Ali Larter says Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be the last in the series

Filming for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter begins in South Africa next month, and Ali Larter (who was announced to return last month) has confirmed that this will, indeed, be the final chapter of the long-running franchise.

“We are not allowed to say one thing,” she told IGN. “I am held to secrecy, but what I can tell you is that the script is amazing. They’re really wrapping up the whole series, so that just makes it a little more poignant. To be able to come back and reprise my role as Claire and my relationship with Alice, with Umbrella Corp. — you know, I’m excited to get back in it. I think the fans are just going to be beyond excited.”

Sony Pictures solidified its slate for 2016 and 2017 by announcing 16 release dates for upcoming films, which include two highly-anticipated genre sequels, Underworld 5 and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Underworld 5 will hit theaters on October 21, 2016, going up against Universal Pictures' Ouija 2 and Warner Bros.' Geostorm. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is slated for release on January 27, 2016, a date which is otherwise unoccupied.

Back in May, we reported that Kate Beckinsale is returning to reprise her role as the vampire Selene in Underworld 5. She will star alongside Theo James, who is reprising his role David from 2012's Underworld Awakening. Anna Foerster, who served as second unit director on Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, will make her feature directorial debut, working from a script by Cory Goodman. The story reportedly focuses on younger vampires and werewolves who are entrenched in a violent war between both species. Shooting is set »

'Resident Evil 6': Ali Larter Returns as Claire Redfield

3 August 2015 6:38 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With production scheduled to begin next month in South Africa, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter has brought in Ali Larter to portray Claire Redfield. This final installment of the Resident Evil franchise will be Ali Larter's third time portraying Claire Redfield, following 2007's Resident Evil: Extinction and 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife. Milla Jovovich is coming back as Alice, but no other cast members have been officially confirmed at this point.

Production on this sequel has been delayed a few times, following the 2012 release of Resident Evil: Retribution. Filming was supposed to begin on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in the fall of 2013, but that never came to pass. Last year, Milla Jovovich announced on her Facebook page that shooting was being pushed by one year, due to the actress' pregnancy. Production is still slated to take place in Cape Town, South Africa, which is where pre-production was taking place when the delay was announced. »

'Resident Evil 6' Begins Shooting in August

21 January 2015 9:53 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in August, Resident Evil franchise star Milla Jovovich revealed that production had been delayed on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, because she and her husband/director Paul W.S. Anderson are expecting their second child. She said then that shooting wouldn't happen until the summer of 2015. Now, the actress confirms in a new Facebook post that shooting will begin this August. Here's what she had to say in her post from Tuesday.

"I'm really proud of myself for not gaining the same amount of weight that I did with our first child (75 lbs.) because I have to be ready to start filming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in August of this year and I will also be nursing an infant simultaneously (get ready wardrobe department for Alice's new 'easy mama access' costume;)) so I don't want to be on any extreme diets to get ready to go back to "action hero" mode! »
