Inaugural Fox Director Fellows Gather at Studio Lot

The twenty female filmmakers who have been selected as the inaugural class of 21st Century Fox and Fox Audience Strategy’s director fellows program gathered on the lawn outside the studio’s commissary on Wednesday night to salute diversity and sip cocktails.

The program is being initiated to encourage a greater variety of voices behind the camera, but as Fox Television Group COO Joe Earley stressed in his introductory remarks, the program isn’t altruistic. Given how the makeup of today’s film and television, it makes commercial sense to have more women involved in the entertainment industry, he argued.

The fellows are a mixture of established talent and rising stars — a group that includes “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Emmy nominee Jennifer Arnold (“A Small Act”), “A Teacher” director Hannah Fidell, Oscar nominee Steph Green and Oscar nominee Jessica Sanders. They hail from the United States, as well as Mexico,

10 Years of Saw: Heather’s Favorite Traps

  • DailyDead
This Halloween, Lionsgate is bringing Jigsaw and all his deadly contraptions back to the big screen for a one-week limited re-release of James Wan’s indie horror triumph, Saw. To honor the occasion, I thought it would be fun to take a look back and celebrate some of my favorite traps and set-ups featured throughout the series.

Saw: The Reverse Bear Trap

We’ll just go ahead and start with the most iconic trap of the entire Saw franchise- the reverse bear trap that Shawnee Smith found herself locked inside of during Wan’s original film. Visually, the contraption is a horrific marvel of complicated steel and death, demonstrating just how visceral Jigsaw’s object lessons could be. And when you couple that with image of Smith waking up inside the reverse bear trap- and how she masterfully sells that moment with just the use of her eyes- it

Film Review: ’36 Saints’

Film Review: ’36 Saints’
Pray for those horror fans who stumble upon “36 Saints,” for they are truly in an hour of need. A maladroit mash-up of gritty New York police procedural, religious-themed slasher and low-budget filmmaking satire, this confused and confusing pic delivers no thrills, chills or anything remotely surprising. Prompt banishment to movie purgatory is assured, though viewers may condemn it straight to somewhere even worse.

A gravely serious introductory voiceover lays out the convoluted plot: Every generation is protected from evil by 36 individuals who “carry the suffering of the world.” If they’re wiped out, it’s apocalypse now. An unfortunate plane crash has whittled the current number to nine, and they inexplicably all reside in Washington Heights. Two New York City cops (Franky G, Jeffrey De Serrano) are warned that an age-old demon is on a killing spree, but their lackluster detective work does little to stem director Eddy Duran’s

Murray Abraham as Gregor Screenwriters: J.H. Wyman RottenTomatoes: 39% MetaCritic: 42/100 Snippet from My Review: (read my full review here) Dead Man Down feels like something Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional) would have directed back in the mid-'90s, though the look is more modernized with a polished sheen and a penchant for slow-mo explosions and blue filters, which cinematographer Paul Cameron (Man on a Ledge, Total Recall) seems to excel in as of late. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) does manage to cut the expository moments to a minimum, allowing the film to rise above what could have

Explosive Vengeance-Filled Trailer For Farrell & Rapace’s ‘Dead Man Down’!

He may have appeared in one of the summers most disappointing blockbusters – the dire Total Recall remake – but Colin Farrell left 2012 with the terrific ensemble Seven Psychopaths, to remind us the year hasn’t been all bad for the Irish actor. Next up for the Dubliner will be Dead Man Down, a revenge-driven thriller that reunites the original The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev, with his stunning lead Noomi Rapace.

The film sees Farrell as Victor, the right hand man to a New York crime lord who is secretly planning retribution against his boss (Terrence Howard) for the death of his wife and daughter. However, a mysterious victim and neighbour (Rapace) has a blackmail plot of her own as she seeks revenge against Victor’s gangster boss.

Here we have the impressive first ‘noir’-ish trailer for the film co-starring Dominic Cooper, Isabelle Huppert, Armand Assante,
