Continuing to see the members of the Soul Society take on the last of the Espada (most powerful of the Arrancar), this latest instalment of Bleach will certainly appeal to lovers of the fight sequences. There’s so much battling here that it makes it very easy to lose focus as to what the point behind it all is. Most of the battles continue over from the last collection of episodes, although this time more combatants are thrown into the mix. The powers of the Espada add quite a lot of variety to the fight sequences, with those lending themselves to the visual style coming off best.

It may seem as though these fights have been going on forever, but at least we’re getting something a little new here in the shape of Espada back story. »

Bleach finally returns to its main story arc after a detour. It picks up from where the show left off over a season ago, with many of the Soul Reapers in furious battle with the Espada, and if those terms mean nothing to you then it’s too late to join in now. This entire first set of episodes from Season 13, which is pretty much just more of Season 11, is a collection of fight sequences, each one outdoing the last.

The idea of plot is left far behind, but that’s not to discredit the show. Although it was certainly becoming stale, and had so many characters that many missed the mark, here we return to a bunch of superpowered villains and our heroes who will try and take them down. A season »

Bleach Season 12 Part 3: Zanpakuto: An Alternate Tale DVD Review

The third and final part of the saga that rudely interprupted the show’s main plot. That’s the thing with anime, the word ‘hiatus’ isn’t a common one, so when the show caught up with the manga, it was time to make stuff up. The collection even puts heavy comical emphasis on such a break by using the “next week” segments to have characters question where the scripts are and when things can get back to normal. Ironically though, this story of the spirits of the swords rebelling and joining the physical world has been far more engrossing and focused. Bleach has suffered from becoming overly complicated, while not furthering the characters.

This storyline, as filler as it may be, has actually captured  a lot of what was great about the show when it first started. »
