Thn’s Top 5 Of 2012: Number 1

31 December 2012 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

12 months of movies, hundreds of releases, we’re left with two; the best and worst as voted by the staff of Thn. Our best film of 2012 is…

The Dark Knight Rises – dir. Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Arriving with the weight of the world on its shoulders, The Dark Knight Rises surpassed expectations with its grand scale, epic scope and menacing tone. Christopher Nolan’s trilogy-ender challenged audiences with its refusal to explain what, why or how – the latter causing much chagrin amongst our team. Magnificently performed, fearlessly produced and clever, The Dark Knight Rises concluded a perfect trilogy with style.

Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

Self-proclaimed Bat-geek Claire Huxham couldn’t hide her admiration for Christopher and »

Synopsis:

In 1989, emergency responders received a 911 call from Maria Rossi confessing to three brutal murders. The courts found her insane – but something else found her first.

Twenty years later, her daughter Isabella (Fernanda Andrade), followed by film-maker Michael (Ionut Grama) who wishes to document her journey, has found that her search for answers had led her to two rogue priests who reveal that her mother is in truth possessed not by one powerful demon but four! Now, it’s up to Isabella to face pure evil and work to overcome its claim on her mother’s soul once and for all.

Sometimes there’s nothing quite like a good, old fashioned Exorcism flick that features all the staples we’ve come to know and love and fear - Contorted bodies, speaking in tongues and the troubled protagonists that have to overcome all the odds.

UK Audience Reaction to Special Church Based Screening of The Devil Inside

21 March 2012 | Horror Asylum | See recent Horror Asylum news »

Following on from the surprising decision to screen William Brent Bell's new docu-exorcism horror flick 'The Devil Inside' in various churches around the world the UK decided to get in on the action and took the almost sacrilegous decision to preview the movie the night before its general release last Friday at the Round Chapel in Hackney, London. Bell co-penned the script for 'The Devil Inside' along with Matthew Peterman. Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan and Brian Johnson all star in the movie. The Devil Inside tops the UK box office, watch audience reaction at London premiere

19 March 2012 7:09 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Blending the possession elements of The Exorcist with the video-camera stylings of Paranormal Activity, new horror film The Devil Inside has topped the UK box office on its first weekend of release.

It belongs to the found footage genre in which a film is presented as an amateur recording of actual events, giving it an added sense of grittiness and authenticity. It's a documentary-style technique that may well make filmgoers ask if what they are seeing is real, thus offering an immediate suspension of disbelief.

So what better way to see how viewers responded than by pointing a video camera at the audience, too?

Following the earlier reaction footage, taken at a screening in America where the film was released at the start of January, comes a new video from the first UK screening last week. Like the Us showing, it was held in a church, which no doubt added to the creepy atmosphere. »

The Devil Inside

Stars: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley | Written by William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman | Directed by William Brent Bell

We’re doing something a little different for this review folks… If you’ve read any of my reviews of documentary-style or found-footage horror flicks you’ll know I have a particular disdain for the sub-genre. Couple that fact with the terrible reviews that came out the Us when the film opened over there and I knew I’d give The Devil Inside a bad review. So I thought in the interests of balance and fairness, why not see what joe public thinks of the film? After all, despite what critics say about these types of movies they still attract an audience. Hence we tracked down a found footage film fan who has a fondness for the Paranormal Activity movies (again another franchise I »

Running time: 83 minutes

Synopsis: A young woman travels to Italy to investigate what caused her mother to murder three members of her church. While there, she becomes wound up in a series of unauthorised exorcisms, with devastating results…

Never have I been to a film screening that has so immersed me in the experience as that of The Devil Inside. The film’s promoters put on quite a show for its release, inviting journalists and members of the public to a special screening of the supernatural horror at the Round Chapel in Hackney.

Complete with nuns, ghostly lighting and a somewhat ominous all-male choir singing in the upper balconies, the stage was set for a full-on horror experience. After a quick video interview on the way in, I surrendered my contact details and signed my permission to »

The Devil’s Demonic Handywork: Thn’s Top Five Possessions

16 March 2012 5:34 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Demonic possession has been the theme of many a horror film over the years. However it was really William Peter Blatty’s best-seling novel The Exorcist (inspired by the real-life exorcism case of Robbie Mannheim) that ensured the idea was ingrained into popular culture. A film was eventually adapted for the screen by a top-of-his-game William Friedkin, who was just coming off his Oscar-winning cat-and-mouse crime classic The French Connection. After The Exorcist went on to break box-office records with queues around the block and audience members reportedly fainting in aisles, the 1973 controversial shocker was ripped-off, parodied, and sequelized by imitators wanting to capitalise on this new form of terror.

So with the imminent release of the new found-footage horror hit The Devil Inside, Thn has decided to take at look at the best five films to feature the battle between good and evil for the souls of humanity`… as »

The Devil Inside Versus the Cameraman: A Movie Review

11 January 2012 4:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Director: William Brent Bell.

Writers: William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman.

Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman and Evan Helmuth.

Despite what the advertising claims, The Devil Inside looks more at the various causes of malevolent behavior than the attempts to treat the symptoms. When science says possession is a product of the mind, maybe all there is to cause a person to be possessed is a switch than a demonic spirit.

Although most of the cinematography is buried by the use of the shaky-cam format, there are small parts of this movie to like. With the film offering very close-up shots of the eye as part of the visual tale, the video editor is imbuing this film with symbolism. If the eye is truly the window to the soul, as some holy texts lead readers to believe, this film certainly has plenty of those framed shots. By examining how the eye reacts, »

Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan

For decades, The Lost Boys earned the top spot on my "movies that cheated the audiences at the end" list. By rewriting vampire lore in the last 8 minutes, the entire movie was ruined for me, no small feat given my proclivity to suspend disbelief (and yes, I revisited that film and the review is coming soon).

But the reigning champion was dethroned this weekend, as The Devil Inside delivered a brutal kick to the gut to moviegoers. It's unfortunate, as the film is pretty good, keeping the audience either deathly silent or screaming at all the right moments. But as the credits rolled, most of the audience at the screening I attended went from shrieking to jeering and booing at the screen.
