Newswire: Morgan Spurlock’s next documentary will be all about brains

20 April 2017 3:35 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Morgan Spurlock is the visionary filmmaker who discovered that eating nothing but McDonald’s is bad for you, but his next project is going to be a lot less suicidal. According to Deadline, he’s directing a film currently called Untitled Human Intelligence Project, and it will be about how “innovations in brain technology” are making “sci-fi concepts” into real things. He’ll spend a year with “pioneers” who are studying the human brain, and he’ll track developments in neuroscience that could allow “the reading and writing of neural code.” Spurlock will also look at ethical debates surrounding brain technologies, with experts discussing the implications of using crazy science tricks to cure Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, restore motor functions to paralyzed patients, and allow people to instantly learn foreign languages or telepathically communicate with each other.

In theory, making this movie won’t require Spurlock to put his »

Documentary Sales Are Surging, But What’s Driving the Competition?

18 April 2017 7:57 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

You could call it the “Netflix effect.” With the rise of the global VOD giant and its increasingly voracious appetite for nonfiction films, the documentary industry is anticipating a busy spring season at the Tribeca Film Festival and Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival and marketplace.

But it’s not just Netflix, say industry insiders. The number of active buyers for documentary films suggests there’s an enthusiasm for independent nonfiction cinema that goes beyond the VOD giant.

On the eve of Tribeca, three high-profile documentaries have already found buyers: National Geographic acquired the coal-mining expose “From the Ashes,” and Gravitas Ventures bought theatrical and streaming rights to two films already partnering with CNN Films: “Elian,” the story of Cuban child émigré Elian Gonzalez, and Impact Partners’ “The Reagan Show,” a freshly relevant archival-driven doc about the staging of the former President.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Legend of Conan is dead

7 April 2017 5:04 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Author: Scott Davis

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been in the news quite a lot in the last week as he continues his promotional push for his new movies Aftermath, which is cinemas today (read our review here). And while the big Austrian is talking primarily about his new drama, some of the questions turned to both his upcoming projects and their long-gestating sequels.

With news that Schwarzenegger would bail on The Expendables franchise if Sylvester Stallone does indeed officially exit, similar sad news has come to light from screenwriter Chris Morgan (The Fate of the Furious) who has said that The Legend of Conan, the sequel that would have seen Arnold return to the title role he made famous in the early 1980’s, is dead.

Chatting with EW, the writer said that the film, which would have seen an Unforgiven-styled sequel with an old Conan, is over:

Morgan Spurlock Presents Bodyslam: Revenge of the Banana! follows a unique group of social outcasts who partake in the world of amateur wrestling via Ssp Wrestling (Seattle Semi-Pro Wrestling). Led by Josh Black a.k.a. “Ronald McFondle,” and Bill Bates a.k.a. “Eddie Van Glam,” by day the wrestlers are chefs, hairdressers, and delivery men, but by night these “cabaret combatants” put on raunchy matches while rabid fans chant obscenities and hurl beer cans at their heads…

It’s all fun and games until new recruit Paul a.k.a. “The Banana” joins up and plays the role of villain far too well. Banished from the group, he swears »

Colony Season 2 Episode 13 Review: Ronin

6 April 2017 8:14 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Colony has always had as part of its DNA a nod to Nazi occupation and the internment of the Jewish people.

Colony Season 2 Episode 13 wiped out an entire Bloc and rid Earth of the Aliens' version of troublesome Semites, being sure to get as much use out of them as possible.

Experiencing Maddie come to the realization she wasn't going to San Fernando was this drama at its finest, but there was so much more to the hour setting up nicely what's to come on Colony Season 3.

The Bowmans, as a family, only made it out alive because of Will's decision to trust Snyder with their possession of the gauntlet.

Snyder and the Bowmans are interconnected in ways they'll probably never fully understand, but the one who will likely pay the ultimate price for underestimating that connection will be Snyder.

Once again, Snyder was in the dark about what was happening. »

The Legend of Conan is no longer moving forward, says producer Chris Morgan

If you were looking forward to seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising the role of Conan the Barbarian, then I’m afraid we have some bad news for you as producer Chris Morgan has revealed that the long-gestating sequel The Legend of Conan is no longer moving forward, although the character may get another lease of life on the small screen.

“At the end of the day, the studio decided that they weren’t gonna make that,” Morgan tells EW. “I gotta say, it’s honestly a heartbreak. I love that first movie so much, so much, it’s one of my favorite movies. We had Will Beall do a draft on [the Legend of Conan script]. He killed it. Our take was Conan, 30 years later, a story like the Clint Eastwood Unforgiven. It was so awesome. Ultimately, the budget was big, the studio was not really sure of the title, and the relevance in the marketplace. »

Spice World: The Movie at 20

Simon Brew Apr 6, 2017

It's 20 years since the Spice Girls headed to the big screen for their solo movie. And we've taken a look back...

I don’t think Spice World: The Movie is as good as Inception.

This winter marks the 20th birthday of a film that many had sneered at before its release, and many continue to sneer at now. Boasting a hard-won 3.4/10 score on IMDb, Spice World: The Movie pops up from time to time in lists slamming films involving pop stars, or, if it’s lucky, it appears on the ‘guilty pleasure’ carousel. For added fun, the late Roger Ebert had it as one of the films that he most hated. Yikes.

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, personally, and have written about that before. Nor do I agree with Roger. For I do enjoy Spice World: The Movie for what it is: a daft, breezy, »

Colony Season 2 Episode 12 Review: Seppuku

30 March 2017 8:00 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Why, Hosts, why??

The Hosts were not pleased with events as they occurred on Colony Season 2 Episode 12 because the ending came as a great shock. They were obviously not witnessing the same great stuff I was.

Don't those Hosts know how to have a good time? Geez, why don't they think of the Los Angeles Bloc as an ant farm? If nothing else, the people within it must be entertaining them.

This was such an eventful hour and that it all led up to the Hosts scheduling the Los Angeles Bloc for destruction tells me a few things.

When you don't know if the show you're writing is going to be renewed, you go for broke and make it as thrilling as possible.

The finale is going to shake things up even further, and I'd expect much of what we know to be up in the air – most especially the fate of our protagonists. »

As much as we’d love to have superheroes here in the real world to help us through the darkest of times, we have to accept that it’s unfortunately not going to happen. Still, that doesn’t mean these characters can’t inspire, effectively bringing out the best in us when our fellow man needs us most. Thankfully, this notion isn’t lost on the talented people who currently bring these icons to life, thus bringing about Love is Love.

Those who are reading this, especially those living in the United States, no doubt remember the Pulse nightclub massacre that took place in Orlando, Florida, which had to be one of 2016’s most publicized tragedies.
