The Wheel Of Time: TV series pressing ahead

Joseph Baxter Apr 21, 2017

The Wheel Of Time, the sprawling fantasy novel series by Robert Jordan, will be adapted by Sony as a television series....

One of the most popular fantasy franchises of the literary world, The Wheel Of Time, has taken a crucial step towards a live-action adaptation.

Originally authored by Robert Jordan, the 80 million-selling 1990-2013 book series depicts a sprawling mythology, amalgamating feudal and magical tropes with elements of Eastern mysticism. Now, Sony will be the benefactor of a television adaptation series.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures Television is moving forward with a serial adaptation of the The Wheel Of Time, producing the project along with Red Eagle Entertainment and Radar Pictures.

Of course, this should be a large scale endeavor, since the novels of Robert Jordan (nom de plume of James O. Rigney Jr.), three of which were completed by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s 2007 death, build an

The Wheel of Time heading to the small screen

It looks like Robert Jordan’s high fantasy book series The Wheel of Time could be heading to the small screen, with Jordan’s widow and Wheel of Time editor Harriet McDougal posting the news on her Google+ account.

“Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time,” states McDougal. “Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio.”

The film and TV rights to Wheel of Time were snapped up in 2008 by Red Eagle Entertainment, with the production company paying to air a pilot entitled Winter Dragon on Fxx in February of last year, which starred Max Ryan and Billy Zane. This was seen as a last-gasp attempt to keep hold of the rights, and led to the legal issues mentioned in McDougal’s post.

‘Deadly Target’ DVD Review

Stars: Michael Jai White, Steve Austin, Max Ryan, Jon Osbeck, Allen Yates, Ashleigh Barnett, Matthew Bentley, Bobby Burns, Joe Fidler, John W. Lawson | Written by Kevin Carraway, Lawrence Sara | Directed by Kevin Carraway

Dear god, can’t someone give Michael Jai White a break? The star of the underrated Spawn, the fantastic blaxploitation spoof Black Dynamite, and the man behind supervillain Bronze Tiger in season 2 of Arrow, has been toiling away in Dtv action movie purgatory for some time now. For every decent action movie he makes – like Never Back Down 2 and Undisputed 2; he also has to appear in ill-judged films like Falcon Rising and this, Deadly Target.

Originally titled Chain of Command (no doubt renamed to stop any confusion with the hundred or so other movies with that moniker), Deadly Target sees White star as Special Operative James Webster who returns home after a tour of duty, only to

Chuck Russell directing new Hunchback of Notre Dame movie

Chuck Russell directing new Hunchback of Notre Dame movie
Chuck Russell is working on a new movie version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and it appears he's already chosen his Quasimodo.

Max Ryan is set to play the deformed bellringer after co-writing the screenplay for The Hunchback with Julio Ponce Palmieri (via THR).

A look at the IMDb page for the film indicates the hunchback has been renamed Pierre and Steven Berkoff is also linked to the production.

Filming is set to start on the movie in Serbia next year, with Russell producing alongside Mike Weber as executive producer and Eustace Montgomery Hicks as co-producer.

This would be the latest in a long line of adaptions of Victor Hugo's 1831 novel Notre Dame de Paris.

There's the singalong 1997 Disney version, the well known 1939 Charles Loughton adaptation and even a little known 90s TV movie starring Salma Hayek and Mandy Patinkin.

No release date has yet been set for The Hunchback.

Chuck Russell Directing New Hunchback Of Notre Dame

Last time we heard anything about a potential Hunchback Of Notre Dame movie, it was being developed by Tim Burton and Josh Brolin. That one never happened, but now a new version is underway. Chuck Russell is directing The Hunchback, with Max Ryan set to play the unfortunate Quasimodo. Ryan has also written the screenplay, in cahoots with Julio Ponce Palmieri. The film is based, of course, on Victor Hugo's classic novel Notre Dame De Paris: a story that's been much filmed before. There's a 1905 silent version; the famous Charles Laughton 1939 version; a decent '80s TV version with Anthony Hopkins; the 1997 Disney cartoon; and another '90s TV version with Salma Hayek and Mandy Patinkin. At base, the tragic tale revolves around the deformed Paris bellringer Quasimodo and his doomed love quadrangle with the beautiful gypsy girl Esmerelda, the crazed archdeacon Frollo and the dashing military captain Phoebus. Its dark themes take in repression,

‘Tokarev’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Nicolas Cage, Rachel Nichols, Max Ryan, Michael McGrady, Peter Stormare, Danny Glover | Written by Jim Agnew, Sean Keller | Directed by Paco Cabezas

It doesn’t bode well for a film when it counts Jim Agnew and Sean Keller as its writers. After all the duo were responsible for penning Giallo, the film that made Dario Argento the laughing stock of Frightfest and sounded the death knell on the career of the once-master of the Italian horror genre. Then again it doesn’t bode well when a film starring Nicolas Cage makes its debut as a direct to DVD title either.

So what’s the spiel? Well:

After a life of crime in his younger years Paul Maguire (Cage), now lives a charmed life. Fully reformed from his old ways, he is now a successful businessman, with a nice house, a lovely wife (Nichols) and a wonderful daughter, who he dotes on.

Crooked property developer Paul Maguire (Nicolas Cage) thinks he's put his dubious past behind him... until his daughter Caitlin (Aubrey Peeples) is apparently kidnapped. There's worse to follow so, rounding up his old buddies Kane (Max Ryan) and Doherty (Michael McGrady), Paul sets off on a Taken-style path of vengeance when he links the crime to a sour deal gone wrong with the Russian mafia years before.

Film Review: ‘Rage’

Film Review: ‘Rage’
When an ex-mobster’s daughter is found dead, the repressed return with a vengeance that feels more like a whimper in “Rage,” a silly and shopworn Nicolas Cage action vehicle that plays like a poor man’s “Taken,” “Mystic River” and “A History of Violence” rolled into one. Proficiently made but fatally unpersuasive in its portrayal of internecine gang warfare, this thuggish melodrama piles on the foreign accents and paint-by-numbers brutality, all served up with a grim, operatic self-seriousness that gives Cage’s antihero little room to maneuver. Spanish genre helmer Paco Cabezas’ English-language debut will find a few fans on VOD, where it’s rolling out simultaneously with its limited theatrical release.

Commercially and, er, culturally speaking, “Rage” is unlikely to do for Cage what the “Taken” movies have done for Liam Neeson; as scripted by James Agnew and Sean Keller (who previously collaborated on Dario Argento’s ill-fated
