Women Direct Lifetime's 5 Most Popular TV Movies After Network Bets on Female Helmers

Women Direct Lifetime's 5 Most Popular TV Movies After Network Bets on Female Helmers
Six months ago, Lifetime launched Broad Focus, a major initiative to have more women writing, directing, developing and producing content for the network.  It's too soon to say what kind of impact the initiative is having, but the ratings successes of TV movies by female directors certainly suggests it's a step in the right direction, both creatively and financially. Lifetime's five most popular original movies in 2015 have all been directed by women: Alex Kalymnios's "Cleveland Abduction," Angela Bassett's "Whitney," Rachel Goldenberg's "A Deadly Adoption," Vanessa Parise's "Perfect High" and Nzingha Stewart's "With This Ring." Even better, these five movies are the top five original movies in ad-supported cable among women 25-49. A sixth Lifetime movie, Nancy Savoca's "If There Be Thorns," made the top 10 in that prized demographic as well.  "Whitney," the result of Bassett's first time...

The Simpsons'” Dan Castellaneta and “Hot in Cleveland’s” Adam Korson appear in both films, as mega-producer Aaron Spelling and series creator Darren Star, respectively.

Lifetime Is Doing an Unauthorized Beverly Hills, 90210 Tell-All Movie
Lifetime has green-lit an unauthorized 90210 tell-all film, The Hollywood Reporter writes. The movie will be in the same vein as the network's 2014 Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story and forthcoming Full House project. Jeff Roda (Love Liza) is writing for helmer Vanessa Parise (PopFan), and will pen a script that promises to reveal the stress behind the series' up-and-down first four seasons, the reason it became a pop-culture powerhouse, and the drama that shook the show's personnel. (Yep, get ready for some juice from the real Peach Pit, because nothing is sacred.) The news comes a few months before 90210's 25th anniversary; the TV-movie's air date has not been confirmed, though.

Inaugural Fox Director Fellows Gather at Studio Lot

The twenty female filmmakers who have been selected as the inaugural class of 21st Century Fox and Fox Audience Strategy’s director fellows program gathered on the lawn outside the studio’s commissary on Wednesday night to salute diversity and sip cocktails.

The program is being initiated to encourage a greater variety of voices behind the camera, but as Fox Television Group COO Joe Earley stressed in his introductory remarks, the program isn’t altruistic. Given how the makeup of today’s film and television, it makes commercial sense to have more women involved in the entertainment industry, he argued.

The fellows are a mixture of established talent and rising stars — a group that includes “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Emmy nominee Jennifer Arnold (“A Small Act”), “A Teacher” director Hannah Fidell, Oscar nominee Steph Green and Oscar nominee Jessica Sanders. They hail from the United States, as well as Mexico,

‘#PopFan’ Director Vanessa Parise Finds Her Niche in Telepics

In a sign of the times for helmers, Parise (pictured) in recent years has segued to telepics, where she’s found opportunities to direct projects for Lifetime and Hallmark Channel. Her latest Lifetime entry, the thriller “#PopFan,” bows on Aug. 23, toplined by Chelsea Kane, star of ABC Family’s “Baby Daddy.”

Charles Shyer to Direct Chick Buddy Flick 'Bff'

Charles Shyer to Direct Chick Buddy Flick 'Bff'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Baby Boom and Alfie (2004) director Charles Shyer has signed on to direct a chick flick. Shyer will be behind the lens for the tale of two best friends (Bff, for the acronym-challenged, means best friends forever in girlspeak) who have reunited as adults, only to find one is a country mouse and one is a well-heeled city gal. The script was originally written by Vanessa Parise and Robin Dunne and is now being rewritten by Ellen Greenberg and Hallie Shyer, who is currently co-writing the screenplay for Eloise in Paris along with Charles Shyer, who will also direct. It's hard not to wonder why Greenberg and Shyer are rewriting an original script -- too many cooks in the kitchen, etc. -- but let's give them the benefit of the doubt.

As we all know, reuniting with old friends usually brings a host of problems with it -- especially old rivalries.

After being nominated for the Palme d'Or an incredible five times at Cannes, it's no wonder that director Hou Hsiao-hsien has become a Francophile. In his first film outside of Asia, the "Three Times" auteur directs the country's first lady of cinema, Juliette Binoche, in a story about an overburdened mother who receives a much-needed lift from her son's Chinese nanny (Song Fang) as they turn the City of Lights into a magical playground for the 7-year-old Simon . a tribute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short. In French with subtitles.
