episode in its entirety.

The swashbuckling show chronicles the adventures of pirates in the early 1700s, or what is referred to as the "golden age" of piracy. A prequel, of sorts, to the events of literary classic "Treasure Island," the show has real-life pirates like Charles Vane (Zach McGowan), John Rackham (Toby Schmitz) and Anne Bonny (Clara Paget) joining fictional characters like Eleanor Guthrie (Hannah New) and Long John Silver (Luke Arnold) in the Caribbean in a race for an enormous treasure, and it sounds as though the actors loved making first season as much as we've enjoyed watching it so far.

"This is the project you hope comes along your whole career, »
